The Last Of Us Season 1, Episode 9

Look for the Light is the ninth and final episode of The Last of Us Season 1. I am box excited and scared. How am I going to live without my weekly fix of The Last of Us?

The Last of Us: Look for the Light

Spoilers Below

I give detailed, blow by blow details as I review. If you want to skip the spoilers jump down to the Scoring!

If you have watched Look for the Light let me know if you agree with my Scoring Below.

Ellie’s Mom (Flashback)

The season finale opens with a pregnant woman running through the woods. In the distance we can hear infected screams. She makes it back to a farmhouse only to find its empty. When her water breaks she reaches down and finds a thick yellow mucus instead of clear fluid.

Is she infected? Is this Ellie’s Mom? Yes, yes it is. Her name is Anna.

The pregnant woman flee up the stairs but its too late. One of the infected has found her. As the infected attacks the woman gives birth. Ellie is Born.

When Anna’s friend return to the farmhouse they find her, bitten and infected – but afraid to nurse her daughter. Anna lies to her group. Anna emphatically says that she cut the cord before she was bit. A lie, but likely the only reason that Ellie is alive.

Anna begs Marlene to kill her as the virus takes over. Marlene struggles, but does what’s needed. Baby Ellie cries as the sound of the gunshot startles her.

Ellie (Current Day)

When we snap back to the current timeline Ellie is sitting in the back of a truck. Joel scavenges supplies and a boardgame as Ellie zoned out, lost in her own thoughts.

The two move through a city and are forced to climb a sky scraper to get a better view.

Ellie seems off. Something is eating at her. At least until Joel lifts her up to the next level in the building and she comes face to face with a Giraffe. It looks like the local zoo animals escaped and have survived.

As Joel and Ellie look out over the surviving animals Joel pitches Ellie on returning to Tommy. Ellie tells him there is no half way. They need to finish what they started.

The two find an old army post and Joel breaks down and tells Ellie how she has helped him. How she healed him. The bond for a moment before continuing there trek. At least until some a-hole throws a flash bang grenade at them. Ellie is dragged away as Joel is clocked in the head with the butt of a rifle.

Soldiers

When Joel wakes up he is with Marlene. The Fireflies have them. Marlene wants to know how Joel did it. She lost a lot of people crossing the country. Joel wants to see Ellie but Marlene tells him he can’t. Ellie is about to go into surgery. They want to remove the Cordyceps from Ellie – from her brain.

Joel demands they take him to Ellie but Marlene doesn’t care. She has excuses, and she claims to understand, but she would betray Anna’s trust if it means saving the world.

Marlene tells her mom to take Joel to the highway. If he tries anything, kill him. Before they leave Marlene hands Ellie’s switch blade to one of the soldiers. When they let him go he can have the blade to defend himself.

Joels Revenge

As the soldiers guide Joel downstairs he attacks. They didn’t stand a chance. He picks up one of their rifles and begins to talk through the facility, killing Fireflies as he goes.

Joel is death.

When he finally make it to the OR he demands they unhook Ellie. The first doctor finds out quickly that Joel is not kidding.

Joel picks up Ellie and carries her to the elevator. As a father I felt the moment that he stairs down at her in his arms. I would sacrifice the world for my chidden. The good of the many makes perfect sense until the good of the few impacts your family.

Marlene confronts Joel in the parking garage. She tells him, begs him, to think of the many. To think how Ellie could help them fix the world. He doesn’t care. Joel kills Marlene before taking Ellie off in a truck.

Joel & Ellie Escape

Ellie wakes up in the truck, still have drugged. Joel tells her lies. He doesn’t want her to know the decision he made for both of them. For all of them.

The Mountains

As Ellie and Joel hike through the mountains he tells her about Sarah. He tells Ellie he thinks they would have liked each other.

As they walk Ellie admits that the first person she killed was Riley. This leads Ellie to demand that Joel swear that the lies he told her about the fireflies was true.

Joel swears, not showing any signs that he is being deceptive.

The credits roll.

Season 1 of The Last of Us is over.

