2020 RANGE DAY 3

I love it when I can make it to the range on a workday. There is something nice about having the whole range to yourself. I brought my S&W Model 64 and my Glock 23, and 100 rounds for each.

I love my S&W Model 64, and always have a great time shooting it. After my first twelve shots I already had one bullseye at 5 yards, and these are Birchwood Casey 6 Inch Targets, so all the hits would be head shots (if we were hunting zombies.

When it comes to the Glock 23 I am really trying to learn to love this weapon. It isn’t one I really “chose”. A buddy was in need and wanted to sell it, so I bought it from him. I put 100 rounds through it today, but just can’t get a grip that I like, which is one of the reasons I think my aim was a little out of wack.

My aim with the Glock is low and to the left, but the gun’s frame just wants to bite into my middle finger of my shooting hand where it wants to rub against the trigger guard. I think I’m trying to put too much hand on the grip, but its just feels so small in my hands. I think I can improve my comfort and aim if I bought some Grip Extenders, so I ordered some when I got home from the range. I’ll let you know how it goes once I install them and try them at the range.

I really want to enjoy shooting the Glock 23, I’m just not there yet.

When I was all done I swept up my brass, took down my targets, and happened to notice that the stand I was using was floppy. This wasn’t from me, but I did find it interesting to see how much of that two by three was blown out.

6/27/2020100Every time we go shooting the wheel gun is always the one we run out of ammo for.
6/13/2020100First outing of 2020.
10/07/2016150This really is one of my favorites. Pulling back the hammer forces me to pause - which usually helps my aim.
09/04/201550Just a quick outing to start off our weekend.
05/09/2015150The .38 is clearly a fun gun to shoot. Everyone was waiting to shoot it and I only brought three boxes of ammo for it - and they went quick.
04/26/2015100Everyone loves the semi autos but for some reason they always keep reaching for the wheel gun too. There is just something about pulling back the hammer and firing with a good wheel gun.
04/25/2015100My son wanted to shoot the revolver so I took him out to the club. He had a ball.
03/28/2015200My brother went through all my 38 ammo! But it was worth it, he was hitting the target much better with the revolver. I don't think he likes the sites on my CZ or Glock.

10/07/201650The thing I'm starting to love about this Glock is how clean it shoots - and how easy it is to clean - because it doesn't seem to get that dirty.
09/04/201550Just a quick outing to start off our weekend.
05/09/2015150My youngest was funny when he was shooting this . I don't really feel the difference between the .40 and the 9mm, but he said he can really tell the difference.
04/26/2015100My buddy is going through a divorce and needed some cash. So I got a very nice gun that had barely any rounds down the barrel for half the retail price.

2020 Range Day 2

Now that our gun club has opened its ranges (while enforcing social distancing and masks) we can go back out and work on our shooting skills again.

My youngest son and I went out yesterday and took our Model 64 S&W, Glock 23, and M&P 22. One of the things I always find interesting is how people just naturally gravitate to the wheel guns. Both other weapons we took us were semi autos, so they should eat ammo faster, but with 100 rounds for each gun, we ran out of ammo for the wheel gun first. This seems to happen every time, which should tell you how enjoyable it is to shoot revolvers. There are a ton of reasons that semi autos are better for carry and survival, but enjoying the experience matters too.

6/27/2020 S&W Model 64

After we warmed up a little we put up fresh targets at 5 meters, and put 1cm Orange dots on our targets.

I was shooting the Glock 23, and hit the mark on my last shot of a 10 round clip. This was a huge moment for me, as I’d bought the Glock 23 before going through back surgery, and its basically sat in my gun safe for the last couple years. I’ d only taken it out a few times, but was never able to get it to feel right in my hand. So being able to adjust and figure out its sights was a big deal. Up until this, I was actually thinking of selling it. I guess I’ll keep it now. I just need to get an extended magazine that I can put a grip extension on. I’ve got big hands and the Glock 23 just feels too small because the palm of my hand hangs off the bottom of the pistol

1cm Target Practice Glock 23

My youngest son did equally as well. He was using the Model 64 S&W and hit his target on his second shot. Don’t ask where the first one went because it wasn’t within the new target. I told him we could tell people it was his first shot – but the truth is out!!!

1cm Target Practice S&W 64

It was a good day, the only downside at all was I ran to my local Super Store Gunmart and found the aisles to be picked over. Apparently Covid-19 and the recent social unrest has created a huge demand for weapons and ammo.

Sunday Hand Guns

My oldest boy and I went out to the range last Sunday and got a few hundred rounds in. He just graduated from college and is now applying for local police departments and wanted to work on his hand guns skills a little.

I meant to post this last Sunday but it was one of those crazy weeks where cars broke down and I got stuck at work late several nights.

Overall he did really well. We set up one target six inches off the ground and one at a normal chest height and alternated between the two to make target re-acquisition the focus.

We both did well at first using the M&P22 to warm up, then our aims go a lot worse. It wasn’t until I got home and started to clean guns that I realized the M&P22 was starting to foul with lead.

We then moved to the 9mm, .38, and .40 to continue practice.

We ended the day with a single clip of 9mm apiece firing one round every 3 seconds for a final scored target.

Tyler:

3 shots 7 ring = 21

1 shot 8 ring (I gave him the one on the line) = 8

1 shot 9 ring = 9

1 shot 10 ring = 10

Total hits 6/10

Total 48 points

Old Man (Matt):

4 shots 7 ring (he gave me the on on the outside edge) = 28

2 shots 9 ring = 18

2 shots 10 ring = 20

Total hits 8/10

Total 66 points

We were both really happy with our “okay” shooting. First of all these are 6 inch targets at 10 yards.  Then there is the fact that he hasn’t really been shooting while he was in college – and I am really just now getting super mobile after my second back surgery.

Plus, I beat the kid in points so I was just happy to still have something on him.
