WHISKEY DREAMS – KNAPPOGNUE CASTLE 14 YEAR

I realized I’d never actually said the name of this whiskey until someone asked me what I was drinking this weekend – which made me try and say it, realize it sounded wrong, and then go look it up on the wondrous internets.

So how pronounce this excellent single malt’s name?

The nice people at the distillery actually put this right at the top of their web page:

Knappogue Castle Single Malt Irish Whiskey is named for the castle which inspired it, but the word itself has a meaning of its own. Knappogue (pronounced Nah’ Pogue) translates to hill of the kiss in Gaelic. Such a romantic word is only fitting for such a beautiful and iconic landmark.

So two syllables, and the K is silent. I’ve recently been on an Irish Whiskey kick, and I have to tell you I have now added Knappogue Castle to my bucket list. Its temporarily closed at the moment due to Covid-19, but when it opens, you can go visit at Quin Rd, Knopoge, Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. I’m hoping to get there and enjoy some whiskey and a medieval themed banquet which they are apparently known for.

If you’re a Whiskey Dreams fan, you know that I reviewed the Knappogue Castle 12 Year back in may, and gave it high marks for flavor and complexity with a score of 87/100.

A natural question is what does 2 more years in the barrel do for this Knappogue Castle 14 Year? And did I compare it to the 12 Year?

Knappogue Castle 12 & 14 Year

The short answers are, a lot, and yes I did. The 12 Year is well worth the money, and the 14 Year only adds to the taste and depth of the whiskey, adding in layers of taste that stick to the back of my tongue in a very pleasing way.

The 14 Year has a stronger initial flavor that carries through to the swallow, and doesn’t suffer from the same negative woody pepper aftertaste the 12 Year did. Those flavors hit the buttery cookie flavor I’ve come to love in Irish single malts, but dances with other hints of vanilla, spice, and leather that are tantalizing, earning this Knappogue Castle 14 Year a hard to beat 92/100.

Knappaogue Castle 14 Year Single Mat

Pros

  • Intoxicating vanilla and spice that swirl with depth.
  • Buttery cookies that dance on the palate, hinting at vanilla and spice that keep you sipping, trying to place the flavors.
  • A great value at $68.

Cons:

  • How long will I be able to get this before people realize how good it is and start hording?
  • Probably not a dram for someone just learning to appreciate whiskey.

WHISKEY DREAMS – TULLAMORE DEW CROCK

This Tullamore Dew Crock is manufactured by William Grant & Sons and according to the internet, it is the second largest selling brand of Irish whiskey.

Tullamore Dew Crock is triple distilled and aged in ex-bourbon and sherry casks. It is a blended whiskey that is well made to accent its positives while minimizing some of its downsides.

The nose has a light sweetness and a stronger alcohol burn. The pattern repeats itself when we get to the palate. The first sip is overwhelmed with alcohol which slowly subsides so you can appreciate the vanilla, butter cookies, and black licorice that I think comes from the time spent in the bourbon barrels.

I found that an ice cube or some water does this Tullamore Dew Crock wonders. It blunts that first sip burn and lets the sipper enjoy the vanilla sweetness and taste the subtle butter cookies before the swallow bring out that black licorice.

Overall I did enjoy drinking this Tullamore Dew Crock, but it needed a bit of water or ice to open up the flavors so I could really appreciate them. Then there is the cost factor. For $10 bucks more I can land me a single malt Knappognue Castle 12 Year, and that makes me feel like I should be getting more for the $40 bucks I spent on this Tullamore Dew Crock. Granted, I picked this up at my local store, and that price may not reflect the price where you are – but each sip of this Tullamore made me think about what I could have been sipping for an extra few bucks.

Take all that into consideration and this scores just well enough to be considered Sip Worthy, at 69/100 points.

Pros

  • Subtle flavors, good for someone learning what they like.
  • With a bit of water to soften the alcohol burn the sipper can really appreciate the vanilla, butter cookies, and black licorice this whisky picked up from the bourbon barrels.
  • Sip Worthy, but its on the edge of falling into “Mixed Drinks Only”.

Cons:

  • For $10 dollars more you can buy yourself a bottle of Knappognue Castle 12 Year Single Malt, and that makes this a little harder to justify. If this were a $30 bottle it would be a no brainer to always have this on the shelf.
  • The subtle flavors are hidden by the opening alcohol burn when your sipping it straight.

WHISKEY DREAMS – Don Julio 1942

When I was much younger I used to enjoy drinking Tequila. I had a friend from Mexico and when his family would come up to visit they would bring local tequila in milk jugs. The distillery (I wish I could remember which one) would let them fill a jug for a dollar (30 pesos back then I think).

It was the finest tequila I’ve ever had.

Don Julio 1942 was very close to that.

It was smooth, so very smooth with a lovely vanilla mixed with agave.

Why did I have a bottle of Don Julio 1942? One of my son’s desperately needed a haircut, so he came over so I could cut his hair – which then turned into a board game night, which turned into us all getting drunk.

While there is some liquid left in this picture, it was gone shortly after.

I’ve become a bourbon and Irish Whiskey aficionado, but this tequila was delightful and well worth a sip, especially if someone else is paying for it, which earned it 80 out of 100 points.