Look for the Light Scoring

I couldn’t look away for a second of Look for the Light. I can only give it a 100/100 and say it is Worth Your Time.

Things I loved about this episode:

  • Ellie’s mom looks just like Ellie. Did they use her real mom or was that all CGI?
  • Pedro Pascal. He is just amazing.
  • Bella Ramsey. She is just amazing.
  • The chemistry between Pedro and Bella is a beautiful thing. It makes the whole world and the story so much more believable.
  • When Joel goes full Rambo to save Ellie. He is a dangerous man.
  • Joel putting Marlene down. I love how there was no indecision. Joel knowns Marlene would just come after Ellie. It is a quick and easy decision for Joel.

Things I hated about this episode:

  • Are the infected not attracted to animals? The giraffes were cool but would they really be alive in a world infected with a mind controlling fungus?
  • Marlene just lets Joel go? No way she wouldn’t have realized that he would kill for Ellie at this point.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 9

Triggerfinger starts with Lori, unconscious and hurt after her car rolled over. A walker is doing its best to get to her. She looks like an easy late night snack. At least until she wakes up starts to fight.

Rick, Glen, and Hershel are hiding in the bar where they were last seen at the end of Episode 8. More newcomers show up, looking for their friends, who Rick just put down last episode.

Rick tries to defuse the situation, but the newcomers shoot out the windows in reply. Rick’s plan is to have Glen run for the car as Hershel covers him, and Rick holds the front entrance. We then get to see that Hershel may not like guns, but he does know how to use one. Glen is not dealing with the stress well and has frozen, but luckily for him the newcomers flee. They don’t know how many people are in the bar. But they do know they’ve already lost at least three of their own. Unfortunately for one of the newcomers, his buddies leave him behind when they flee. He jumps down off the roof and ends up speared on a cast iron fence.

On The Fence

This is one of those scenes that I just don’t get. This guy, or kid as Rick puts it, just tried to shoot them from a roof. Put a bullet in the kid’s head and get back to the farm! Instead, Rick convinces Hershel to amputate the leg. This leads to them being surrounded before Rick eventually just rips the dude’s leg up off the spike.

This Is Going To Hurt A Little

Out on the road Shane finds Lori, and lies to her that Rick has returned to the farm to get her into the car. When they show up Shane drops the pregnancy news publicly. Now Carl and everyone else knows. When Shane get’s her alone she tells him that Rick knows, that she told her husband what happened. Shane tries to convince her it was “okay”, that what they did was a good thing, but Lori isn’t buying it. If only she’d been so strong a week after she thought her husband was dead.

We then see a horribly emotional scene between Daryl and Carol as she tries to let him know he’s part of their group. He rages at her, saying horrible and cruel things. She just takes it, knowing he needs to vent. DId her previous life of abuse giving her the ability to take it? It’s sad, but also sweet that she cares enough about Daryl to take his pain.

With Rick, Hershel, and Glen missing, Shane, Daryl, and Andrea are about to go on a search mission. As soon as Maggie sees Glen she runs to him, bypassing her dead in a sad snub.

Ouch

Once inside Maggie pulls Glen aside and he tells her that her dad saved him, and then Rick saved them all, but that he froze. He froze because he was scared of losing her, and now he feels guilty.

Triggerfinger ends with Lori telling Rick that Shane believes her baby is his (it probably is) and that Shane is telling others that Rick is going to get them all killed with his bad decisions.

Triggerfinger Scoring

I’m giving Triggerfinger a 76/100, making it Worth Your Time. There isn’t a lot of Zombie action, which cost it some points.

Z Nation Season 3, Episode 9

Heart of Darkness opens with Citizen Z and Kaya back on the air, calling out to anyone, everyone. But especially the Operation Bite Mark team. As Kaya in the Skya is speaking, her broadcast is interrupted. Overpowered by a stronger signal. Murphy has just gone on the air, announcing he has the Zombie vaccine.

