I have been resting a few days between walks as I switched to walking outside. I definitely feel the outside walks more than the treadmill workouts, but I want to make sure I stay below 240, and that motivated me to keep walking today.

It was rainy and dreary this morning but the sun came out around lunchtime so even though my bones were hurting I forced myself to go for a walk while listening to Iron Kissed. If you like science fiction this is a great series about a shapeshifter who gets pulled into some messy werewolf business.

Anyway, I did finish my river walk route, so woot woot. Even if it did take me longer than normal.

My wife went with me today which was really nice. Walking outside is very different than on the treadmill where I can watch a movie or television, so it was nice to have some company. She of course is in much better shape than I am, and she reminded me she does over 10,000 steps at work everyday. Bragger. So for her a three mile walk is no big deal.

It was such a beautiful day that I couldn’t stay inside so I did my oblong walk down to the river and back.

Walking outside is 100% different than the same workout on the treadmill. I’m not sure if it is just the wind, the slightly varied terrain and elevation or the fact that the ground isn’t moving beneath me (like it does when you are on a belt) but I feel this 3 mile workout way more than I do 4.5 treadmill workouts.

Last time I did a river walk I upped the distance to 3.6 miles, and that was just too far. My back wasn’t exactly flaring, but it took a good week before I was able to feel safe doing another workout.

Hopefully I’ll feel good tomorrow, but time will tell.

I got on the treadmill today with a target of getting to 79 minutes, but life got in the way and after just 20 minutes I had to jump off to take a critical call.

Sure, I could have jumped back on when I got off, but I got sucked into email and by the time I was ready to shut off my computer, it was time to get a shower and hit the hay.

Yes, I know I started this journey on the treadmill, but after reading that walking outside takes more effort, I’ve started to walk outside when the weather allows.

Today I did my longest walk outside yet, at 3.66 miles.

I started at 2:20PM and finished at 3:35PM, so I think I held a fairly steady pace of about a 20 minute mile.

Walking outside does feel completely different than doing the same workout on the treadmill. I definitely feel this much more than my last workout, which was on the treadmill because it was raining.

I really wanted to go for a walk outside again now that its warming up but it has been pouring rain all day, so on the treadmill I went. No real complains, I’m well rested after taking most of last week off due to a head cold.

60 MIN CHALLENGE – DAY 151

Today is the first day I’ve been able to walk after having a horrible head cold last week. I’ve also had this strange pain in my shoulders, which may be because of how I hold onto the treadmill, so I decided to walk outside now that its nice out.

I also read that walking on a treadmill is lower impact than walking normally, due to the belt proving some assistance. I started with a 3.06 mile walk to start and will gradually increase it as the weather gets warmer. I was roughly 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17.2 Celsius) which wound nice, but there was a strong wind off the river that was really chilly.
