2020 RANGE DAY 7

Today was a big range day for lots of reasons.

The first is that I finally got to shoot my new CZ P10-C. I finished my FFL paperwork and picked it up the other day, but today was the first day I got to go to the range.

CZ P10-C Unboxing

I read a lot of reviews and my final decision came down to three guns. The Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield, Springfield XD Service, and the CZ P10-C. Why isn’t the Glock 19 on the list? I have to be honest, I’m not a huge Glock fan, and the only reason I own a G23 is because I bought it from a buddy going through a divorce. I never say never, but its likely to be the only Glock I own.

The runner up was the Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield. I’ve got two different buddies who own this and I’ve gotten to shoot about a hundred rounds in total through two different examples. It fit my hand well, was honestly a little cheaper than what I got the CZ P10-C for, but it also felt just a little bit less solid. It was close, but the parts on the Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield feel just a little looser, a little less solid. It was my runner up, and the honest truth is that I will likely end up buying one in the future.

Third place went to the Springfield XD Service. I didn’t get to shoot this gun, but I did get to hold it and rack the slide. It didn’t fit my hand that well and some of the reviews I read made me questions its long term reliability.

That is how I became the owner of this beautiful CZ P10-C.

CZ P10-C

The weapon comes with two clips, and yes, I already bought a few spare mags. I have to be honest, I love this gun, but I also have the same issue that many others have complained about. The slide release is amazingly tight. I can release it if I use a lot of force. It’s much easier just to pull back on the slide to release it.

I put half a case of 9mm through the gun today, which did help loosen it ever so slightly, but I will likely be buying the Apex Extended Slide Release, I just need to find one in stock. I’m pretty sure it will continue to loosen, but I like the larger lever the Apex provides in any case.

1000 9mm Rounds

Should that turn you off the CZ P10-C? Sure, it’s a little annoying to need to put a few hundred rounds or buy an upgrade to make it work 100%, but that is offset by the rest of the gun. This thing is just a tack driver.

Someone left a pin on the target post, so I put it on top.

Push Pin Target

I hit it in about five rounds. The interesting part is that when you look at the top of the two by four, you can see where the round scored the wood.

Bullet Track

My son thought it was a fluke. He shut up after I did the same thing two more times. Then we ran out of push pins. No, I’m not a naturally gifted shooter, but I do target shoot whenever I can, and practice and time with the same gun in your hand makes all the difference.

Long story short, yes, I really am pleased with my purchase.

What does a few clips through a single target look like?

6 Inch Target After 100 Rounds

When the other stalls are full, you kind of have to wait for everyone to need to hang targets. I also like to put the 1cm orange targets in random places and clear them. My best was 2 out of 3 with a single clip with my CZ P10-C. I hope that tell you what a straight shooter thing was.

On a side note, my son also had an amazing day. Today was his first day shooting the Smith & Wesson M586.

Ry’s First Shot with the M586

For the record, this is my son who’s had over a hundred eye surgeries, and yes, when the Zombie Apocalypse starts, he’s my right hand man. This was his first six round cylinder after a target change.

The second exciting thing for the day was that we took one of our family friends to the range for the first time. She had wanted to try to shoot after a bad experience in the past. The first time she went to shoot someone handed her a larger caliber gun. She doesn’t know what it was. She just knew that when she shot it, it hurt her hand, wrist, and was crying. That is not how you introduce someone to shooting if you want them to continue and enjoy the sport.

I put one round in the M&P22 and slowly let her get comfortable until she was loading a full clip and enjoying the experience. For a first time shooter, she did awesome. She was hitting the target, and having fun.

05/09/2015150My youngest was funny when he was shooting this . I don't really feel the difference between the .40 and the 9mm, but he said he can really tell the difference.

Recommended Shooting Gear:

Remember, if you use GunBroker, or live in South Jersey, stay away from County Sports in Carney’s Point NJ. They have horrible customer service and will screw you over to make an extra $5 bucks. How do I know, because that’s what they did to me.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 13, Doctor of the Dead

Docter of the Dead fills in a lot of backstory. Team Murphy is rerouted to a lab in Colorado by Citizen Z where they find a lab overrun by zombies. Murphy’s special abilities are on full display as he shields the team from being eaten, walking them into the lab.

Surrounded by Zombies

As Team Murphy is exploring, we also see flashbacks to pre apocalypse days, when Dr. Walter Kurian is taking samples of peoples brain fluids, while they are still alive.

