The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 8

Nebraska opens exactly where Pretty Much Dead Already ended. Rick has just put down Sophia, and Carol and the team are all stunned by what they just saw.

Sophia Has Been Put To Rest

Hershel’s people are just as devastated, their family members have all been put down, or mostly put down? When Hershel’s daughter runs to her family, we find out that not all the walkers are completely dead, they were just mostly dead, but thankfully Andrea was there to finish the job.

Andrea Finishing The Job

The Secret is Out

With the secret out, Shane goes off on Hershel, who in turn demands that Team Rick moves off his land. Rick and Shane then go at it. Rick is pissed that Shane forced the issue, and Shane is pissed that Rick seems fine with the fact that there was a barn full of walkers.

Glen then proceeds to put his foot in his mouth, telling Maggie that now that they know what happened to Sophia they will move on. He doesn’t seem to see how Maggie is taking the “move on” bit. She wants him to stay.

As everyone is dealing with the fallout Andrea and several of the others clean up the Zombies, which leads to an arm getting free from the truck. I don’t know why, but I really liked this scene. It speaks to how messy The Walking Dead world is, and also to just how much we, as humans, can normalize just about anything.

Arm Pick Up

Meanwhile, Glen and Maggie are trying to deal with what happens next. Maggie clearly wants Glen to stay, and Glen isn’t picking up on what she’s laying down.

Falling Off The Wagon

When they go to find Hershel, they find he’s gone, and likely fallen off the wagon too boot. After finding an empty flask Rick decides he needs to go into town to get Hershel. Lori doesn’t understand why, not until Rick tells her they need Hershel – to deliver Shane’s baby. (He didn’t say that, but I’m pretty sure that’s Shane’s baby.)

Dale then drops a few reality bombs on Lori, telling her that he’s pretty sure that Shane killed Otis, and that Shane is going to kill someone else. Lori looks perplexed, but I think she knows that Shane has a dark side.

Out on the road, Glen tells Rick about what has been going on with Maggie.

Glen, Telling Rick About Maggie

Glen isn’t sure if Maggie really cares about him, but Rick tells him that everyone else can see it. Maggie cares about him. Glen is still so innocent and sweet at this point. The only women he’s ever professed his love to were his mom and sisters.

The Bar

In town they find Hershel at the bar, and Rick tells him that Beth needs his help. While Rick is trying to convince Hershel to come back to the farm Lori has decided to go into town to tell Rick they need Hershel emergently, and in turn ends up hitting a walker while looking at a map, and then flipping her car.

While Rick is comforting Hershel, two newcomers walk into the bar. The newly enlarged group shares a drink, before the newcomers share how they made their way from Philadelphia to Georgia before dropping the bomb that Fort Benning has been overrun.

The newcomers start to set of Rick’s alarm bells when they get real interested in where Rick’s people are, and if they have someplace to hole up. Things get ugly after Rick tells the newcomers they can’t join up with them. This leads to Rick having to take care of business.

Rick Taking Care Of Business

I love how Rick puts a final bullet into the bigger guy – just to make sure, and never has any hesitation. This is the Rick that kicks butt.

Nebraska Scoring

Nebraska scored an 88/100, making it a solid, Worth Your Time episode. It is a ground breaking episode the reveals what happened to Sophia. Nebraska is one of those episodes that just sticks in your mind.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 7

Pretty Much Dead Already opens with tension. Rick and Lori are dealing with the fallout of her unable to keep her legs closed for Shane, while Glen keeps looking over at Maggie who is standing on the porch. He’s decided he doesn’t have a choice, to keep the secret any longer, and drops the bomb on Team Rick that the barn is full of walkers.

The Barn Is Full of Walkers

The barn full of walker ignites the group. Shane wants to leave while Rick and Daryl want to stay and find Sophia.

With the secret out Glen begs Maggie to talk, but she just breaks an egg over his head, not ready to make nice. While Maggie is taking her anger out on Glen, Daryl is stubbornly trying to go back out, wounded, to search for Sophia. When Carol stops him, he loses it.

As everyone is dealing with their sh*t, Rick goes to talk to Hershel.

