WHISKEY PLACES – Restaurante Montserrat Manor

My wife and I gave our children a trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic to our kids as our holiday gift and on our last night we went to the Montserrat Manor for a nice dinner.

The food was okay but not worth the price. I asked for a whiskey menu and they basically told me they had what I would consider local bar quality whiskey, so I went with my standard Manhattan.

How was it?

Honestly, I’ve had better at Applebee’s.

Given how expensive the food was and not only the poor quality whiskey selection, and even worse Manhattan, I’ve got to give Montserrat Manor a 35/100, making it Just Bad. Sure, I should have ordered a Rum drink, but by the last day I’d drank so much Rum I just wanted a sip of whiskey for God’s sake.

WHISKEY PLACES – The Dead Rabbit

The Dead Rabbit is a famous cocktail bar in New York and I was lucky enough to go there with my coworkers. We booked a table upstairs which means a bit more space – and this place gets busy so that is good – and then started to drink.

I tried two of their signature drinks, of which there are many, but I have to be honest when I say I didn’t enjoy them as much as I did when I switched over to Redbreast 12. They were interesting, but they were honestly just a bit too sweet and a bit too funky for me.

I may be too old for The Dead Rabbit, or maybe just too much of a whiskey snob. After the first two mixed drinks I changed over to neat Irish Whiskey before ending the night with Red Breast 12, which you can never go wrong with.

I had fun and enjoyed the huge selection of Irish Whiskey. So why did The Dead Rabbit score a 75/100? The fact that the mixed drinks were a bit too funky for me cost them points, as well as the cost. I know this is in Manhattan but I’m a country boy and the prices seemed astronomical to me.

Harry’s Savoy Grill is one of our favorite restaurants for special occasions. The prime rib is my usual, and I’ve never had a bad meal there. It is expensive, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

It was recently my father’s and my wife’s birthdays, so we celebrated at Harrys. The food as always was amazing, and is clearly the primary reason to go to Harry’s.

On the Whiskey front, they have a standard bar with standard quality. I started with Harry’s Manhattan, and it was well, a Manhattan. Nothing special about it. It was good, it just didn’t have any sparkle or pizazz.

If you are looking for good food and have deep pockets, you can’t beat Harry’s. If you are looking for a Whiskey Bar with lots of choices, there are better options. Harry’s is earning itself a 67/100.

We hit up the Iron Hill Brewery for lunch before seeing the new Batman movie yesterday. We were seated in one of the long wooden booths as we were a party of five, and the only reason I comment on it is that the table and seats were so tight as to be just barely comfortable. My son and his girlfriend are each like 100lbs, and they sat on on side while the bigger adults sat on the other. Even with the table against their chests, the adults just barely squeezed it. So if you are a bigger person, don’t get a booth.

I had the Baja Fish Tacos, which are my favorite.

The fix is light and the coating nice and crispy, while the slaw and other toppings just blend so well together.

For my libation I selected the Kentucky Connection.

It is made from Maker’s Mark, Amaretto, and expressed orange peel. Is it technically a Manhattan? I’m not sure, but I’m going to consider it a Manhattan for the purposes of this review.

The Kentucky Connection itself doesn’t look like much. It is ice, the drink, and two mixing straws. It doesn’t even have the orange peel as a garnish, so not overly visually appealing.

On the flip side the drink is tasty. I normally consider Maker’s Mark to be an easy to get, but moderate quality bourbon, so I was skeptical about how this Kentucky Connection would fare and I was pleasantly surprised. It is a tad sweet, but it sips very smoothly and ends with a nice orange finish.

I might just have to get get me a bottle of Maker’s Mark and some Amaretto to see if I can reproduce this.

This Kentucky Connection scores an 71/100, making it very Sip Worthy. What cost Iron Hill some points?

Overall there is not a huge selection of bourbons at Iron Hill Brewery, which kind of makes sense as they focus on beer.
It can get pricey very quickly.
Some of the booths are oddly tight. Like my son and his girlfriend are under a hundred pounds each, and they could barely squeeze into the one edge of the booth. (Maybe it was just that booth?)
The roofing on the first floor is metal and it gets so loud you can’t have a conversation if you are inside.

Overall, the Kentucky Connection is worth the trip, and I absolutely love their Baja Fish Tacos but next time we will wait for a warmer day and eat outside so we can hear each talk.

A coworker and myself were super excited to hit roanoke after a long day of travelling to get to Chi town and headed over after checking into our hotels.

We started with the cheese plate and then I had the Steak Frites and my coworker had the Sea Bass. She really liked the Sea Bass but my Steak Frites was way overpriced for the quality and size of the cut.

Of course I had a Manhattan, or in this case a Black Manhattan with my meal:

I’m honestly not a huge fan of Woodford Reserve, and that preference shines through when I give roanoke a 55/100 as an overall score. The primary drivers for that score are poor choice of whiskey’s overall, and an average at best Black Manhattan combined with expensive food that didn’t really warrant the price. For two people the meal came out to $200 bucks, and that is just not in sync with the quality and value we received.

My wife and I had lunch at Ted’s Montana Grill. She had the Snowcrest Sandwhich and I had a burger with fries and onion rings. My wife had a beer and I had two of the “Newly Fashioned” cocktails.