In order to explore the Colorado lab, Team Murphy has to go through decontamination before they can continue deeper into the lab. This is when we see an awesome shot of Doc’s farmer tan.

Doc’s Tan

Or it dirt? I’m going to be charitable and say its his tan.

Once deep inside the Colorado plant, the team finds Patient 0, just before Dr. Kurian shows up with a few solders.

Citizen Z realizes that Dr. Kurian isn’t exactly who he says he is, but it’s too late for Team Murphy, they are already in trouble. Team Murphy is only saved from disaster by Murphy’s parting gift to Cassandra. Or at least, saved from getting shot.

Murphy has a panic attack, fleeing everything, and in the process triggering the security fail safe protocols of the lab. Apparently the powers that used to be fully understood what was inside, because when the lab’s security protocols are triggered, multiple nukes are launched.

Nukes In Flight

Thus ends Season 1 of Z Nation. It appears nukes are about to fall on Team Murphy as well as Citizen Z. Docter of the Dead was a strong ending to the first season, and scored a 91/100, making it Worth Your Time.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 12, Murphy’s Law

Murphy’s Law finds Team Murphy forced off the road by a traffic jam, which leads them to a defunct golf course crawling with zombies.

Post Apocalyptic Traffic Jam

Things don’t go well for the team once they at the golf course. There are too many zombies rushing them, and not enough bullets left in their guns. The Team gets split up and Murphy gets left out in the mix while Warren and the other “normals” take shelter in a bathroom.

Things are looking good for the team, but lucky for them, another group of survivors rolls in, and they are well armed and clear out the clubhouse, saving the day. At least for a few minutes. The group of newcomers saw Murphy in the midst of the undead, and they realize he’s something special, and they want him.

A few drinks and roofies later and the newcomers steal away with murphy. leaving everyone else handcuffed to a zombie.

Cuffed to a Zombie

While the newcomers explain their plan to Murphy, the team is escaping from their cuffs. The plan is simple. The newcomers want Murphy to stroll through a pharmaceutical plant and get them oxy, because in the post apocalyptic world, oxy is money.

Citizen Z helps the team track Murphy once they escape their cuffs, while Murphy makes it into the plant.

Things go a little crazy at the end, and a major new Murphy Power is revealed. Thankfully, Team Murphy is united, kicks some butt, and gets ready for the season finale.

Murphy’s Law scored an 80/100 and is Worth Your Time. The Best Zombie Kill for this episode is clear, Warren is a zombie killing machine.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 11, Sisters of Mercy

Sisters of Mercy is another classic episode of Z Nation. Team Murphy is whole again, at least for a little while. Addy and Mack stumble upon the rest of the group in what looks like the bowels of an industrial complex.

The team finds a ride and starts heading west again. Once on the open read, they encounter a zombie child.

Zombie Child

Shortly after, they encounter a very similar young man, this time alive. He tells Warren he’s walking to the city to meet his dad. Warren tries to talk him out of it, but the only thing that gets him to get in the truck is the promise of a ride into the city, if he’ll help them find some food.

The kid leads Team Murphy back to the Sisters of Mercy, which is where we find out just how f*cked up surviving the Zombie Apocalypses can be. There are no men allowed inside the compound, and Warren, Addy, and Cassandra quickly find out that the kids walking to Salt Lake City are basically being put out to die. No male older than 13 is allowed to stay.

One of the bits of awesomeness from this episode is the Zombie Bear of punishment. You don’t want to be punished by the Sisters of Mercy.

Sisters of Mercy ends with a little bit of a shock, as Team Murphy loses one of their number to the sisters, but this was a great episode that scored a 82/100, making it Worth Your Time.

Bad Gun Handling – Glock Croc

Yes, I know its a Smith & Wesson, but that doesn’t rhyme does it?

In any case, never use anything as a holster that wasn’t designed to be a holster. This is how you lose a toe or shoot someone else by accident when you go to pull the gun free.

Be careful, be safe, and always wear eyes and ears when shooting.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 10, Going Nuclear

Going Nuclear gets back to what Z Nation cores strengths are. There are zombies, fun character development, and the survivors need to solve a problem to survive.

Going Nuclear, as the name implies, revolves around Team Murphy stumbling on a power plant that is about to go boom. Time is short, and there isn’t enough fuel to get everyone out of the blast zone.

The only way to survive is to stop the power plant from Going Nuclear. This turns out to be a kick in the nards for 10K, as he’s forced to relive the difficult memory of giving mercy to his father after he turned.

