Bridge of the Doomed (2022)

Bridge of the Doomed kicks off with soldiers being attacked by the Undead. After some initial carnage the major plot is revealed. A group of soldiers is sent to hold a bridge. The soldiers need to hold it so the rest of the army can use it to retake the ground once things stabilize.

The movie appears to be a low budget offering. There are lots of soldiers and lots of brand new uniforms. It looks like the directors raided an army surplus store and didn’t bother to make any of the clothing look like it had been worn before.

Bridge of the Doomed is at the lower end of the Rainy Day Movie scale and scores 44/100.

There are so many reasons why. The first is the really bad acting. Both the dialogue and the acting is C- at best. There are also a lot of very unfit, heavyset soldiers. How did the fat guys pass the Army Physical Fitness Test?

The other item that cost the movie major points was how slow the middle was. It started off with a little bit of action and then went into plot mode. When the plot isn’t so good, that doesn’t help much.

Low budget movies are great sometimes. They just need to be true to the genre. This could have been a much better movie, even with its low budget. It just needed more Zombies, and not to have so many stretches in the middle without any Zombies at all.

Then there is the swamp monster living in the cave. Come on, I signed up for a Zombie Movie!

Virus:32 follows a well trodden path, with a small twist. A virus is flooding the streets of Montevideo with fast, violent Zombies. The twist? After they attack the Zombies need 32 seconds to recover their stamina.

Virus:32 has two main characters. The mother, Iris, is played by Paula Silva, and the tween daughter, Tata, is played by Pilar Garcia Ayala. On the day the outbreak begins, Iris brings Tata to work, which is apparently watching over an abandoned school. She might be a security guard, but not one who is supplied a firearm.

Iris sees her first signs that something isn’t right around the 17 minute mark when she looks out a window to see one man beating another violently. Her response is perfect, as she calls the police to report it, instead of going to investigate it herself.

Virus:32 has excellent cinematography. It has a minimalistic style that often enhances the movie. One of my favorite moments is when the camera pans to the security monitors and we see someone enter the school.

Its just after this, at around the 21:30 mark that things start to get good. The Zombies are in the building, and Iris has a mission. She has to get to her daughter, and then save both them if she can.

Scoring

Virus:32 has excellent production values. The whole 32 second delay, which is a core of the movie is shown to us, instead of being told to us, which earned it points in my book.

Overall, the movie earned a 62/100, making it a perfect Rainy Day Movie. The main drivers are how much the movie feels like a mix up of some truly great movies. It has a bit of 28 Day Later, then Dawn of the Dead (2004) as the middle of the movie really focuses on the whole Zombie Momma and baby. The ending was okay, but felt like it tried to hard to get an emotional rise out of me.

Zombie Movies – The Video Dead (1987)

The Video Dead is what I’d call a classic Zombie Movie. Anything over 30 years old qualifies in my book.

The Video Dead

What should you expect from a 30 year old Zombie movie? Don’t expect state of the art CGI or a lot of special effects. The late 80s were a time when special effects cost big dollars, and Zombie movies relied mostly on practical effects.

Having said that, they did spend some bucks on what I’d call the Weird Science lightening effect. Who knows, maybe someone on the team actually worked on Weird Science, it did come out two years before The Video Dead was released.

Amazing CGI

The Video Dead tells a story about a television that allows Zombies to escape from it, as well as having the ability to haunt anyone who is watching it. The movie opens with delivery guys bringing the television to a house, and then shortly returning to find the owner of the house murdered in gruesome fashion. We then jump forward in time to a brother and sister who move in, not knowing they just made “The Murder House” their new home.

It’s not long before the television makes itself present felt, taunting Jeff, the younger brother with lustful messages.

Creepy TV

Jeff writes off the strange events, blaming the weed he was smoking for his crazy thoughts.

When a neighborhood young lady comes by with the dog she’s watching, Jeff temporarily finds a new target for his attentions, but in the process, the dog gets loose, leading to one of the funniest lines in the movie:

It is not long before the last owner of the television shows up. His guilt driving him to try and help. He knew what the television could do, and tries to help the best he can.

The story was relatively straight forward and stayed true to itself. There is a nice little twist at the end. It’s not ground breaking, but I thought it was a suitable ending and I don’t want to give the end away as I do think The Video Dead should be put on your list as a Rainy Day Movie. The Video Dead scored a 65/100, putting it at the top of that Rainy Day Movie category.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – The End? (2017)

The End? is an Italian language Zombie Horror film with a straight forward premise:

Claudio Verona is a young and cynical businessman. One day he gets locked in his office elevator before an important meeting with a client, and this annoying obstacle turns into a nightmare. For outside that metal cage, a deadly virus has begun to infect and transform people into extremely violent and dangerous zombies.

