So I touched the Hogue forend for the Remington 870 and really liked the way it gave just a little before your fingers bit into it. So I bought one and put it onto my tactical 870.
I immediately realized I had to cut a notch in it so that my side saddle wouldn’t obstruct its range of motion and things were good for a little while. If you look at the image below you can see that the stock 870 forend is actually a bit shorter than the Hogue forend. That L notch is actually what I cut away to give it clearance around my side saddle.
So I thought all was well. But every now and then I’d pump and there would be a hitch and things would bind up. What I realized is that the Hogue has just a bit too much play in it. No matter how much I tightened the forend nut I could never quite get rid of all the movement. And when I twisted it too much I’d lock up the slide just enough to restrict its full range of motion.
(Sorry for poor quality. This was actually not the video I wanted to post but my cameraman on my 2nd take forgot to hit record and I didn’t realize it until I’d already finished the swap.)
So back on went the stock forend and all should be well.
