Okay, so we’ve talked about sand filters. But I missed a critical purification method.
Its very simple, and you can carry it with you anywhere. The one downside is that it takes a good amount of time to get any quantity of drinking water, but since it can be built out of almost nothing, its a valuable bit of fieldcraft to know.
The only thing you will need is a piece of plastic like a square cut out of a bag, a poncho, or a piece of cellophane wrap.
The video shows you how to use the condensation method to clean dirty water.
Step 1…Put the soiled water in a bucket or large bowel
Step 2…Put another small container in the middle of the larger container. (you can cut a plastic bottle’s top off and weigh it down with some clean stones to make an easy clean water catch)
Step 3…Drape your plastic compeltely over the lid of your large container, leaving room to let it sag in the middle. The best draping will let the plastic drop to just above the mouth of the clean water catch.
Step 4…Put a small stone or anything with a little weight in the middle of your plastic drape, being careful to make sure the apex is over your clean water catch.
Step 5….Place the whole thing in the sun. The dirty water will evaporate into clean vapor and condensate on the plastic. When enough condensate is on the plastic it will run down into the cup. This is your clean water to drink.
Warning – This is great for muddy, dirty water, but not for water that has any chemicals in it. Oil and other chemicals can evaporate with water and cause contamination of your “clean” water supply.