The nose on the Newly Fashioned is all sweet and orange with just a hint of bourbon underneath it. Even my wife, who does not like whiskey found the nose to be quite enjoyable.

The sip is all sweet and citrus and really hides the alcohol. My wife did take a sip, but she said the bourbon was stiller there for her, or at least the alcohol. For me this was a bit too sweet and that sweetness overpowered the bourbon. If you are just getting into bourbon, or like sweet drinks you are going to love this Newly Fashioned.

Ted’s Montana Grill scored a 66/100, making it Sip Worthy. Two things cost Ted’s some points. The first is the cocktail menu and available bourbons is a pretty short list. The second is that it was fairly pricey, with a price tag of $90 for a lunch for two people. The food was good, but not $90 for two people lunch good. Yes, I had two drinks, and my wife had a beer, but between two sandwiches and an appetizer we both walked away saying it was a bit too expensive for what we got.

My wife and I used to hit this TGI Fridays on a monthly basis as we both worked nearby and would hit it up for lunch together when we could.

My suggestion, get the Whiskey-Glazed Sesame Chicken Strips. These are the reason I go to TGI Fridays and they really do make it worth the visit.

However, we are here to talk about whiskey, and TGI Fridays is just not a place to go if you are looking for whiskey selection. The cocktail menu is just very limited:

Our server was incredibly nice and helpful, but when I asked what the whiskey’s they had I couldn’t help but chuckle internally when she said they had Jameson, Maker’s Mark, and Straight Kentucky, which is just the descriptor on their menu for Maker’s.

So of course I went with a Maker’s Mark Manhattan. As our waitress delivered the drink she apologized and send the bartender was new, so your experience with TGI Fridays may be different…

What I got was a watered down glass Maker’s Mark. I don’t think there was any vermouth in it at all.

I told the waitress no worries, everyone has to start somewhere, and drank the drink – but did not order another, and yes, I still left a nice tip.

The Whiskey-Glazed Sesame Chicken Strips are the reason to go to TGI Fridays for me, but when ranking it as a Whiskey Place I have to give it a 1/100, setting a new record low for Just Bad Whiskey Places.

Whenever we are near another I’ll have to try another and will update this review if anything changes on the Whiskey Place Front.

It was freezing cold when I was in Chicago the first week of Chicago, and when I say freezing cold, I mean freezing cold. My coworkers and I were not actually planning on going to the Blue Line Lounge & Bar, but we were freezing and it was along our route to whatever bar we were supposed to be going to.

I ordered a Manhattan, because I usually do, and it wasn’t until I tasted it that I thought I recognized it. After looking in the menu, I realized they were using Redemption Bourbon, which scored a 40/100 as a sipper. When I made a At Home Manhattan, the Vermouth definitely helped smooth out some of the rough edges, and the score rose to a 53/100.

I’m going to say that the Blue Line Lounge and Bar Manhattan tasted about the same as what I made, so I’m holding to that score of a 53/100, making it just barely Sip Worthy. As a whiskey bar, this place doesn’t have a huge selection, and is about as good as any city bar.

WHISKEY PLACES – Peddler’s Village Cock N’ Bull

We made our annual trip to Peddler’s Village and had dinner at the Cock’n Bull Restaurant. My wife and I always enjoy heading out to Lahaska, but this was our first visit since Covid-19.

Our server was amazing, and she was running like mad to deal with a lot of tables, so keep in mind that the Cock’n Bull seemed short staffed and they were really busy.

I had two drinks with dinner. The first was a Manhattan, which is my usual go to drink.

Based on the menu, the Cock’n Bull Manhattan is Rittenhouse Rye, Carpano Antica, and an amorosa cherry.

Sadly, this Manhattan tasted like bourbon with ice. There was no real flavor, which is actually the reason I moved on to order an Old Fashioned as drink two.

Do you notice anything about this Old Fashioned? It is almost clear. How did it taste? Well, like sugar water with a twist of orange in it. If there was bourbon in this Old Fashioned it was just a tiny splash.

I’m giving the Cock’n Bull a 26/100, and that is mostly a courtesy as I have had a few good meals here, and they are getting bonus points for being open during Covid-19. Being as expensive as it is, I expect high quality meals and drinks from a restaurant like this.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a dinner at the Tortoise Supper Club to celebrate the holidays. On the food side I ordered the Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes and it was absolutely the best meatloaf I’ve ever had. It was freezing cold this week in Chicago, and it was the perfect comfort food to warm me up, and to pair with a a drink.

They have a decent menu of bourbon, Scotch, and Irish Whiskey, so deciding on what I actually wanted to drink was not easy. One of bosses ordered a Manhattan, and that sealed the deal for me.

With my decision made, I ordered a Manhattan, which has become my go to when dining out.

My Manhattan was made with Bulleit Rye and a decent shake of bitters. It was wonderfully dry, woody, and the swallow ended with a nice dry bitter finish. There was sweet vermouth in it, but it was very mellow and really let the Bulleit Rye shine through. I’m not a huge fan of Rye, and this still scored an 85/100, so if you are a Rye lover, this will likely score even higher for you.

If your in Chicago, and have deep pockets, I highly recommend the Tortoise Supper Club. It is all dark wood, class, and live music, at least while I was there. They had two lovely young woman walking around and singing Christmas carols and it was wonderful.
