Bad Gun Handling – Shotgun Flip Loading

Shotgun Flip Loading might by really cool looking but it is just not the way to handle a firearm. Yes, this move from T2 makes this look very cool, but in practice you end up pointing the dangerous end of that weapon right at yourself. What if you had a misfire and it goes off just as your swinging it?

This is awesome in a movie, but not so much in real life.

This is a clear violation of Rule 1. No way that weapon is being pointed in a safe direction. Obviously when it is being twirled its being directed right at the shooter and anyone else behind them!

This guy is lucky that this example of bad trigger discipline didn’t end up killing someone. You can see the moment his finger slips on the trigger.

This is why practice, training, and education are so important. It is also why doing the same thing every time you perform the action is so important. Deviation leads to sloppiness. Sloppiness is how accidents like this happen.

Bad Gun Handling – Homemade Silencer

Homemade Silencer? Scary, and a bad idea. They are also Bad Gun Handling. I like to upgrade my firearms. But I use tools and parts that approved and legal for their intended purposes.

This Homemade Silencer is just plane dangerous. It is putting backpressure on the cylinder and is using a plastic bottle and duct tape. Not only is this an illegal modification in many places, but it is just plane dangerous.

This Homemade Silencer could cause a deadly malfunction and injure someone. It’s just scary. If you want to put a Silencer on a weapon, fill out the forms and do it the right way by buying one.

Bad Gun Handling – Shooting From Porch

Shooting From Porch is just a bad idea. I can’t see what is behind those trees. Could this guy own a thousand acres of land and there is nothing out there? Could it back to water? Sure, but even with each of those scenarios someone could have ended up there.

That is the first thing that scares me.

The second thing is that he’s up on that porch. What if someone walks around the corner from either side and wanders in front of that weapon?

I know I will get hate mail on this one. Sure, you can make a hundred scenarios where this might be safe. But that is the key word. Might. Even if you think you are alone on your property people may have broken down or gotten lost on their four wheelers. There are a lot of ways that people end up where you don’t think they should be.

Respect The Weapon, learn how to handle it properly.

How do you tell someone you don’t know how to handle a revolver without saying anything?

You snap the cylinder shut with a flick of your hand.

This is just so bad for the weapon. You want to support the crane. Using the weight of the cylinder to close it will eventually ruin the weapon. How badly it fails when it is stressed too much is a roll of the dice. Do you want to lose a finger because you didn’t handle your revolver with respect and care?

Bad Gun Handling – Looking Down The Barrel

Looking Down The Barrel of a loaded weapon is the ultimate example of Bad Gun Handling.

I was really hoping this was an airsoft gun, which would have been bad, but potentially less life threatening. Never, ever, point a loaded at anything you don’t intend to destroy. That includes the camera, especially if you are behind it.

This is why mandatory gun safety and range training should be required to buy a gun.

Looking Down The Barrel of a loaded weapon is a clear violation of Rule 1. Nothing could be worse from a safety perspective. This is how people die and their families are left with horrible questions. Was it an accident? Was there something we could have done to avoid the tragedy?

Bad Gun Handling – Accidental Shotgun Discharge

Training is important. It teaches you to do the same thing, every time, no matter what stress you are under. I am sure this gentlemen was excited because of the competition, and that caused him to put his finger on that trigger as he closed the break action shotgun, and caused an accidental discharge. Thankfully, it does not look like anyone was hurt.

Clearly this is a violation of Rule 3. Keep that finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. The shooter is clearly trying to move fast here. Instead, train slow and gradually speed up until you are comfortable moving more quickly.

Bad Gun Handling – Barrel Explosion

This Barrel Explosion is just scary. While the barrel is designed to fail above a certain pressure these guys still could have been seriously hurt. This is a scary example of gun handling. This is how someone loses an eye (no safety glasses), a hand, or worse case their life.

These guys are not experienced gun owners. How do I know? Because they are leaning over the water with no eye protection! No Ear Protection! No way they expected this Barrel Explosion!

Eventually these guys are going to lose the play stupid games get hurt lottery.

What is the rule violation? Clearly this is a violation of Rule 1. Because putting a long gun barrel in the water does not qualify as a safe direction.

Bad Gun Handling – Bulletproof Vests & Alcohol

Bulletproof Vests & Alcohol don’t mix. Just because one of them strapped on a vest doesn’t mean they were being smart in the slightest. They are both lucky their little game of Bulletproof Vests & Alcohol didn’t leave one of them dead and the other in prison for man slaughter.

These guys are just lucky they survived.

Clearly this is a violation of Rule 1. Shooting your buddy is not safe. I don’t care if he strapped on a vest first. I get it. You get curious. Will this vest really stop a bullet. Go buy a gel torso and strap your vest to that. Shooting at your buddy is not the way to test if the vest is going to work or not.

Bad Gun Handling – License To Shoot

You need a License to drive but not a License To Shoot. Basic gun safety and insurance should be mandatory. This is why there should be required education and training to own a firearm. I really think a lot of people wouldn’t be able to pass the test…

What would a License To Shoot do? It would make sure that people can pass a basic safety class. It would require insurance to make sure that if you cause damage the families and owners can get compensated.

That is important because as soon as weapons need insurance the insurance companies are going to do risk calculations. If you are a high risk gun owner you are going to pay more for insurance. That seems very logical to me.
