I have no idea who handed this fellow that shotgun, or exactly what happened here, but from my own experience at the range, I’ve seen people load up guns that look like museum pieces, or guns that have clearly not been well maintained, and I always move over a few stalls because I don’t want to be next to that guy when it blows up.
Your hands, fingers, eyes, and your life aren’t worth risking it.
If the weapon looks less than 100%, or is over a decade old, I’ll pass unless the gun’s been in my gun safe and maintained the whole time.
