If you are going to watch Army of Thieves (the prequel to Army of the Dead) and are expecting more than a passing few seconds with Zombies, you are going to be disappointed.

There is a brief bit about the Zombie outbreak on the news, and another short scene where Dieter is having a nightmare, but other than that, this is really a heist movie.

If I were grading on a heist movie scale this would be a 90/100, but I’m ranking this on the Zombie Movie Scale – because this is the prequel to a goddamn f*cking Zombie Movie!

Yes I am mad. I was hoping for a Zombie Movie with a heist in it. What I got was a Heist Movie that barely mentions the zombies. Army of Thieves earns itself a 20/100, making it Just Bad. It gets 1 point as a Zombie Movie. The other 19 points were all awarded because I like Dieter.

If you are looking for a Zombie flick, this isn’t it. If you need a fix I’d go watch Train to Busan to scratch that itch.

Rebirth (2020)

Rebirth was written and directed by Roger Conners. I am assuming it is a self funded passion project – but I am totally guessing.

The movie starts with two brothers visiting their family gravesite. We are then quickly introduced to our Zombies. These Zombies have glowing eyes.

There are just so many things that don’t quite work for Rebirth. The dialogue is a little rough around the edges. The special effects are not so great, and the movie forgets that the focus should be on the Zombies. I found the glowing eye effect to be very distracting. It felt like someone with poor CGI experience doing a school project. I’m sorry if you were the CGI coordinator. The special effect were just so poorly done.

All in all Rebirth earned itself a 10/100, making it Just Bad. I challenge you to watch this from start to finish without taking a drink. Yes, this movie made me want to drink. Not only want, but it made me actually drink. There was just no way to power through it otherwise. I’m a week man.

If you are looking for a decent low budget Zombie Movie I recommend The Battery.

Lazarus: Apocalypse / The Day of the Living Dead (2014)

For the life of me I couldn’t find The Day of the Living Dead. According to Prime it came out in 2021.

Surprise, surprise, it was originally released in 2014 as Lazarus: Apocalypse. If you read my Zombie Movie Reviews, you know this isn’t a good sign. Because anytime I see a name change for re-release, I get worried. Why else do it? The main reason I see is that the producer is trying to put a flower on a cow pie.

The Day Of The Living Dead

Spoilers Below:

So, how was The Day of the Living Dead? It feels like a homage to a mix of movie genres, including some adult ones. The film is shot in black and white and harkens back to 1950 detective movies and film noire. There are a few color shots here and there – and you guessed it, those that have some blood in them. Mixed in are several nude shots, mostly waist up save for one blurry full frontal.

It is hard to watch. Both because the violence is overdone and because the audio will make you want to turn off your speakers. Go watch this scene around the 22 minute mark and let me know if the audio doesn’t make your ears bleed.

Face Shredding

We then move onto the strange BDSM scene. It’s not strange because I have anything against BDSM. It’s strange because it doesn’t add anything to the movie. It does not play any part in the plot, and felt like it was randomly thrown in. If it was added for shock value all it did was distract from the Zombie parts of the movie.

Random BDSM

The Day of the Living Dead bills itself as a detective/Zombie Movie but its really more of a drama with a few zombies thrown in for fun. Or maybe to try and profit off the Zombie craze that was sweeping media back in 2014 when this was made.

Lazarus: Apocalypse Scoring

Because it was a letdown on so many levels, Lazarus: Apocalypse (The Day of the Living Dead) scored a 23/100. The focus wasn’t on the Zombies or the Apocalypse, and when you add in the not so great story, dialogue, and audio, you are going to put yourself in the Just Bad territory.

Finally, I suggest Cockneys Vs. Zombies if you are looking for something a little off the beaten path.

Zone of the Dead starts a bit rough. The movie appears to be a discount Serbian Zombie movie. It is filmed in English, but the dialogue is pretty bad. In fact the whole thing is pretty bad. How did I cope? I started to have a few drinks.

I watch these movies so you know what to watch, and what to avoid. This is definitely on the avoid list, and I’m pretty loaded at the moment, which means this is really bad. I was hoping the movie would get better as I drank more. I know that is probably not a great strategy – especially with a movie this rough around the edges.

Zone of the Dead is really not worth your time, so you owe me. It scores a 17/100, and is getting points for effort, but this is a Just Bad movie.

There are better ways to spend 101 minutes.

Killer Weekend (2018)

Killer Weekend was originally released as Fubar in 2018. Why the name change? I have no idea, but it does make me worry. It is usually not a good sign. Maybe they had to change it because the initial reviews were horrible? I guess I’m about to find out.

The premise is simple:

When a hopeless stag party goes on a mock zombie survival weekend, an unfortunate turn of events leave them fighting for their lives.

– Killer Weekend

The story starts out with a group of friends who have planned a paintball zombie adventure as a bachelor party. Based on the description, I was expecting it to turn out to be “real Zombies” but this is really just a dark comedy about a bunch of friends who become murderers. Each step down the path takes them further and further from who they are, or at least who they think they are.