Rick Tells Hershel They Found The Barn

Rick wants to talk about the barn. Hershel just tells Rick he wants his group to move on by the end of the week. He doesn’t want to talk about the barn. Rick tells Hershel that forcing them to leave would mean putting everyone at risk, including his pregnant wife. Hershel doesn’t want to hear it.

A little later Hershel tells Maggie that he gave Rick the order to leave, and Maggie uses his faith to show him what the bible would have said. Hershel struggles with what Maggie is saying but he gets pulled away when he’s told “its happened again”.

Hershel bring Rick with him to the creek. The bottom of the stream is soft and silty, and walkers get stuck there. Maggie must have an impact on Hershel, even though they didn’t really finish their conversation. Hershel asks Rick if he can stop killing the walkers.

Zombie Capture

Rick asks Hershel what they are going to do when the Barn gets full but Hershel doesn’t answer as they wrangle the two Zombies away from the stream.

Back at the farm Glen confronts Maggie, telling her he never wants to see her in danger again, and the words made Maggie realize he does really care about her – and smooching commenced.

While Maggie and Glen are making up, Dale and Shane are having it out. Shane wants the guns that Dale is trying to stash, and it almost comes to blows.

Shane is pissed, and that anger overflows onto rick and Hershel when he sees them coming back with the two restrained Zombies. This leads to Shane screaming about how a sick person couldn’t take multiple gunshot wounds to the chest – before he finally puts the walker down with a headshot.

That’s Enough

It’s still not enough for Shane though, and he lets loose the barn zombies in a fit of rage, which leads to one of the iconic moments of The Walking Dead universe. After the team puts down the other zombies, the last walker out the gate is revealed. The team has found Sophia.

The Team Finds Sophia

Pretty Much Dead Already Scoring

Pretty Much Dead Already is one of those episodes that you will remember for years to come. I still remember this episode when it was on the air the first time. I remember sitting on the couch with my older boys, and we all gasped when we saw Sophia. Pretty Much Dead Already scores a 100/100. It is a master class in suspense and character development.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 6

After how Chupacabra ended with Glen finding the walkers in Hershel’s barn, I guess Secrets is the perfect name for Episode 6.

Secrets opens with Carl back on his feet, feeding the chickens with Lori. Which leads to one of Hershel’s daughters collecting some of those chickens to feed to the walkers in the barn.

Which leads to Maggie bribing Glen to be quiet. Apparently she doesn’t know how to bribe a guy? Food?

Bribery

After Maggie gives Glen his basket of food, we get to see Andrea apologize to Daryl for winging him with a rifle. Daryl is cool with it though, he knows she thought he was a Zombie. Such a good guy.

Glen then gets into Lori’s business in an unwelcome way, telling her she has a medical condition because she’s preggo. Needless to say Lori hasn’t told anyone, and Glenn doesn’t understand why it might be an issue because he doesn’t know she’s a few weeks in – a few weeks longer than Rick has been back maybe?

We then get one of those silly moments. Carl wants to learn to shoot, and Lori is against it. It’s the Zombie Apocalypse for god’s sake, give your kid the tools to survive woman!!!

Glen then does exactly what Maggie asked him not to do, and tells Dale about the walkers, and about Lori’s pregnancy. Dale covers for Glen and tells Hershel he discovered the barn while out for a walk.

We then get our second dose of silliness in the season. Hershel is keeping the walkers because he believes they are still people. His wife and stepson are in there.

While talking to Hershel Lori finds out that the invitation to stay on the farm has an expiration date, and then realizes that her secret is out when Dale tries to comfort her after she gets nauseous when he’s cooking. Lori is not happy to have her secret out, which leads Lori to ask Glen to make another pharmacy run.

This in turn shows us Maggie’s mad face.

Mad Maggie

She is pissed, and her attitude doesn’t get much better when Glen hands her his shopping list. He might not know what the meds are, but I think she does.

Unfortunately for Maggie, there is a walker in the pharmacy. Luckily for her Glen is there to take care of business, which also exposes her to just how dangerous walkers are.

Maggie Almost Gets Eaten

While saving Maggie may have put Glen back in her Maggie’s good graces, Maggie is still pissed, she’s just mad at Lori now for making Glen go into town for the morning after pill. This also leads to Maggie telling Glen that she does see who he is, and that she does care for him, she just can’t bear the thought of losing anyone else she cares about.

