The Walking Dead (Season 5, Episode 3)

Episode 3, Four Walls and a Roof

Summary:

Four Walls and a Roof kicks off with Team Terminus in some type of building which is surrounded by walkers. They have Bob (who is not looking good) and they are trying to convince Bob that they have a legit reason for being cannibals.2014_TWD_S5_E3_Bob

As they torturing Bob with their chatter Bob starts to laugh and he shows them all that he was bit. They may have him but he is pretty sure that he’s killed them in return.

Back at the camp Sasha is outside looking for bob when she is attacked by a few walkers. Tyreese & Rick come out go out and keep Sasha from going out into the dark to look for Bob. And Team Rick is now split up again. Carol & Daryl went off after the car that took Beth and Bob is in the hands of Team Terminus.

Inside the prison everyone has turned on Gabriel, not sure if he is involved in the current disappearances. With Rick threatening him we get Gabriel’s back story. When it just started he locked out the living and the people he locked out of the church were torn to pieces by the walkers. Surviving is sometimes hard.2014_TWD_FatherGabriel

When Gabriel is done telling his tale Team Rick hears something outside and when they look they see that Bob has been dropped off – but he is unconscious and I’m not sure if they are going to realize he was bitten – which means he might be a Bob Zombie Bomb at this point. But when we come back from commercial Bob is awake and he is telling Team Rick what Gareth and the rest of Team Terminus did to him.

Rick wants to wait for Carol & Daryl as well as go take some vengeance on Team Terminus but Sgt. Abraham Ford wants to leave for DC and take Eugene with him. Sgt. Ford wants to take the bus and leave which almost comes to blows but Glenn cuts a deal. Glenn & Maggie will go with Team Eugene if Sgt. Ford will stay and help with whatever is going to go down with Team Terminus.

Rick wants to attack and make Team Terminus pay for what they did. A short while later we see Team Terminus break into the church. We see Carl and Gabriel inside, but it is dark and its not really clear what all is going down. Gareth starts listing out all the people who are in the church, and he knows that Rick & the others left – but not why. Which makes me wonder how the dude doesn’t suspect an ambush?

The attack out of the dark was beautiful. I loved the silenced weapons ambush and the following slaughter. I so didn’t want Rick to just let them go like old Rick would have done. It is a brutal world, and Team Rick/Eugene did what they had to do. Even if it horrified some of the others.

The next morning everyone takes their turn saying farewell to Bob – who is very philosophical in his dying moments. He sees Judith, and hope. Then Team Rick somehow leaves Sasha in the room alone with Bob just as he dies and turns. Come on, why the hell would you leave her in there alone at that point? I really thought Bob was going to attack.

The episode ends with Sgt. Ford leaving with Eugene and taking Glenn & Maggie with him on the bus. They give Rick their route as best they know and then drive off.

Or it almost ends there. In the last minute Michonne and Gabriel have a heart warming moment on the front steps of the porch which is interrupted by something in the woods. When Michonne goes to investigate she finds Daryl coming out of the woods – but we don’t know who is with or where Carol is!

Things I loved about this episode…

  • Bob yelling – “Tainted meat.”
  • Team Rick taking down team Terminus with some silenced weapons in the dark.

Things that I didn’t like about this episode…

  • Glenn offering to go with Sgt. Ford in exchange for him staying to help Rick with whatever is going to go down with Team Terminus.
  • Would Rick really leave his daughter inside the church no knowing if an accidental shot could hit her?
  • Tyreese looking horrified that Rick and the others butchered Team Terminus. What the hell did he want to do, let the cannibals go?
  • Team Rick seems way to casual about having a Zombie Bob Bomb lying in bed. Someone should have been sitting there with a pistol towards his head on guard duty the whole time.
  • Come on Glenn, why would you take Maggie and go with Sgt. Ford? Rick is a better leader by a factor of ten.

Duck Nuggets

So we made some Duck Nuggets from yesterdays hunting trip. I left these in the oil just a bit too long but they were still very tasty. Just a bit of egg wash and some bread crumbs and into a frying pan with oil they went. Keep them turning and watch them closely, they cook fast.

Step 1: Pluck it and bone it.

Step 2: Fry it up and keep it moving. (listen to that sizzle)

Step 3: Let the oil drain on a plate and a paper towel, and then enjoy.
2014_Duck_NuggetsThe one bird made roughly one plate of nuggets but my son ate them as I made them so this plate was all I got to eat.

Still Kick Ass People Out There

These guys deserve a huge slap on the back. So many people will tell you what you should do to help others but not actually do it themselves – or they cloak their gifts in other demands. Want education? Then you can’t have reproductive health services.

These guys are just out there helping the homeless. Without strings – because it is the right thing to do.

They built a fan in Australia and modified it with a washer and drier so the homeless could so some laundry.

Benelli M2 Takedown & Cleaning

I love this shotgun. It is so simple to breakdown and clean and comes apart in seconds. The bolt breaks down a little further and I’ll go over that in the future, but the honest truth is that you don’t have to do that full break down except for maybe one time per year. (Based on my longer experience with the same mechanism on the Franchi.)

2014_Benelli_TakeDownClean the barrel like you would any other and make sure you check the choke to make sure it is still tight. The final thing that I’d point out is that you want to clean the two little slots on the face of the barrel just where it sits into the receiver.

Duck Hunting – First Outing Of 2014 Season

Today started at 3:30am when my alarm went off and I rolled out of bed, dressed in my camouflage pants, shirt, and put on my water-fowling wind breaker and took a quick run out to get coffee. Then it was off to my friend Todd’s house where we piled into his truck and headed for the boat ramp.

2014_Oct_25_DuckHunting_6You can’t see much, but that is one of us guiding the boat back onto the ramp. Once we were in the water we had a brief moment of fear when the engine wouldn’t turn over, but Todd quickly figured out he had a loose wire and we were off. We motored into the marshes and found our spot.

I wish I could have snapped a picture of the falling stars, but I couldn’t quite get the timing right. As we waited for the sun to come up we saw at least four sparkling tracers cutting through the night.

One of my favorite pictures is taken looking up the channel as the sun came up with the reeds bending over our heads. 2014_Oct_25_DuckHunting_7
It actually started out as just a bit chilly, but as we were waiting for the sun to come up the temperature dropped and I was glad I had my windbreaker and gloves. When the sun finally did come up the birds started to move around a bit, but it was a slow day. We shot at the first group coming fast down the channel and one of the other guys thinks he feathered one but they got away.

A short time later a wood duck came in crossing from right to left. I hit it with my first shot and we kicked on the motor go pick it up. I was super excited to get my first bird of the season – especially as it was the last bird we saw.

The day was too calm and nice and after the sun was fully up we spent an hour without seeing any more birds so we called it a day.

It amazes me how the ride out seems so short, but getting out to the hunting spot in the dark seems to be much further away from the launch.

My bird is now boneless meat in my freezer and I am thinking I am going to make some duck for dinner tomorrow night.

My favorite piece of gear (besides my Benelli M2) of the day is my Waterfowl Adjustable Shell Belt which makes drawing and reloading fast and easy.

The belt also has interior zippered pockets to hold wallets, keys, and whatever else you have. I highly recommend it if you don’t have one.