Claudio is a shmuck. The End? makes that very clear in the first fifteen minutes. Claudio is a high powered businessman and an ass. Claudio cheats on his wife. He treats the working class people around him horribly. When Claudio finds himself stuck in an elevator while the Zombie horde rages through the building it does seem like a bit of karma.

The action takes a little while to get going. Thankfully the action starts around the 22:30 minute mark.

Marta Dies

Marta finds Claudio. Claudio is hopefull he might be saved, at least until Marta gets dragged off screen. The Zombies are in the building! This quickly leads to the sub story of Claudio’s wife who is at home as someone bangs at her door.

Claudio then loses his cool. He screams and yells in panic. While I get that Claudio would be scared out of his mind, I don’t get screaming and yelling while there are Zombies trying to eat you just outside the elevator. Maybe try to draw less attention to yourself? Even worse, try not to turn your back on the opening to take a call.

Marta Dies Again

At this point there is a good bit of gore, but there is also still an hour left in the movie and I’m curious how the next sixty minutes are going to play out. I am happy to see Claudio finally learned a lesson when he sees another survivor, and instead of screaming does a bit of whispering instead.

Several other survivors come, go. The zombies make quick work of them before a police officer shows up and gives Claudio some real hope – and a gun.

With a bit of help from his new fellow survivor Claudio eventually makes it out of the elevator. The city has been overrun, but there are still survivors. The ending was good, and avoided one major trope, which gave it points in my book.

The End? Scoring

So how did it do overall? The End? scores a 64/100, putting it at the higher end of the “Rainy Day Movie” scale. What cost it points? The End? didn’t really break any new ground, but the special effects were good and the acting was above par. The movie is in Italian, so it is subtitled, but it is still worth watching.

Aquarium of the Dead (2021)

Aquarium of the Dead has a simple premise:

A scientific accident causes sea creatures in an aquarium to become zombies.

I’m not sure if Aquarium of the Dead was supposed to be tongue in cheek or if it was meant to be taken as a serious Zombie movie. I’m going to interpret it as an attempt at comedy as grading it as a serios Zombie Survival flick would leave it in the red zone.

The concept is simple, if silly. The Aquarium has been told to destroy some veterinary supplies, but of course there is also a nefarious plot and instead of being burnt, those supplies are used and turn the Aquarium’s animals into homicidal creatures. A second key component of the story is that apparently the starved for funds Aquarium is also built like Fort Knox. Once the call for help goes out, it is two comically inept fire department employees who can’t seem to get much done.

My personal favorite parts were the star fish scenes and there is a great gore scene I won’t spoil with a walrus later on. But the star fish scene is so wonderfully horrible I have to share it.

When Zombie Starfish Attack

One of my other favorite, made my laugh scenes was when they played crab baseball. The combination of acting, dialogue, and special effects are just awesome. Somehow it comes together.

My recommendation is to have a few drinks, and save Aquarium of the Dead for a Rainy Day Movie. It was low budget, but some of it was so bad it was good. If that makes any sense. I’m giving Aquarium of the Dead a 32, putting it at the low of the scale for a Rainy Day Movie, mostly because of the overly dramatic dialogue and the low budget special effects.

My last example has to be Clu’s dramatic death scene. This is a perfect example of why Aquarium of the Dead scored a 32/100. She leaps, then is immediately falling? She must have enjoyed as much whiskey as I did watching this to fail so horribly.

Eat Brains Love takes a slightly different view of the classic Zombie movie. It isn’t bites that spread the infection, but instead the Zombie Virus is spread as a sexually transmitted disease.

What happens when the geeky boy and hot girl both catch an STD that makes them want brains? They don’t have a choice. They go on the run together – which leads to fun and antics.

The government has psychics who hunt the infected. This leads to an interesting but strange love triangle between the main characters and one of the agents.

At the same time, there isn’t a lot of depth to Eat Brains Love and they either thought they’d be setting up the end of the movie for a sequel, they just ran out of money, or the writers just didn’t know how to end it. It would have scored much better if the ending had been more well rounded. As it is, the movie scores a 56/100, putting it firmly in Rainy Day Movie territory.

