For the seventeenth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a suture kit.
Its really more than just a normal first aid kit. The duct tape if for the normal cuts and bruises and temporary wound closure, but when you slice your leg open jumping through a plate glass window your going to need to put some sutures down or leave a bloody trail for the undead to follow you.
This kit is light, small, and provides enough sutures to close a few nice sized wounds. The one thing I’d find is a few extra sutures to pack in there. The ER is going to be a nightmare scene after the undead start biting people, so I’d suggest getting them now before it gets too bad.
For the sixteenth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a Leatherman Surge Multi-Tool.
I’ve owned a couple different brands of tools like this, and I have actually snapped off the pliers and had the screwdriver head twist off. So it is worth it to spend more money and get a better quality product here. After all, your not going to be carrying a toolbag around with you, so this little baby is going to become your best friend.
For the fifteenth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a MSR Water filter.
The runs will slow you down and make you tired, not a good thing when you never know when your going to need to run for it. The MSR water filter will purify any standing pool of water shy of raw sewage into clean, clear, refreshing water.
Its light, relatively small, and will keep you from getting the squirts. Its especially useful when you can’t light a fire but have a few toilet bowels still half full of water. An invaluable tool for surviving after the undead have taken over the world.
For the fourteenth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want duct tape.
Its got a thousand and one uses. Fixing tears in gear, holding your flashlight to the end of your weapon and closing up minor wounds are just a few.
Its also an easy way to bind up anyone who you might need to immobilie for any reason, it is also disposable, so if they turn you don’t have to worry about losing your rope after you splatter brains about.
Let me know the other nine hundred and ninety five uses for duct tape I’ve missed below.
For the thirteenth day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want an Optimus Single Burner Hiking Stove.
Its, small, light, and can burn anything from white gas, kerosene, diesel, to jet fuel so it will be relatively easy to get a ready fuel supply for some time.
Psychologically there is something very important about having a hot meal, especially when it starts to get colder. Take the lid off your can of soup and pop it right on top of the burner, and in under four minutes you will be eating hot food. This is a very useful tool for when you can’t risk a fire because it will draw too much attention, and especially when your room hopping in a city looking for supplies. You can’t build a fire on the thirtieth floor of a high rise to cook, but with this single burner stove your worries are over – well, except for the undead that is.
For the twelth day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a Hallagan breaching tool.
The biggest problem most people are going to face is the transition from going to a store to get what you need to finding or making everything. At first the ability to find what you need will be relatively easy, but as the time from day zero keeps passing supplies are going to get harder and harder to find. The obvious places are going to be hit first and drained of supplies.
After a few months things are going to get scarce and the places that were too hard to get into. That’s were the Hallagan breaching tool comes into play. It is a two man operation, but it is a very fast way to get through doors. When toilet paper gets scarce enough and your going into an apartment building taking down doors one at a time this is the tool you will need.
When your done playing hide and seek with the crack heads in the abandoned warehouse practice your door breaching skills with the Hallagan.
For the eleventh day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a set of ATN PVS7-3 Night Vision goggles.
Night is one of the most dangerous times for us survivors after the end. A flashlight is great if you can risk it, but what if you weren’t able to make it out of the city before dark on your last foraging trip, and now you’re trapped, the undead shambling everywhere around you. Using a flashlight is going to attract a lot of attention, but you need to keep moving until you find a safe place to hole up.
That’s where the night vision goggles will save your bacon. You will be able to move without attracting any attention once you practice the art of using these. Just like everything else, practice, practice practice. Go find yourself some crackheads and a bus. Take everyone to an abondoned building (there are plenty around thanks to the economy) and just before dark, tell them you have ten ounces of crack in your pockets, then switch off the ligths and see if you can avoid them using the night vision.
For the tenth day of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a Riot Shield.
At just over five pounds it gives you the protection you need when you’ve run out of ammunication and your going to town on what’s left of the old folks home with your baseball bat or machete. You need to learn to use you legs to push away as the undead hit the shield, then use the brief opening to take the head shot. You can’t use it to just hold them off, they will rip your arm off while they pull the shield away if you let them.
Now’s the time to practice (preferably on the front lawn where all the neighbors can see you) – so go pay five of the the local junior high football stars to play an interesting game with you. You get a nerf sword and they have to pull you to the ground. If you can keep them at bay and beat them into submission with a nerf sword – you win.
Plus, when the undead start to eat your neighbors and they see you succesfully battling your way to the minivan with your riot shield, you can spare just a moment to give them the finger for all the times they called you crazy behind your back.
For the eigth of my 25 Undead Christmas presents I want a pair of Wiley-X Tag 1 tactical gloves.
The highest risk location for small injuries in the post apocalyptic world is your finger and hands. Broken glass, sharp metal, the debri of our old world, all just waiting to scrape and cut your hands and fingers. Protect your digits from everything with these tactical protective gloves. They are not only made with kevlar for scratch and puncture resistance, but also with nomex, making them fire resistant as well.
I also really like the above the wrist protection. There are other great tactical gloves out there, but I like these because they come halfway up my forearms.