Don Julio 1942

Pros

  • Amazingly smooth and rich.
  • Vanilla and agave in perfect unison.
  • Very sip worthy tequila.

Cons:

  • At $160, that is a very expensive bottle of tequila.

WHISKEY DREAMS – KNAPPOGNUE CASTLE 12 YEAR

This single malt Knappognue Castle 12 Year is finished in bourbon barrels, and was first produced in 1998, at the Cooley Distillery. In 2011, Beam Inc. purchased Cooley for $95,000,000, so someone walked away with just short of 100 million dollars. In my area, this Knappognue Castle 12 Year costs approximately $50, but prices vary every time I shop, so there could be big differences between my price and what you see at your local whiskey/bourbon reseller.

The nose is pleasantly filled with sweet vanilla and butter cookies.

The palate is sweet vanilla and spice that ends with a bit of pepper from the time the whiskey spent in the bourbon barrels.

I can’t help but compare this to Tyrconnel’s Single Malt. Tyrconnel doesn’t have an age statement, but they are within $5 of each other, and I honestly found the Tyrconnel and this Knappognue Castle 12 Years to be quite similar. I think I need to buy another bottle of each and do a blind tasting, because my memory is blurring the two together. Which means that this and Tyrconnel’s Single Malt are tied with an 87/100.

I may go back and update both the Tyrconnel’s Single Malt and this score, because I think a head to head is worth it for a tie breaker in the future.

Knappogue Castle 12 Year – Empty Bottle

Pros

  • Intoxicating vanilla and spice.
  • I love the buttery cookies this brings out on the tongue.

Cons:

  • The time spent in the bourbon barrels seems to have left a bit of pepper on the aftertaste that takes away from the rest of the experience.

WHISKEY DREAMS – TYRCONNEL SINGLE MALT

This Tyrconnel Single Malt is distilled at the Kilbeggan distillery. This single malt is named after a horse, named of course Tyrconnel, who came from behind to win the National Produce Stakes horse race, or that is at least the lore that surrounds the whiskey. While this was intended as a single release, it was so popular they couldn’t stop producing it. (I wasn’t there in 1876, so I’m pretty much going by what the distillery is saying here.)

Tyrconnel is a mild gold color and the nose is sweet, light, and filled with vanilla and spice. The nose is very pleasing.

The mouth feel is light, and trails off just a tiny big from the nose. If the taste stood up to the nose this would be a contender against Redbreast. The taste is bursting with vanilla sweetness and buttery cookies, calls for your mouth to take the next sip even as the first is being swallowed, which is where this single malt gets dinged a few points. Tyrconnel has a mild, but noticeable aftertaste that turns that lovely spice into something just a bit stringent. Not unpleasant, but not endearing either.

Still, this is a quality sipper, and scores a very respectable 87/100. I plan on replacing the bottle I finished this week while travelling. One of the advantages of being on holiday is you can drink every day if you want.

Pros

  • All sweet butter cookies and vanilla.
  • Satisfies a craving for Redbreast as $25 to $30 cheaper per bottle.
  • Once you open the bottle each dram call to you to drink another.

Cons:

  • Mild, but noticeable aftertaste.
  • Once you open the bottle each dram call to you to drink another.

WHISKEY DREAMS – KilBeggan Traditional irish Whiskey

If you hadn’t noticed, I’m on an Irish Whiskey kick. So I ordered three bottles I’ve never had before, and the first one I choose was this Kilbeggan. I’d describe this as the budget Irish Whiskey.

I know that some of you might consider this to be subtle, but I thoroughly enjoyed this bottle of Kilbeggan Traditional Irish Whiskey, so much that I just ordered a bottle of Kilbeggan Single Grain Irish Whiskey to see what $10 does.

The nose is sweet and reminds me of echos of Redbreast. Its like a fourth or fifth cousin, close enough to remind you of the resemblance, but clearly not a first order sibling.

The mouth feel is thin, sweet, and maybe except for that very first sip which has a bit of the burn from the oak tannins from the time the whiskey spent in the barrel. After that its all sweet and vanilla mixed with spice malt.

This Kilbeggan Traditional Irish Whiskey punches way above its price. For gatherings, tastings with friends who don’t know if they love whiskey, or any time where value is important, this is just a great choice. It is sippable, sweet and subtle, and earned an 84/100 for being such a great Irish Whiskey.

I plan on keeping a bottle of Kilbeggan on the shelf from now on. At this price point I don’t have to feel guilty about enjoying an extra dram now and then – or feel like I have to ration it because of how much it cost.

Pros

  • The price to quality can’t be beat here.
  • Kilbeggan is not Redbreast, but since I can buy 3.5 bottles of Kilbeggan for the price, that gives it a lot of value points.
  • The nose is sweet and gentle.
  • Sweet, vanilla, and spice all mixed together in malty goodness.
  • Subtle, perfect for those times you don’t want super strong flavors.

Cons:

  • The flavors are mild and fade on the tongue.
  • The oak from the barrel on that first sip is just a bit stringent? Is that the right word? Maybe its a bit burny? Is that a word? (Yes, I’m writing this 3 drams in.)
