Infection (2019)

Infection takes place in Venezuela. It tells the story of a father dealing with the loss of his wife. All while trying to keep life normal for his son. The first half hour is a little bit slow. I’d sit tight though. Infection is well done. The slower parts hint at what is to come.

One of my favorite parts of Zombie Movies is that transition from “everything is okay” to “holy f*ck, people are eating people”. There are several awesome zombie horde scenes and they are top notch. I have to be honest, if the movie had continued to focus on the zombies this would have scored a 100/100.

Infection does atmosphere well. The film makers did a 28 Days Later quality job on the post apocalypse world. The fear and urgency of how fast the situation can change was captured amazingly well in this film.

Infection Scoring

So what cost this move 21 points and why did it end up with a rank of 79/100? It has awesome zombie violence. The special effects are well done. The acting is excellent. So why did it get dinged? Please don’t let this keep you from watching, Infection, it is Worth Your Time, but it would have been even better if the focus had stayed on the zombies and the survival, but the end is one of those classics. I don’t want to ruin it, but it is a wee bit predictable.

#Alive (2020)

The first zombie movie I watched today was just so bad I had to find something better! My brother recommended a South Korean film named #Alive.

#Alive is a zombie action, psychological thriller about a young man who is isolated in his apartment building after the zombie apocalypse starts.

As he deals with isolation and listening to his family die he finally breaks and goes on a golf club wielding rampage. At least until he panics and finds himself surrounded. It turns out leaving your shelter because you’re pissed isn’t such a good idea.

The movie overall is really well done. The special effects are top notch, and the zombie action is awesome. There are a bunch of well done scenes with zombie swarms, and the main character, Oh Joon-woo, played by Ah-In Yoo does an amazing job acting out the fear and gradual decline into anxiety fueled crazy that any one of us would fall into.

That decline took Oh to the edge, and he would have fallen over if another survivor wasn’t there to give him hope. This was one of my favorite parts of the movie. Watching Oh prepare and scavenge was just really well done.

The zombie horde scene between the two apartment blocks is one of the best I’ve seen.

If you like Zombie Movies, this is a must watch, as it scored a perfect 100/100.

You can also watch the American remake Alone, but it didn’t hold up as well and scored a 73/100.

Zombies Have Fallen (2017)

The description of Zombies Have Fallen makes it sound like this is going to be an awesome move:

A young woman who possesses the supernatural powers and visions of an upcoming apocalypse is aided by a retired bounty hunter who must protect her from those who wish to use her abilities for evil.

So I was a little disappointed when the movie started playing and it really had nothing to do with zombies. The acting is not that good, the dialogue is mostly silly, and the special effects are atrocious. There is a fight sequence in the woods where the girl just waves her hands and the bad guys with guns just kind of flop on the ground.

After being astounded by how bad this movie is I did a little web searching. Per the internet this movie was made for about 500 Stirling pounds. That is just under $622 US.

That budget makes the movie make a lot more sense. This is a very small budget film if those numbers are accurate. Based on watching the movie, the numbers do seem real to me. I’m not trying to be hyper critical, I’m just being honest.

Zombies Have Fallen Scoring

I watched this movie so you didn’t have to. It was truly “Just Bad” and scored a 1/100. On the plus side, I hope the people who worked on it learned something from the experience. Why? Because I hope that will make their future projects better!

Deadsight starts off strong. A man wakes up with bandages on his eyes, barely able to see. Outside, people are slowly turning into hungry zombies.

The town sheriff wakes up, oblivious to what is happening in her town, at least until she runs into her first zombie, and eventually our half blind friend from the ambulance.

Deadsight Scoring

There are a few decent zombie scenes, and the acting and special effects are decent, but the movie lands firmly in the “Rainy Day Movie” category with a score of 55/100. If you like suspense type movies, you might rank this a bit higher, but for me there weren’t enough zombies, and the ending was a little predictable. Still, this is worth a watch, just wait for a rainy day…

The Last Starship (2017)

The Last Starship was originally released as Monsters. I’m pretty sure that switching the name like this is to try and outrun poor reviews. That should tell you something about what is to come.

The Last Starship is a mix of steampunk, zombie apocalypse, science fiction. What do you get when you blend all that together? Let’s just say if I wasn’t already drinking whiskey, I would have started. The movie was made in the UK, and while it was filmed in English, a lot of the dialogue feels like it was poorly translated.

I have to be honest, I could barely keep track of what was going on. There is a lot of weird dialogue.

Zombie Town (2007)

Zombie Town is a low budget zombie movie, but that doesn’t mean its bad. The acting is actually pretty good and the special effects were better than I would have expected. At least for a low budget film.

There was also plenty of gore and a decent level of violence, which is always appreciated, including the slug bursters:

Yes, I think the special effects guy liked the movie aliens. The scenes where the bursters are coming out of the bodies totally took me back to the first Alien movie.

Zombie Town has some slow spots here and there, but it is also true to itself, which wins it a few points. I know some zombie purists beat this movie up because of the slugs being the origin of the zombies, but I honestly don’t know what the difference between a slug or some invisible germ being the root cause.