We then cut over to Shane and Andrea making a run into a nearby housing development to look for Sophia, but all they find is a neighborhood full of walkers. This leads to Shane showing off his shooting skills:

While also giving Andrea the moment she needs to find her shooting mojo against walker targets. Shane forces her to clear her weapon and take care of the walker coming at her, which does seem to help her.

Maggie Clears A Jam

Andrea in turn thanks Shane for teaching her by grabbing his crotch on the way back to the farm. The camera pulls back to the car stopped on the road. We hear a horn and then cut away as Shane and Andrea get busy.

Back at the farm, Lori decides to take the morning after pill, then sticks her finger down her throat, unable to do it.

Dale is there when Shane comes back with Andrea, and he is very perceptive. He knows that something happened between Shane and Andrea and Dale basically tells Shane to get in his car and leave. Dale saw Shane aim at Rick in the woods, and he doesn’t trust him. Dale shares a bit too much with Shane though, and gets threatened in return.

Back in the Grimes tent Rick finds the morning after pill which leads him to go and confront Lori. She tells him she’s pregnant, and he asks if she still is, and she admits to puking up the pills. Rick is pissed that she was keeping it secret, but he is also convinced they can make it work.

This leads to Rick asking Lori if there is anything else he needs to know, and Lori admits that she and Shane were bang buddies. Of course she puts it in less graphic terms.

Bang Buddies

Rick takes this way to well in my opinion. He basically puts words in her mouth about how she thought he was dead. Am I just nuts or would he be a little more pissed – especially since she’s preggo? Can he be sure its his? He couldn’t have survived for long on that hospital bed with no care, which means she had to jump into the sack with Shane pretty quick – and or was already in the sack with Shane. Shane is a ladies man, he was even banging a teacher in highs chool, and Rick and Lori were having issues. Is it so hard to believe they were playing tag long before the apocalypse?

I’m giving Secrets an 85/100. The points are coming off because of the silly, counter intuitive logic used in several of the situations. Still Worth Your Time, but there are times when Secrets left me scratching my head.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 5

Chupacabra starts with a flashback to just before everything fell completely apart. Lori and Shane are in in a column of other survivors, stopped on a highway. When they hear helicopters in the distance Shane and Lori go to look through the trees. They see the military dropping napalm on the streets.

Napalm Vs Zombies

When we come back from the first commercial break Lori has just woke up. She slept in. She doesn’t feel so good, but she’s not going to tell anyone why just yet.

On the porch, Glenn is strumming a guitar when Maggie comes out to destroy his hopes and dream. This one hurt.

Eleven Condoms = Eleven Lost Minutes

While Lori and Carol plan a meal for Hershel to show their appreciation of his hospitality, Rick and the boys are heading out early to search for Sophia. While out on the trail Shane uses an all in one Multi-Tool to hammer a flag into a tree. If your interested, I think this is the the Multi-Tool.

While out on the search Shane and Rick have a tough conversation about what they are really doing, and whether Sophia could realistically still be alive. Daryl on the other hand gets thrown off his horse after it gets spooked by a snake. In the fall Daryl ends up spiked on one of his own crossbow bolts. Ouch..

Daryl On An Arrow

Things do not get any better for Daryl as he tries to get out of the ravine he’s fallen into. After taking a tumble while trying to climb out he loses consciousness and wakes up to a walker about to take a bite. This leads to one of Daryl’s many epic Zombie kills.

Daryl Being Awesome

With a few walkers dead, Daryl is forced to climb out of the ravine in pain, and hallucinating about his brother taunting him. But he does make it out.

Back at the farm Hershel isn’t happy with all the mixing between the groups. Especially if the mixing is between Maggie and Glen.

We then get to see Dale sharing some very important knowledge with Glen about woman and their cycles.

Andrea gets excited when she sees a walker approaching in the distance. She takes aim with her rifle, even though Dale is telling her not too shoot.

Walker In The Distance?

Rick and Shane just reach Daryl and realize he’s not a walker when Andrea takes the shot…and thankfully only grazes him. Daryl has made it back to the farm, and the doll he found while searching is Sophia’s.

Inside the house, the planned meal is mildly tense. But Maggie does pass Glen a note, it sounds like he’s about to be down to 10 condoms. Hopefully it costs Maggie more than just a minute of her life. So after initiating, why does Maggie look so scared when she reads Glen’s reply?