Radio Free Murphy

As Murphy is putting out his message Warren sneaks into Murphytown. She tries to snatch him while he’s vulnerable (pooping) but is thwarted by Zombies. The miss forces Warren to realize she needs help. No matter where it might come from. Regardless of what Hector advises, Warren is going to try and get some questionable help. She wants to get the imposter EScorpion and his Red Hand band to help them.

The Red Hand

As Team Warren is looking for the Red Hand they encounter a car full of car thieves the Red Hand “punished” before running into Hopper. Hopper is willing to take them to the Red Hand. He says he doesn’t work for them, he’s just their drug dealer, but he seems very sketchy to me.

Hopper leads Warren, Hector, and Dr. Sun Mei into the sewers under Seattle. As they walk deeper into the darkness they hear what they think are rats. But when they shine their lights on the walls they see its Zombie Hands, still crawling about. Maybe searching for their bodies.

Handy Hands

As Team Warren delves deeper into Seattle’s underground, Murphy is trying to bribe 10K with more vaccine, claiming it will free 10K from his control. 10K refuses, not willing to give up Warren. 10K is led away to do manual labor as punishment. Shortly after, Citizen Z tries to reach out to Murphy, having tracked him down because of his broadcast. Murphy doesn’t want anything to do with Operation Bite Mark.

The Seattle Underground

In Seattle’s underground, we get a taste of how crazy the Red Hand is. They’ve rigged up barbed wire and some electric to put the “Guilty” to death. At least whomever the Red Hand says are guilty. We then get to meet the new EScorpion.

The EScorpion Imposter

Javier Vasquez, the DEA agent whose wife and child were killed by Hector, the real EScorpion, has apparently lost his mind. He appears to think he really is EScorpion.

It seems like Warren might be reaching Javier but once she says his name he get’s pissed. He has her thrown into the lockup like Hector and Dr. Sun Mei.

Things take a strange turn after Warren gets put in the same cell as Hector. He chokes her out and disappears. Why did he choke her out if he could escape?

When Javier has Warren and Dr. Sun Mei brought to him Hector attacks, trying to take out Javier. Hector ends up being subdued by Red Hand men, which gives Hector the chance to remind Javier who both of them are. With the pain of his wife and child’s death thrown up in his face by Hector, Javier has his men let Hector loose so he can kill him in a “fair” fight.

Hector get’s stabbed multiple times before Warren steps in, putting a machete through Javier before taking his head, putting him out of his misery. The king is dead, long live the king. With Javier/EScorpion dead, the Read Hand apparently falls into Warren’s control. Or at least it looks that way by the trucks we see rolling out, presumably to go after warren.

The end of the episode has two major revelations. The first is that Doc and Addy have found Lucy, and she looks older than she should be.

Lucy

We see one of Lucy’s warders shoot a double barrel before the scene cuts back to Hectors body on the floor. Which leads us to the final revelation of the episode as his eyes open, tinged with yellow.

Heart of Darkness Scoring

Heart of Darkness scored a 70/100, mainly due to its lack of any significant Zombie violence.

iZombie , Season 1, Episode 9

Patriot Brains kicks off with Liv leaving Lowell’s building just as Blaine is coming. She pulls her hood up to hide from Blaine as she leaves, but she now knows that her new boy toy is eating the brains of the teens that Major has been trying to help at the youth center. It only gets worse when Liv sees Julian and has vision from the breakfast brains she just ate in Lowell’s apartment. Julian and Blaine killed her breakfast.

28 Milliseconds Later

It only gets worse as Liv tries to sneak by. She looks into the back of Julian’s car and sees what can only by meals for Zombies.

Brains Delivery

Liv is horrified and stunned. How many people have died, and are going to continue to die to keep Blaine’s Zombies?

Zombie Rat Bites

While Liv is struggling with her moral dilemma, Ravi is taking his vitals, trying to figure out if his Zombie Rat bite is going to turn him. Liv tells Ravi that she saw her meal get murdered, but this is one of the kids that Suzuki supposedly found out at the cabin. It looks like team Ravi and Liv are about to start looking for the dirty Zombie Cop in the police department.