My personal favorite line is when Jake and Randy pull up to the old folks home and everyone is running out. Jake’s “This can’t be good line,” followed up by the decision to go in and see what’s happening is just perfect zombie movie logic.

Zombie Town scores a 65/100, putting it at the upper end of the Rainy Day Movie segment. Save it for a dreary day and enjoy.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Revelation Trail (2013)

Revelation Trail is a western, zombie crossover. The movie suffers from the “too much set up” and backstory. We came to see zombies eating people, we don’t really need a half hour of backstory on the main character. The first thirty minutes could have been condenses to just the scenes with zombies, and the narrator saying, “The dead have risen, and a preacher and his family are some of the first to suffer.”

This is a good Rainy Day Movie. It has some slow spots, but there are also some decent action sequences. Revelation Trail scored a 57/100. What cost it points? It is a little slow to start, and heavy on dialogue. The zombies are actually quite well done, but there is too much exposition and unnecessary character development between the zombie action scenes.

If you are looking for a good Zombie Movie that also has action and gun play you can’t go wrong with Night of the Comet. It is older, but still holds up really well. If you want something that will put you on the edge of your seat I’d go with the perfect score 28 Days Later!

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Survival of the Dead (2009)

Survival of the Dead takes place on Plum Island in Delaware. We always go to Lewes and I’ve driven by Plum Island a thousand times, but never really paid attention to it, so it was interesting to see Plum Island play a central role in the movie. I also loved how the people (in the movie) who live on the island apparently have lived in a bubble that has kept them off the cost of Ireland? Loved the accents.

The first half an hour revolves around the survivors of a military unit making their way to Plum Island.

I kept watching, and couldn’t quite place the kid, then it struck me that the young guy, played by Devon Bostick, was the older brother from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”.

On a side note, from everything I know, Plum Island is basically a sand bar, so if you plan on going there when the zombie apocalypse starts in real life, you might want to rethink that plan.

Survival of the Dead is an interesting movie. I was hoping that Romero would hearken back to Dawn of the Dead (1978) with hordes of the undead trying to get to the survivors. If that is what you were looking for, this might not be the movie for you.

Survival of the Dead Scoring

Survival of the Dead is a low budget, decently acted zombie movie. At just four million to make, this is a “cheap” movie by Hollywood standards. Overall, Survival of the Dead earned itself a 73/100.

What cost it points? The first thing was the focus on the feud between the two families. The second thing was the lack of zombie hordes. There was a good bit of zombie violence, but it was mostly small scale stuff. Survival of the Dead is definitely Worth Your Time, it just could have been so much more.

Diary of the Dead (2007)

Diary of the Dead is the fifth George Romero movie in the series. It takes a slightly different, first person look at the Zombie Apocalypse, through the eyes of a small group of college students who get caught up in the biting while they were trying to make a movie for college credit.

The movie starts off a bit slow. We are twenty minutes in before our students encounter their first zombie. The survivors are fleeing town in an RV when they encounter a state trooper. The driver panics and floors it, driving over several other “people”.

This segues into the next phase of the movie. The RV driver feels guilty, because she thinks she killed people, and tries to kill herself. Her friends then take her to the worst possible place to go during the Zombie Apocalypse, and drive her to the hospital.

The survivors now realize the apocalypse is really happening, but for some reason the cameraman thinks that staying behind to power his camera is a reasonable decision here.

There is a little too much focus on the “first person” filming aspect of the movie. It would have been better if the movie focused more on the zombie action and not so much on the interpersonal relationships between the survivors.

I have to be honest though, if this movie was made by anyone other than George Romera, I’d probably be slightly less critical. It’s just that the first person shooting style doesn’t really change the fact that there wasn’t good zombie action until forty or so minutes in.

I did like the bad *ss deaf Amish guy, and his exit was fairly epic.

Diary of the Dead

Overall, Diary of the Dead is a Rainy Day Movie. It has some slow section, and some silly actions taken by the survivors, but if you save it for a dreary day its a good way to spend a hour and a half.

Diary of the Dead scored a 58/100. The things that cost it points were the slow start, lack of zombie hordes, and the first person camera stick wears thin after a while.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Night of the Living Dead is the movie that started it all. We owe George A. Romero so much for starting the Zombie Film genre. He started a billion dollar industry with less than a $120,000 dollar investment.

Its been several years since I watched Night of the Living Dead, and I was actually surprised how well it holds up to the years. The action starts quickly with Barbra, played by the lovely Judith O’Dea, visiting a cemetery with her brother. She is quickly attacked by the undead. While her brother falls to the first zombie, Barbra flees in her vehicle.

Barbra finds a farmhouse not too far away, where she meets Ben, played by Duane Jones. While Barbra struggles to cope with what is going on, Ben has already come to grips with the fact that the dead are hungry.

The characters are well rounded, and each of them has their own struggles and motivations. In the end, this is really the heart of every zombie movie, how do the survivors deal with the undead, and with each other?

George A. Romero really does an amazing job at showing the conflict inherent in any human interaction, and then how stress magnifies those emotions. Every writer and director who is thinking of making a Zombie Movie should watch this classic movie.

If you haven’t seen Night of the Living Dead, its is a much watch, and scores a 100/100. It is Worth Your Time.