Radioactive Zombies

Thanks to the selfless sacrifice of the plants manager and original designer, Team Murphy helps save the day, but there is a high cost to be paid by the locals. Going Nuclear scored a 79/100, making it Worth Your Time.

We have two zombie kills as candidates for Best Zombie Kill. Ammunition is running short, and that means its time to break out the class tools of war, the hoe, and the machete. You know, classic weapons. Let me know in the comments which kill you think should win.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 9, Die Zombie Die… Again

Die Zombie Die… Again focuses on Mack and Addy. Addy is struggling, and Mack just wants to make things better, but some things you can’t fix.

Things turn freaky fast.

Addy and Mack are stuck in a loop, killed bay a large, angry zombie, over and over.

Who was stuck? You’re lead to believe it’s Mack, but then Addy is the one with the major revelation at the end of the episode.

I have to be honest, I hate the psychological episodes. A brief flashback/dream sequence is fine, but when it goes on so long you can’t tell what’s real or not, that is just too much.

For me, Die Zombie Die… Again was Just Bad and scored a 29/100.

ZOMBIE SERIES – THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND, SEASON 1, EPISODE 4, The Wrong End of a Telescope

The Wrong End of a Telescope is the fourth episode of the season. I’m hoping its a strong episode, because the last two have been in Rainy Day territory, and I have to be honest, I expect more from anything that carries The Walking Dead name.

The Wrong End of a Telescope picks up on the far side of the Blaze of Glory. Team Iris/Hope is on the march, trying to figure out where their father is.

The Group On The March

They know he’s in New York State, just not where, and unfortunately for them, New York State is a big piece of land.

To be exact, there are 54,556 square miles to cover. That is a lot of ground for a few kids and two adults.

The Team holes up in an abandoned high school. Because what building has lots of rooms for zombies to hide in and might have been used to house refugee who then were turned? Aren’t high school gyms full of cots during natural disasters?

The Team Enters The High School

So far we are ten minutes into the episode, and haven’t seen a single Empty yet. What does the team do? They decide to split up to explore, but at least they are pairing up. Still, separating the group in unknown territory seems like a bad idea.

I hope I’m not being too critical, but the atmosphere is still off. The survivors don’t seem to have any anxiety.

We are not fifteen minutes in, still haven’t seen a zombie. The people who produced this know the show has “The Walking Dead” in the title right?

Okay, we are now at the eighteen minute mark, and we finally see a zombie!!! And maybe something worse than a zombie, because whatever was crawling out of the room just got pulled back in. I’m guessing that whatever eats zombies, is likely dangerous to the survivors as well? Right?

Finally, there is a little bit of apprehension building. The survivors are in the high school, and something is in there with them. Which would be awesome, but the episode immediately cuts to a long cut scene of Hope and her dad.

There is too much backstory!!! We don’t need to know every characters life story in the first few episodes.

Felix and Elton have found what appears to be a killing room for Empties, and Felix wants to get out. He doesn’t know who or what is killing the zombies, and it sounds like he doesn’t want to stay around long enough to find out.

Just when things were getting good, and we see a wolf snarling at Huck and Hope, we get forced to watch Irish and Silas practice ballroom dancing. I have nothing against ballroom dancing, but the blending of the last school dance, with them dancing, just ruins the mood. Aren’t I meant to feel like they could get eaten at any moment?

Hope and Huck slip around the angry doggy while Felix and Elton decide to go into the basement to get back to the gym where Iris and Silas are. At least Hope and Huck find some supplies, even if they had to killer an Empty to get them.

There are only fifteen minutes left, but things are finally picking up. Something is in the vents, and when it starts to grown I actually had a small jump scare.

Iris and Silas are in the gym basement, where apparently a lot of zombies were put in lockers? Lucky for Silas and Iris, they happen to end up just on the other side of the door where Huck and Hope are. This is right about where Silas looses it, and decides its better to beat a zombie to death with his bare hands than use his big freaking wrench.

The team is now reunited, just in time to see Silas lose his sh*t. We still don’t know exactly what he did, but the narrator did say even his mother testified against him, so it must have been bad.

While the main group is getting ready to get back on the road, Felix and Huck are working over Elton, trying to get him to join there “Go Back” movement.

The episode had a slow start but picked up as it went on. I’m giving The Wrong End of a Telescope a 71/100, and hoping next weeks episode is even better.