Rise of The Zombies has an all star cast that includes Danny Trejo, Levar Burton, and Mariel Hemingway, so I had high hopes that I had found a gem.

Then I watched the first ten minutes and realized this was a low budget movie. That doesn’t mean bad, and the director did a great job with what money they did have.

The story is fairly straight forward. San Francisco has been overrun, and the survivors flee to Alcatraz. The lead scientists, played by Levar Burton, is searching for a cure. Boy is it weird to see Levar shoot a shotgun. It just feels wrong! Anyway, once Alcatraz is overrun the majority of the survivors flee back to the mainland while Levar stays behind to continue his work.

One of the highlights of the movie is the caesarian birth scene followed by some baby Zombie stomping. I wish I hadn’t been laughing, but that is what happens sometimes.

Rise of the Zombies Scoring

Overall I’m giving Rise of The Zombies a 48/100, making it a solid Rainy Day Movie, which was perfect, because it rained while I was watching it.

What cost Rise of The Zombies points? Sadly, it does feel dated, but the majority of the points get taken off due to the overuse of the “Zombie the team missed” trope, as well as inconsistent rules. How can Zombies climb the Golden Gate Bridge but not a fence? Then there is the overly detailed scientific explanations. It’s a Zombie Movie, we don’t need to go too deep guys.

Amigo Undead is a low budget Undead Demon/Zombie comedy flick. Norm, played by Steve Agee has a plan to mend a few bridges with his adopted little brother. The first step is tricking his brother to come visit his new homestead out in the desert. The second step is just staying alive.

The main characters are Randall Park (Jim from The Office) and Steve Agee as estranged brothers. I was shocked to see Jim from the Office in this low budget Zombie (ish) film to be honest. Instead of putting their differences behind them, the brothers awaken a demon. This forces them to focus on surviving with several comedic results. It is not a barrel of laughs, but there are some funny spots to enjoy.

Sadly, the move spent too much time on the family background. This causes the movie to get off to a slow start. A slow start that never picks up the pace. Eventually, I did laugh a few times, but I’m not sure if I was laughing with the movie, or at it to be honest. I was also drinking, which helped me enjoy it more than I might have otherwise.

If you are drunk (like I was) and take it for a low budget comedy, it is worth the time on a Rainy Day. Amigo Undead scored a 54/100, putting almost dead center in Rainy Day Movie territory.

I consider it a red flag when a movie has its name changed between releases. This movie started out as Cannon Fodder and was later renamed as Battle Of The Undead for the U.S. release. That red flag is big, bright red, and waving energetically.

I have no idea if the original movie was in Hebrew, but I’m hoping some of the dialogue was lost in translation. There are long segments of dialogue that are just horribly insensitive at best, and outright racist at worst.

This was bad…..

But it go so much worse in just a few seconds…

And what the hell was this about?

Which really sucked, because if you took out a lot of the horrible, offensive dialogue, this would have been a decent low budget Zombie movie. The special effects are low budget, but there are lots of Zombies and a good bit of gore, which was actually really well done.

If you can ignore the offensive dialogue this is a Rainy Day Movie, but overall I can’t give it more than a 35/100, putting it at the bottom of the Rainy Day Movie scale because I kept saying WTF while watching it due to the dialogue.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

How could I not be excited to watch Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City? It is a classic series, and surely the writers and directors know what we want as this point right?

Sadly, that logic doesn’t appear to hold water. There is a long, slow build up that takes over 40 minutes for us to get to the good stuff. The reality is that this movie could have started at the 40 minute mark and it would have been better.

So how does it hold up after we’ve invested 40 minutes into it? It does after all have an all star cast. We have Hannah John-Kamen from Killjoys/Game of Thrones and Tom Hopper from The Umbrella Academy. That should give this movie a leg up.

Once the action really gets started it does a good job. It just makes me wonder if the writers and directors really understand what we love about the series though. Why did they waste the first half of the movie with plot and character backstory. None of that is needed. We all know how things work in Raccoon City.

The movie has two major plots. We see a small tactical team get torn to bits at Spencer Mansion while back in the city what is left of the police department is holed up in the precinct. Eventually the storylines meet up, reuniting brother and sister as they attempt to escape Raccoon City.

So how well did they pull off the second half of the movie?

It could have been better. I ‘m giving Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City a 43/100 putting it on the weaker end of the Rainy Day Movie Scale.

Why? The first half of the movie felt like filler, and the writers and directors seemed to have forgotten what makes a good Zombie Movie – mainly lots and lots of Zombies. Is that so hard to remember?