When Ravi goes to check up on Major, Major is watching a YouTube video on guns, and has what looks like a Beretta 92. It looks like Major is about to go on a Zombie hunt.

Major Gun Fetish

Meanwhile Liv has gone back to Lowell’s so she can confront him on where he gets his meals. Lowell says he hasn’t seen the violent visions and didn’t go looking them, but Liv isn’t letting him off the hook. She wants to know where he’s getting his brains, where Blaine’s base of operations is, which is the worst time ever for Lowell to drop the “I love you.” bomb. What an idiot.

Dead Paintballer

While Liv is confronting Lowell, a group of paintballers is out in the woods, but one of the targets gets killed in both worlds. He was already dead, but they tagged him anyway because they didn’t know at first.

Paintball Dead And Real Dead

As Ravi and Liv are examining the body Ravi let’s Liv know that Major is still focused on Julian as the Candy Man, but Major thinks its some weird body builder thing. Ravi’s just glad Major doesn’t think its Zombies.

After Liv has a snack of the victim’s brains, Clive and Liv begin to chase down the case.

With soldier brains onboard Liv feels the call to go play some paintball, and she kicks some butt on the field, at least until she finds the shell casing, but it doesn’t’ quite look like it was in the right place. The shell was between the tree and the body, but it doesn’t quite make sense because the shooter would have had to have been fifteen feet tall.

Meanwhile Major is trying to figure out how Julian was so strong. He thinks Julian’s gym would be a good start, and he only sounds mildly insane as he asks the gym trainer about eating brains to get jacked. This ends up backfiring when the trainer is talking about the incident later and Julian ends up overhearing. Major might be trying to find Julian’s source, but Julian is now trying to find him.

Back on the home front Lowell comes to beg forgiveness from Liv, and love will make you do crazy things, which is how he ends up agreeing to help Liv kill Blaine.

No Cross Species Transmission

As Ravi is telling Liv the good news that the Zombie Virus can’t jump species just before Clive shows up with some armed drone footage. They know how the shot came from where it did now. With a link to the victims’ ex wife’s new husband, who works on drones, they’ve got their murderer.

Later that night we see Liv and Lowell starting to enact their plan. With Liv’s sniper soldier brains on board, what better way to take Blaine out of the picture?

Blaine In The Crosshairs

Before we get to see if Liv is going to pull the trigger or not we cut over to Ravi’s house. Major has just gotten home, and the lights don’t’ work. He walks into the kitchen to find a maul on the table, but before he can wonder why, Julian has him. Julian wants to know who Major has told about his brains.

What The F*ck

Lucky for Major he’s still got his house keys in his hand and just barely escapes Julian’s initial attack, giving him just enough time to get to his bedroom and his Beretta 92.

Back on Sniper Hill, Liv chickens out, she just can’t pull the trigger. Come on, killing a killer doesn’t ruin you. You would have been doing the world a service!!! I can’t believe Liv chickened out.

Major calls Clive, afraid to call the police, but when Clive gets there Julian is gone, and there is no blood. Clive looks right at Major asks him about meds. Poor Major.

Meds

Back on Lowell’s deck Lowell, Liv’s new love interest decides that he’s going to finish what Liv couldn’t, and things don’t turn out so well for him. Blaine’s a killer, and he’s a thug.

Patriot Brains Score

Patriot Brains was another fun episode with some good twists and turns. I was going to give it an 80 but Liv not pulling the trigger cost it points with me, resulting in an episode that is still Worth Your Time at 74/100.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 9

The Deepest Cut begins with Huck talking to her mother, Elizabeth. Huck tells Elizabeth to keep the faith. Huck has given a lot to prove herself to her current companions. All she needs is more time.

Back with Hope and Iris, Huck is behind the wheel of their truck, motoring along in the dark. At least until she purposefully steers into an obstacle on the road, presumably to slow down their journey.

With the truck disabled, the group sets out on foot. This gives Felix a moment to remember when he first met Huck at her security interview. He’s brough back to the hear and now by a horde. The horde is tangled in barbed wire, dragging it along with them. The group makes it through, but Felix is hurt in the process. He gets a nice cut across the back of his ankle.

