The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 11

For the eleventh day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a set of ATN PVS7-3 Night Vision goggles.

Night is one of the most dangerous times for us survivors after the end.  A flashlight is great if you can risk it, but what if you weren’t able to make it out of the city before dark on your last foraging trip, and now you’re trapped, the undead shambling everywhere around you.  Using a flashlight is going to attract a lot of attention, but you need to keep moving until you find a safe place to hole up.

That’s where the night vision goggles will save your bacon.  You will be able to move without attracting any attention once you practice the art of using these.  Just like everything else, practice, practice practice.  Go find yourself some crackheads and a bus.  Take everyone to an abondoned building (there are plenty around thanks to the economy) and just before dark, tell them you have ten ounces of crack in your pockets, then switch off the ligths and see if you can avoid them using the night vision.

Great training, and great fun.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 10

For the tenth day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a Riot Shield.

At just over five pounds it gives you the protection you need when you’ve run out of ammunication and your going to town on what’s left of the old folks home with your baseball bat or machete.  You need to learn to use you legs to push away as the undead hit the shield, then use the brief opening to take the head shot.  You can’t use it to just hold them off, they will rip your arm off while they pull the shield away if you let them.

Now’s the time to practice (preferably on the front lawn where all the neighbors can see you) – so go pay five of the the local junior high football stars to play an interesting game with you.  You get a nerf sword and they have to pull you to the ground.  If you can keep them at bay and beat them into submission with a nerf sword – you win.

Plus, when the undead start to eat your neighbors and they see you succesfully battling your way to the minivan with your riot shield, you can spare just a moment to give them the finger for all the times they called you crazy behind your back.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 9

For the ninth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a pair of Wellco Tactical Boots.

They are great warm weather boots that are comfortable for long hours of marching through ruined cities.

But keep a nice warm pair of insulated socks for when winter rolls around though.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 8

For the eigth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a pair of Wiley-X Tag 1 tactical gloves.

The highest risk location for small injuries in the post apocalyptic world is your finger and hands.  Broken glass, sharp metal, the debri of our old world, all just waiting to scrape and cut your hands and fingers.  Protect your digits from everything with these tactical protective gloves.  They are not only made with kevlar for scratch and puncture resistance, but also with nomex, making them fire resistant as well.

I also really like the above the wrist protection.  There are other great tactical gloves out there, but I like these because they come halfway up my forearms.

Oh, the spam.

My server must have made it onto the spammers lists this week.  I had several hundred spams, which gets old real quick when you are hitting spam, trash, spam trash, a hundred times a day.

I apologize if anyone who is new didn’t see their post make it through.  I may have put you in spam/trash hell in my overzealousness.

To combat them, I’ve added a new widget that requires you to do some simple math.  Hopefully the spambots are really, really dumb.

Sorry for the extra effort to do some math, but I had no choice.

Arghhh, spammers suck.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 7

For the seventh of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a long bladed machete.

Its not a weapon for the feint of heart.  Chopping through a few zombies dressed as nurses or worse, boy scouts and girl scouts will cause most people to hesitate, which will get you killed.  And that is just the psychological aspect of it.

Physically and technically the machete is the more difficult weapon to wield versus a non edged weapon.  Flesh and bone can bind around the blade if you strike the wrong spot, and you can easily cut yourself in the frenzy of combat, which even if its just a small cut, can kill you if you get zombie blood in it.

Practice, practice, practice.  The neck, the legs (to let you run from them) in rapid, powerful strokes.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 6

For the sixth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want an Ash baseball bat.

They are light, very strong, and are a great way to take down a zombie or three quietly and safely.  The risk of splatter is there, but less so than if your using an edged weapon, so even if you get surprised and don’t have your gas mask on, your likely to be just fine.

When your picking your bat, make sure you look at the grain and find one with long flowing grains.  Short, choppy grain is a likely sign the bat will not be as strong as a piece of wood with long grains.

The Walking Dead – Episode 6

The sixth and final episode aired tonight. Is bitter sweet, couldn’t wait for it to come on but I’m dreading the wait until next year.

Can’t believe that Shane goes crazy and thinks that Lori is going to take him back. The wonders of alcohol.

So how creep is the CDC guy?

Love that Glen is so hung over at breakfast.  How many times have we all said “Don’t ever, ever, let me drink again.”

I don’t think that test subject 19 volunteered, do you?

Love the old guy Dale.  What happens when the clock reaches zero?  Facility wide decontamination.  That doesn’t sound ominous does it?

I bet there are dead people in the basement. Going once, twice, and I was wrong.

So the doctor locks them in? – Does he not want to die alone?  I am sitting here cursing the writers.  They better not leave it hanging until next year – I will be so mad.

My older son thinks they all die and next season will be a new cast – I am hoping he’s wrong.  It won’t be the same without Rick.

Axes on a steel door?  Try cutting his toes off one at a time, then go for his fingers.  He’s a wuss, he’ll open the doors.  I would have thought that the redneck brother would have understood the basic brutal requirement to make him open the doors.

So he finally opens the doors and the two woman decide to stay.  I hope Dale makes it out.

Run Dale run – they just blew a hole in the glass.  Come on Andrea, don’t kill Dale as well as you.   Do they make it?  Run!!!!

Sweet, Dale made it.  So glad that Andrea didn’t kill him.

Best line from the creepy CDC dude: “This is our extinction event.”

Was afraid about how they were going to end the season, but it was actually really good.   If it left them stuck in the CDC I would have cried.

So as they are driving away I couldn’t help but think that the open sided jeep is a really poor choice of vehicles when there are zombies about.  At least find one with hard sides.

Looking forward to the next rainy day so I can sit down and watch the first season on itunes in one shot while curled up under a blanket on the couch.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 5

For the fifth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a Nightstick NSR-9912 flashlight.

Its got several critical modes of operation all in one compact package.   The NSR-9912 allows the user to select a focused flashlight, floodlight, or dual light.  The flashlight mode is very useful for seeing what’s in the distance, but its a dangerous mode if your trying to walk or run because you tend to put the beam out in front of you, which leaves you at risk of tripping over what’s right in front of you.  That’s where the dual-light mode comes in.  It mixes the flashlight and floodlight modes, giving you the ability to see what’s directly in front of you as well as what’s in the distance.

The floodlight can be used by itself when you are holed up and need to illuminate a broad area.  Its the perfect mixed mode flashlight and is very useful when your running through the dark to escape the undead shambling behind you.  You wan’t be tripping and falling when using the mixed flashlight and floodlight mode.

The 25 Days of Undead Christmas – Day 4

For the fourth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a solar backpack.

There is no more coal fired power plants and even if you find a generator, the noise will bring the undead in for miles around.  Try camping without a flashlight at night and see what your field of vision is when your waving around a flaming torch.  Very easy for the undead to sneak up on you.  What you need is a way to charge up batteries while your hiking across country looking for the perfect place to make into a fortified and defensible nest.

That’s where Voltaic solar backpacks come in.  You can charge up your batteries and be able to have a nice focused beam of light to shine into the darkness when you hear something in the woods.  Is it a deer, or something more sinister?  Now you will know before its right on top of you.

Okay, and there is also your MP3 player so you don’t go crazy.   But be reasonable and only put one earbud in, you need to hear what’s around you.
