100-Lumen Pen Light

My experience is that when things go bad, the first thing that goes out is the power. I was on the 20th floor of an office building in Philadelphia when it lost power. Emergency lights came on, then immediately went out. I don’t think they were supposed to do that. This was in the 1990s, so we didn’t all have cell phones – and none of us had a flashlight. I still feel that uneasy fear when I think about how we went down nine or ten flights of emergency stairs before we finally got back to a level with lights. That was when I decided to always keep a Pen Light on me. If it has been more than a power outage, I would have really needed a light.

Fifteen years later I was in India when the power grid failed, and yes, i was in a high rise, but I’d learned my lesson and had my Pen Light on me. It’s amazing how just having a light in the dark helps keep the panic at bay.
