Fear the Walking Dead, Season 2
Summary:
Date of Death kicks off just the way you would think it would with the hotel flooded by refugees that saw the lights that Madison turned on. It did however have the positive effect of reuniting Travis with them.
After we see a brief glimpse of Madison & Travis reaching for each other through the fence we flash back to Travis in the shed after Chris sho the farmer who shot their friend in the leg. Travis sows the kid up but from the amount of pain he’s in it appears the bullet may not have been a clean through and through – and it instead may have broken the bone. After Travis finishes his first aid work he goes out and buries the farmer without any help.
We then jump between the now and the past. Travis makes it into the hotel but he seems far off and angry when Madison offers him food. When she asks him about Chris he says he “had no choice” I think? Whatever it was, it clearly implies something bad happened.
Which makes perfect sense when we cut back to the past. The leader of the Frat Boys says it is time to move – and James – the wounded friend – looks too scared to say he isn’t ready to be moved – regardless of how much pain he’s in. Is he afraid the Frat Leader will kill him if he’s “dead weight” or is James just afraid of being left behind?
When they lift James into the bed of the truck the kid is clearly in a lot of pain. Travis makes them stop and they end up back at the farm but the Frat Leader wants to keep moving. Travis hears them and comes out, amazed they are willing to just write off their friend. Things turn ugly and guns are drawn.
Travis goes back inside and James tells him the back story about their other friend. This isn’t the first time Team Frat has had to put down one of their own.
The next morning Chris brings Travis some food which gives them a chance to talk. Which also gives Chris the chance to ambush his father. The Frat Leader comes in and shoots his friend before the others pack up the car. While they are getting ready to leave Chris tells his father he’s too weak – Chris thinks he knows how the world has to work now – breaking Travis’s heart in the process.
When we come back Travis & Madison are talking and Travis feels incredibly guilty for letting Chris go. He brushes Madison off, he feels like he failed both his son and his ex-wife.
The episode ends with some ominous people showing up at the front gate of the hotel. Next week is the season finale and I guess we are going to see all the storylines pulled back together with a gasp? A bang? A scream?
Things I loved about this episode…
- Travis burying the farmer all by his self. It said a lot about what kind of person he is as well as all the others – including his son.
- Travis when he’s asked if he wants some chicken – “We should be eating the eggs.” (Not the chickens which they can’t replace.)
Things that I didn’t like about this episode…
- The other refugees outside the hotel simply go away after they let Travis in? I would have thought that would have caused a riot.
- Travis not leaning on Madison. I know he’s upset and feels guilty but come on – that is your wife.
- The let in 40 plus people? Really?
