I have to say this is one of the things that makes me really mad. People hand a firearm to someone who clearly has no firearms experience and let them take a shot, knowing full well they aren’t going to be able to handle what is coming.

And I hope to god they only had one round in that shotgun. Otherwise she might just have managed to get another shot off as the firearm went flying out of her hands.

When I was at Fort Dix in ROTC I remember the guy next to me having a casing get caught between his neck and his shirt. When we finally pulled the brass of his neck it took the skin with it. It was really nasty. The kid was grinding his teeth, trying to to cry out.
At least in this case the brass flew through the air for a second and hopefully cooled off a little.

Does anyone know what the arming device is on these mortar rounds? Is is a mechanical trigger like on the old larger bombs where the blades spin and back off the safety?
Basically, are the odds that these guys were safe even though this looks like it could be catastrophic?
