Global Warming – Science Or Popular Opinion

Guess what, science isn’t a popularity contest. Just because 25% of people don’t believe something doesn’t make it true. Empirical evidence and data make something true, and sadly, the mounting evidence is that humanity is having a net negative effect on the planet’s ecosystem.

Do we gamble and lose everything on the chance all the evidence is bad? I don’t like gambling when the chips on the table are my children and grandchildren’s lives.

The Walking Dead (Season 5, Episode 14)

Episode 14, Spend

Summary:

Spend opens with Father Gabriel looking over his new church in Alexandria. He seems haunted and sad and starts to tear apart a bible. Clearly he’s a little unsettled.

Daryl heads out on his brand new awesome motorcycle while Noah meets with the mayors husband. Noah wants the mayors husband who is an architect to show him how to maintain the town.

Eugene shows a team of scavengers some piece of hardware and tells them to just go get them, he doesn’t want to leave the compound. Whatever the parts are, they are important to keep the power grid up and running. Glenn, Noah, and Tara take the mayors son out on the run to go get the parts they need for Eugene to fix the power grid. When the Scavenger Team gets to the depot it turns out they did take Eugene with them, which surprises me. Why take the guy you need to fix the power grid if you get the parts? I have a feeling Eugene is going to die this episode.2015_TWD_S5_E14_Tara_Eugene

Glenn checks the front of the building and there is a huge horde behind the fences.

Inside things at first seem clean, but there is an internal fence holding back a smaller internal horde. Eugene and Tara go out and find a box of whatever they are looking for and Eugene confirms it is what they need.

Just when it looks like everything is going well the mayors kid gets attacked by an armored military walker, and as he’s shooting it he triggers a hand grenade on its vest. When Glenn recovers the warehouse is in shambles and there is fog everywhere – and the mayors kid is dead. To make matters worse the walkers are now free.

Glenn, Noah and Eugene are on their feet but Tara is down and appears to be bleeding. There is a brief scuffle with a walker and then the survivors of Team Scavenger flee into an internal office in the warehouse. Then dammit, the mayors kid isn’t dead, he’s just stuck on some metal. Which means RESCUE MISSION! While the others go out to save the mayors kid Eugene puts Tara on his shoulder and makes a run for the van. I want him to make it but I’m afraid Tara is going to turn and eat his backside.

When Glenn reaches the mayors kid he is spiked through his left shoulder and lower legs but the dude is screaming which is bringing in the walkers. The mayors sun gets devoured, but not before telling Glenn that the other guys on his patrol who were eaten didn’t run, he and his buddy did – which resulted in their deaths.

And history repeats itself. The punk friend of the mayor’s kid runs and gets Noah killed, and then Glenn only decks him. He should have skinned him alive. They head back to Alexandria multiple people short – and I’m not even sure if they have the parts they went for?

While Rick is walking around town he asses by Jesse in her garage. Someone took apart her owl sculpture, which gives Rick the chance to “look into it” for her. Which leads Rick to a conversation with the drunk husband of Jesse. Pete (the husband) wants to be friends. I’m not sure if Pete is a drunk or just drinking because he can see what’s happening between Rick and Jesse? Did Pete see them a the party together?2015_TWD_S5_E13_JesseRick

Back in town Jesse’s kid who caught Carol stealing guns is hiding in her house. He wants cookies – she’s being a b*tch. She tells him if he can steal a bar of chocolate for cookies plus one for her she’ll make him cookies. And if he gets caught and talks he’ll regret it.

Out at a construction site we get a hint about some badness coming. A sign there says “Big Things Are Coming.” Shortly after a horde comes out of the woods and Abraham is the only one there with any balls. When an idiot shoots the hydraulics on a bull dozer the girl in the bucket gets dumped and while everyone else runs Abraham goes to save her.2015_TWD_S5_E14_FrancineAbraham

He sticks her in the cab of a loader while he stands there to face off with the horde. He kicks ass which makes the others, or at least one of them, find their courage. After they kill the small horde Francine decks the pecker who tries to minimize the fact that they were going to leave her behind. The pecker head then goes back to town and resigns. He thinks Abraham will make a better foreman.

In Alexandria we start to get the impression that Pete is beating his wife and possibly his kids. Which I guess is what gives Rick his opening to go kill him? Which is exactly what Carol tells Rick he has to do.

And then to end the episode Gabriel goes to the Mayor and tells her Team Rick is evil and will end up ruining their paradise. Gabriel accuses Rick of being a devil cloaked in in light. The mayor thanks him and tells him she has a lot to think about. I hope she understands he’s a nutjob, but of course Glenn will be rolling in shortly with the news that her son is dead as well – which can’t possibly help how she sees Team Rick.

And the last thing we hear is the van coming back and Glenn screaming for help.

Things are about to turn bad in Alexandria.

Things I loved about this episode…

  • Daryl’s new motorcycle is awesome! I want it.
  • The mayors husband having oatmeal and giving his notebook to Noah. It was kinda touching.
  • Big Things Are Coming sign where Abraham is scavenging parts to build more wall.
  • Abraham rescuing Francine at the construction site. He’s got balls. 2015_TWD_S5_E14_AbrahamM16
  • Glenn and Noah getting stuck in the glass turnstyle thingy. I hated it because it would suck, but loved it because of how it made me feel sick inside.
  • Eugene standing up to the coward punk who got Noah killed.

Things that I didn’t like about this episode…

  • Tara’s horrible gun safety. She racks her Uzi while it is pointed at Noah. Come on girl, you could have cut him in half with lead.
  • Taking Eugene into danger. Not a good idea. At least leave him in the van where you can run the part out and check before leaving. But don’t take him in.
  • OMG – Noah just got eaten. I hope Glenn goes out and kneecaps the coward who caused it to happen.