Ever Done It In A Hayloft?

Maggie runs to the barn, but it’s too late, Glen is looking down at Hershel’s secret.

Zombie Barn

Chupacabra ends with Maggie telling Glen he wasn’t supposed to see inside the shed. I guess we have to wait for Episode 6 to see how Maggie is going to keep Glen quiet? I think she’s got eleven options?

Chupacabra Scoring

Chupacabra scored a 97/100. It was a strong, well done episode with an awesome focus on Daryl. Yes, Daryl will get you bonus points when it comes to screen time. It’s just the way it is.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 4

Cherokee Rose opens with Carl waking up. He’s survived the surgery and his fever has gone down. Sadly, his first question when he wakes up is about Sophia. Just after Carl falls back asleep the rest of Team Rick pulls up on Hershel’s front lawn.

Shortly after, Hershel holds a service for Otis, and they ask Shane to say a few words. Otis’s wife twists the knife, begging Shane to tell her what happened, that Otis’s death had meaning.

In the next scene Maggie provides maps, and the team is figuring out how to search for Sophia when Hershel asks Rick and his people not to carry guns. Hershel doesn’t think they are necessary. Come on! Its the Zombie Apocalypse!

When then get to see Rick playing matchmaker when Maggie says she wants to make a supply run. Glen should go with her – to keep her safe. I love how Glen can barely talk to Maggie. He then watches her coming down the road, clearly appreciating what he’s seeing.

Farmer’s Daughter

Glen’s interrupted by Lori, coming over to ask him to get something discreetly, something form the feminine hygiene section.

Just before Maggie and Glenn head into town Dale and T-Dog find a bloated Zombie in the well. They have no choice but to try and get it out so it doesn’t contaminate the water supply.

Blob Zombie In The Well

Glen almost gets bit on their first attempt to get the Zombie out of the well before they are able to use a horse to get it out of the well, or at least halfway out of the well.

Blob Zombie With Split Personality

With the well taken care of, Maggie and Glen head into town.

Maggie And Glen Head To The Pharmacy

This leads to an awesome interaction between Maggie and Glen. Glen is trying to get Lori her secret pregnancy test when Maggie comes over and Glen fumbles to hide it. He’s standing there holding a box of condoms when she asks him what’s going on.

Glen Is About To Get Lucky

I love how Glen is so shook by Maggie. He’s clearly infatuated, and is about to be shocked at how forward Maggie can be. I also loved his reaction when she takes her shirt off and he’s just like “Wow”.

On the way back to town Glen is glowing, at least until Maggie tells him not to spoil it, it was a one time thing. Except we all know that now that she’s enjoyed some time with Glen she’s not going to be able to resist.

When Daryl gets back from searching for Sophia, we hear the story of the Cherokee Rose, and we get to see Daryl’s emotional side as he gives Carol just what she needed.

Cherokee Rose

Back inside the house Rick and Carl bond over both having survived gunshots, which spurs Rick to give Carl his cowboy hat.

Cherokee Rose ends with Lori and Rick having a quiet moment before Lori heads outside to use the pregnancy test that Glen retrieved for her.

Urinating

I also appreciate how thorough the closed captions are.

Cherokee Rose ends with Lori looking down at the positive pregnancy test with a sob, crouching in the dark.

Cherokee Rose scored a 94/100. It was a powerful episode and is Worth Your Time.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 3

Save the Last One opens with Shane giving himself a buzz cut as the bathroom steams up. At the end of the last episode, Bloodletting, he was trapped in the school with Otis. So we know he made it back, hopefully with the tools and meds to save Carl. After the opening credits we cut to Shane and Otis fleeing through the school. A horde hot on their heals as Rick is telling Lori a story about Shane stealing their principle’s car in a voice over.

School Horde

Spoilers Below

As Rick tells Lori about how Shane destroyed their principal’s car, Shane and Otis are on the run. We know he made it back, but I guess we are about to find out how.

Meanwhile Daryl and Andrea go out into the woods to look for Sophia. Carol’s balling her eyes out in the RV, struck down with grief. While out on the hunt Andrea and Daryl share a few touching moments. We get to see Daryl’s human side as well as some backstory. Daryl’s had a tougher than average childhood.