2020 RANGE DAY 6

I finally got to go back to the range yesterday to enjoy my new S&W M586, and it is just a pleasure to shoot. I picked up a box of .38 wadcutters, because I can’t find normal ammo at the moment.

1000 wadcutter rounds.

This is the first time I’ve shot wadcutter, which is designed to punch a nice neat circle in a paper target, to make scoring easier.

.38 Wadcutter Vs. Target Ammo

It takes a little more to load my wheel guns with wadcutters compared to target rounds, at least at first. Target rounds have that cone at the front which kind of helps guide them in. Not a huge issue, but loading takes a split second longer.

I like to alternate between semi auto and wheel guns. Switching up makes me adjust to each weapon, making it harder to just “dial in” with one weapon due to repetition.

Glock23, S&W M586

I put 300 rounds through my S&W M586, and had some truly awesome shows. I started in the short, 5 yard lane, and finished on the fifteen yard lane.

This was my target after the first couple reloads.

5 Yard

This was my target after a lot more rounds. yes, I am pulling to the left a little, but that’s why I’m at the range, to get better.

5 Yard Target After a Few more Reloads

I like to use the little reactive circle stickers to give me a small target. I put one on this target post and was surprised that a .40 caliber round went through a two by four. The picture on the right is the entrance, and you can kind of see how it blew out the side of the lumbar, while the right side is the exit. I have no way of knowing how much energy the round had after punching through the two by four, but it sure makes you think. At close range, even if the round hits the framing spot on, it might not be enough to stop the round.

.40 caliber going through a two by four

At the end I moved to the 15 yard lane and finished up with my last few reloads.

I took my time and shot mostly the S&W 586 in single action, but it was worth it to see the results.

15 Yards, S&W M586
15 Yards, S&W M586, Glock 23, S&W MP22

It is always a good day when I get to the range. Once the weather gets a little colder I’m looking forward to walking the clay course. It is open now, but it just seems wrong to do it when the weather’s warm.

And of course, the last thing is always clean up. I use a colander to shake all the sand and dirt off the brass before I throw it in a bucket so a buddy can reload it later.

11/21/2020100This M586 is a nail driver. If I need to put a shot in s small target I'm grabbing this gun.
10/31/2020200My son and I both love this wheel gun. We traded it back and forth all day.
10/24/2020300This is just an amazing wheel gun. It is worth every penny I paid for it.
09/06/2020100My first outing with my new S&W M586.

Glock Model 23 Shooting Log

8/14/202150Still not sure if I like this Glock. It doesn't point naturally and it always takes two clips to get on target.
11/21/202050The Glock 23 is a great little semi auto that is slowly growing on me.
10/31/2020100My son and I took turns with the Glock 23 today. He really liked the Glock, so I might need to do a paternity test.
10/24/2020100I'm not a huge Glock fan, but this G23 is slowly growing on me.
09/06/2020100Spent a little bit of time at the range on this beautiful Labor Day Weekend.
7/6/2020100Had the range all to myself!!!
6/27/2020100After figuring out how to sight with this it was fun to shoot.
10/07/201650The thing I'm starting to love about this Glock is how clean it shoots - and how easy it is to clean - because it doesn't seem to get that dirty.
09/04/201550Just a quick outing to start off our weekend.
05/09/2015150My youngest was funny when he was shooting this . I don't really feel the difference between the .40 and the 9mm, but he said he can really tell the difference.
04/26/2015100My buddy is going through a divorce and needed some cash. So I got a very nice gun that had barely any rounds down the barrel for half the retail price.

Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Shooting Log

11/21/2020100The M&P 22 is just a joy to shoot, which is why it gets fed on a frequent basis.
10/31/2020200Our family friend really enjoyed the manageable kick the 22LR has. My son liked how he could group hits in rapid fire mode.
10/24/2020100After shooting the 40 Caliber G23, this feels like a toy, but it is fun to shoot.
09/06/2020100More bulls eyes with my .22 nail driver.
7/12/2020320Relaxing day at the range with my youngest son.
6/27/2020100Cheap, fun shooting.
6/14/2020100First outing of 2020.
10/07/2016250It's been a while since the .22 came out of the safe. What more could you want than cheap and fun shooting.

Remember, if you use GunBroker, or live in South Jersey, stay away from County Sports in Carney’s Point NJ. They have horrible customer service and will screw you over to make an extra $5 bucks. How do I know, because that’s what they did to me.
