The last and most important part of physical house security is planning. Keep your security bars and door blocks handy and have a fall back plan. I like older houses with contains stairways. They are easy to secure from above as a fallback position in the event the first floor is breached.
New homes with thier open and airy floorplans may look nice, but they make it very hard to button up the second floor as a fall back position.
All your supplies should be stored on the second floor as well, this way if you have to fall back, you won’t lose your stash.