We then flash back to Shane and Otis in the school. They are trapped on top of the bleachers, a horde reaching up for them.

Shane & Otis Trapped On The Bleachers

They have a plan, but it requires they split up. Otis is too big to fit through the upper windows. Shane covers Otis long enough for the big man to make it into the gym. Shane then makes it to the upper windows of the gym where he is able to drop/fall to the ground outside. Unfortunately for Shane, he hurt his leg in the fall and is now a bit gimpy.

T-Dog Gets Some Stitches

Back at Hershel’s farm Glenn and the wounded T-Dog have found their way to the front stoop. Maggie sees he’s wounded and goes to get her dad to look at the injury. Inside Hershel tells Rick and Lori time is running out. If Shane and Otis don’t get back they may have to operate without a respirator. Carl’s belly is filling up with blood. After T-Dog gets some stitches, Maggie and Glen have a heart to heart on the porch. Such a small moment, but so important to both of them.

Back on the hunt for medical supplies, Shane is in trouble. He’s running out of shotgun shells and he’s got a lot of walkers at his back. Lucky for him, Otis also made it out of the locker room and is there to give Shane a hand. It’s not long before Shane and Otis realize they are in trouble.

Shane & Otis About To Be Run Down

Its a slow moving hunt, but Shane is wounded and Otis is a big boy. The horde is slowly catching up.

We then cut back to “current time” and Shane has showed up in the pickup with the supplies. But Otis didn’t make it. Hershel tells them not to tell Otis’s wife, he needs her to help with the surgery. Rick hugs Shane, and Shane tells them that Otis was covering him. Shane breaks up a bit as he tells Rick that Otis was pulled down.

Inside Maggie is crying. Losing Otis reminds her of all the others they have lost. Glen does his best to listen and give Maggie comfort.

Otis

Outside Hershel has come out to tell Rick and Lori the surgery has been successful and Carl has stabilized. Now Hershel has to tell Otis’s wife he didn’t make it.

Back inside Maggie gives Shane some clothes, clothes that used to belong to Otis. Shane takes a long look in the mirror before beginning to shave his head. His eyes are full of darkness as he remembers exactly how Otis died.

Shane and Otis were struggling to stay in front of the horde. With Shane’s wounded leg, he is barely able to stay ahead of the horde. It is time for Shane to show just how brutal life in there world is. Shane uses his last round to shoot Otis in the leg before beating him until he lets go of the medical bag.

Otis is left on the ground to be devoured as Shane escapes.

Otis Buffet

The episode closes with Shane staring into a foggy mirror, his eyes hard and haunted.

Save the Last One Scoring

Save the Last One is intense, but it is more of a psychological intensity than a Zombie intensity, which resulted in this episode scoring an 83/100, making it Worth Your Time.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 2

Bloodletting begins with a short flashback. Lori is remembering the day that Shane came to tell her that Rick has been shot in the line of duty. Just before Shane arrived she’s telling a girlfriend that her and Rick had a fight, and she was not being reasonable. Rick responds to her anger with coolness, and that makes her even madder. The way Lori responds when Shane pulls up is just heartbreaking. How does a police wife respond when her husbands partner shows up without him?

Is He Alive?

Spoilers Below

Shane tells Lori that its his fault. The call said there were two men in the car, but there was a third. The third man got the drop on them. Lori has to tell Carl that his dad has been shot.

When we come back from the first break, Rick, Shane, and Otis (the man who shoots Carl while hunting deer) are running for the farm. Otis told them that Hershel will be able to help them. This does raise some interesting questions about how well supplied Hershel’s camp is, because, well, Otis is a big boy – which is slowing them down a bit.

Carl Is Down

We are then to meet a newcomer. This newcomer will become one of the major characters for multiple seasons. Please let me introduce Maggie. Maggie sees Rick running, and alerts her father, Hershel. When Rick gets to the porch the first thing Hershel asks is whether Carl was bit. Once they confirm Carl was shot, not bit, the Hershel Emergency medical team goes into action.

Back in the woods, Team Daryl is leading the rest of the group on their continued search for Sophia. They heard the shot in the distance that hit Carl, but have no idea what actually happened – yet.