Elton & Silas

Meanwhile Elton is still trying to find Silas. After tearing into one of his books in a rage, he chases it into the rain and wind. His rage turns to worry as he picks up a page covered in blood. At the end of the blood trail Elton doesn’t find Silas though. Instead he finds Percy who is weak from blood loss or injury. It’s not quite clear yet. After Elton drags Percy across a river Percy stands up and asks Elton why he’s trying to help. Percy is going to die. Why? Was he bit? We don’t know yet. Then we find out that Elton is imagining his conversation with Percy. Elton’s subconscious was afraid it was a wrench wound, but it wasn’t. Percy has been shot.

Team Iris

When we come back from commercial Team Iris has found what looks like an old folks community center. Iris ends up with Huck as the team splits up to find something to fix their truck. As Iris and Huck explore, Huck uses psychological warfare, telling Iris how much faster she is than Hope. She is trying to plant the seed that maybe Iris’s dad isn’t in bad shape. Maybe Iris is just overthinking things.

As Felix unwraps his barbed wire injury he flashes back to the past and better times. He’s thinking about his boyfriend Bill.

When we come back from our next commercial break Felix rolls his ankle, hurting his wound further. As the team stops to let him rest he flashes back to a dinner with Bill and the girl’s father. Its revealed that Bill his going with the girls father, Leopold.

As Elton is trying to deal with Percy’s wound by applying a poultice, he’s faced with multiple walkers hungry for a quick snack. While Elton’s subconscious tells him its okay to leave Percy behind, Elton struggles with the reality of the situation. Subconscious Percy tells Elton that humanity has a fighting chance, like his mother knew was true, and to leave him behind. This is about when Elton goes Rambo, using Silas’s wrench to destroy some walkers in a purposely slow mo scene. Sadly, I think they shot it as an action scene but had to blue it up to make it more believable. Who is going to buy the kid in the mustard suit turning bad*ss? Right?

Huck’s Mission

After a short bit of soul searching Irish and team leave Felix behind so they can continue unhindered by his injury. As Felix is hugging Huck we see a flashback as she uses the blade of her spear to wound Felix during the fight with the walkers. Huck has achieved her goal of separating the girls from Felix, who might protect them from what is too come.

Iris is suspicious, but when she goes to talk to Hope, Hope doesn’t trust Iris’s gut. Later in the night Hope and Huck discuss the next steps. The next morning Huck has convinced Iris to set out on their own.

As the rain falls Elton is using the walkie he found on Percy to call to Felix. Huck answers his call. Elton is about to tell Huck where they are when Percy wakes up and slaps the walkie out of Elton’s hand. Percy tells him it was Huck who shot him.

Somewhere along the walk Hope has figured out the cipher they’ve intercepted and learns that there is an agent among them. Who exactly is Huck?

The Deepest Cut

The Deepest Cut scored a 55/100 as it struggled to generate a lot of suspense. All the backstabbing and intrigue was written on the walls. Please leave something for us to figure out or find out.

Z Nation, Season 1, Episode 9

Die Zombie Die… Again focuses on Mack and Addy. Addy is struggling, and Mack just wants to make things better, but some things you can’t fix.

Things turn freaky fast.

Addy and Mack are stuck in a loop, killed bay a large, angry zombie, over and over. And I do mean over and over!

Who was stuck? We are lead to believe it’s Mack, but then Addy is the one with the major revelation at the end of the episode. I get it, a twist adds to the excitement right? This one just didn’t land for me.

I have to be honest, I hate the psychological episodes. A brief flashback/dream sequence is fine, but when it goes on so long you can’t tell what’s real or not, that is just too much. Reality is tough enough to figure out. Don’t make me struggle while I’m watching TV! I watch TV for fun, not to get anxiety!

Die Zombie Die… Again Scoring

For me, Die Zombie Die… Again was Just Bad and scored a 29/100. That makes this episode Just Bad. I wish I could say you could skip it – but you can’t. There are important parts of the story you would miss if you just skipped it.