Killer Weekend Scoring

This is not a Zombie Movie, so I’m only giving it a 16/100, but if you liked Tucker & Dale vs Evil, you might like Killer Weekend as well. It is nowhere near as good as Tucker & Dale vs Evil, but there is a bit of overlap in the main theme.

As a Non-Zombie movie its actually pretty good. There are a lot of one liners, and a good many of them land. I recommend having a few drinks and watching it – just don’t expect a Zombie Movie.

Pandemic (2009)

Pandemic is a very common name in this genre, so make sure you are looking at the movie from 2009. Pandemic from 2009 is the story about a cute veterinarian who finds herself in the midst of an infectious outbreak in the small town of Diablo.

This movie is over a decade old at this point, and while you might recognize Ray Wise, who plays General Matthews from what I think is his most iconic role as Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks, most of the other cast members haven’t been in anything super memorable.

Sydney Stevens played by Alesha Rucci, is the town vet, who first encounters the virus when it infects the horse of a local rancher who also happens to be conspiracy theorist.

Sydney does what every good veterinarian does when she hears that a human has been infected, and heads to the coroners office. This kicks off a call to the CDC, which ends up with the military swooping down on the town to isolate it.

Our conspiracy theorist believes the military let loose the virus to test how it impacts humans, and it’s not too long before we get confirmation that at the very least, the military has more knowledge than they let on when the vaccinate the local coroners assistant, who seems to know the players involved suspiciously well.

Pandemic is actually a decent movie if you are in the mood for a suspenseful drama. However, if you’re in the mood for a Zombie movie, don’t let Pandemic fool you. Regardless of the cool images in the promo, this isn’t a zombie movie, so it scores a 1/100, making it Just Bad if your a Zombiephile.

G – Zombie is a movie shot in India. I don’t mind reading subtitles, so I was more than happy to give the movie a shot. I turned it on, and did my best to follow along.

The movie, regardless of everything else, is slow to get to a boil. But the main issue is the language barrier. Maybe this movie makes perfect sense if you are a native Hindi speaker, but the subtitles appear to have been generated by a very bad auto interpretation system? Or maybe someone who barely speaks English and likes to drink?

The movie has a plot, but the constant guessing at what the actors are actually saying makes it hard to enjoy.

If you are looking for a good Zombie Movie, I’d keep looking. If you are looking for something a bit off the beaten path I’d suggest Cockneys Vs. Zombies.

The Last Hope (2017)

The Last Hope was originally released in 2017, but for some reason Amazon lists it as released in 2020? Is that when they purchased the rights or released it maybe?

Sadly, the The Last Hope could have been so much more than it was. There are some really wonderful Zombie hordes and fight scenes, but the story and dialogue are so all over the place that it is hard to follow.

Whoever made this movie also has a very poor outlook on men. There is a very strong rapey vibe at multiple points, which makes me worry for the writer/director. That came from somewhere, and it’s likely not for a good reason.

There is a lot of shaky camera work, and at times the audio seems muddled. The close in physical effects were all good (lots of blood) but the CGI gunshots were laughable at times.

Overall the attempt at a deeper story hurt The Last Hope a lot, it would have been so much more if it just stuck to a simple “Zombie Survival” theme and didn’t try to get a little deeper.

The Last Hope scored a 24/100, putting it in Just Bad territory. If your drunk and don’t want to follow the plot, a few of the fight scenes are worth watching however.

The Living Dead (2020)

The Living Dead is one of those blends of genre that probably sounded really cool when it was pitched. We are going to take a group of thieves, have them attempt a heist in an Undead infested estate, and see if they can survive.

What could be cooler than a heist movie with Zombies? It is interesting to not that this movie came out a year before Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves. Clearly that extra year of thought (and much higher budgets) paid off for the “Army of” movies.

This isn’t your standard Zombie Movie. It is quirky and at times hard to follow exactly what the writers were going for.

Trust me when I say you can bypass this movie, and thank me for taking a bullet for you in the process. I’m giving The Living Dead an 18/100. It is slow, not a great blend of two genres, and the story and characters overall aren’t well done.

After watching Zombie Road, my biggest questions is…what was this supposed to be?

As a college project, I applaud it. It’s just really hard to tell what its supposed to be.

A Shotgun Wielding Stunt Woman

The opening scene loops, then a radio announcer gives the movie a touch of direction. We also get a fight scene that ends with a little twist.

According to IMDB, this is the only media the star, Aileen McGuinness has been in. For some strange reason, I couldn’t stop thinking that this little project was all created. Was the writer/producer, Michael Hennessy was just trying to get a date with the girl. Do I have any reason to think that? No, I was just trying to figure out why this little short was created. The two reasons I came up with were, trying to get a date, and college project. I guess it could have been either or, or both.

Zombie Road Scoring

Zombie Road is a little over 20 minutes, but a lot of it is the same footage is repeated. I would have tightened it up and made it 10 minutes. Cutting out the repeats would have created a better end product. If this was a college project I’d have given it a 75/100. But as a stand alone short I’m giving it 22/100. One point per minute of my life this took to watch.

FYI, if you like the Toy Shotgun, I’m pretty sure they just spray painted one of these Toy Shotguns black.