Back at Hershel’s house, we see Carl struggling, screaming as Hershel removes the bullet fragments. At least until he passes out from the pain. Lucky for Carl, him and his father have the same blood type.

How To Save Carl

Hershel has stabilized Carl, but he needs to open his belly to stop a bleeder. The local hospital burnt down, but FEMA opened a shelter at the local high school and there are medical supplies there. Rick can’t leave, he has to be there to give Carl blood. This leaves the medical supply mission up to Shane and Otis, while Maggie goes to get Lori, on a f*cking horse!!!

Maggie’s Ride

Back at Hershel’s farm, Rick and Hershel are having a heart to heart, at least until Maggie returns with Lori and she’s faced with seeing her son on the brink of death, pale and unresponsive from his wounds.

We then get an awesome back and forth between Lori and Hershel as he tells her he’s a vet, and not a combat vet, a vet as in a veterinarian.

The High School

Meanwhile Shane and Otis have reached the FEMA site at the local high school, and things do not look so great. There are a lot of Zombies about.

Zombie Hordes At The High School

With so many Zombies about, Shane is forced to wait until nightfall when he can use road flares liberated from one of the cop cars to create a distraction to get the Zombies away from the FEMA trailer.

Flares To Distract The Walkers

The distraction gives Shane and Otis the time they need to collect the medical supplies, but the horde is hot on their trail as they leave the trailer. This is one of the reasons that The Walking Dead is so awesome, the Zombie hordes are just so well done:

The Horde Hot On Shane’s Heels

With hordes coming at them from every side, Shane and Otis are forced to take shelter inside the school, at least as long as the gate will hold.

Shane And Otis Are Cornered

Bloodletting Scoring

Bloodletting was another episode of The Walking Dead that kept me glued to the screen. It scored a 91/100, and is Worth Your Time. What cost it 9 points? Mostly very minor things. The first is that a lot of time bullet fragments are left in patients unless they are causing issues. So while the surgery is still necessary for the bleeder, going after the fragments is just asking for trouble. The other minor thing is the Zombies are heavy in the last few minutes, but you can never have enough Zombie kills, and there was really just one good kill when Daryl kills the Zombie that was menacing Andrea before Maggie shows up on her stead to save her.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 1

What Lies Ahead kicks off Season 2 for The Walking Dead.

Rick hasn’t forgotten about his promise to Morgan, and before they flee Atlanta, Rick is talking into his walkie, trying to let Morgan know that the CDC in Atlanta was a dead end, they are trying to move on to Fort Benning.

Path to Fort Benning

If there weren’t Zombies and abandoned cars, that is just a two hour drive, it’s even walkable at just under forty hours, even if you were only going to hike eight hours a day for a week. If you pushed yourself this could easily be done in just three days. But of course during the Zombie Apocalypse, nothing is going to be easy.

Traffic

Spoilers Below

Team Rick hasn’t made it far when they run into a massive traffic snarl, which is made worse when the RV radiator blows, bringing the survivors convoy to a complete halt.

With little option, the group spreads out to scavenge. They need gas, water, supplies, and of course a radiator hose. The survivors are scavenging when Rick sees a walker in the distance.

Target Aquired

And then the horde that is rapidly approaching.

The scavengers do their best to hide under cars and get out of site but T-Dog cuts hi arm pretty badly and everyone else is freaking out as the horde filters between the cars they are hiding under. Andrea gets stuck in the RV, trying to put together her pistol as a walker stumbles around inside the cabin.

We then get two awesome Zombie Kills in rapid succession. The first is Daryl saving T-Dog with a nice stealth kill:

Stealth Kill

Followed up very quickly by Andrea also discovering what an awesome tool a screwdriver is to kill the Undead. Its perfect for eye socket to brain damage.

Andrea in Action

Andrea of course isn’t quite as calm and composed as Daryl is, but she gets the job done.

Sophia Goes Missing

Outside the group thinks they’ve survived, but just when they were about to start coming out from under the cars Sophia is chased out from under her car and flees into the woods. Rick follows her and is able to find her, but there are walkers everywhere. He stashes her in a hole in the bank of a stream and leads the group of walkers away from here, trying to save her.

When Rick loops back after losing the horde, Sophia isn’t there. Team Rick spreads out in the woods, searching for Sophia.

As Daryl tracks Sophia and Rick follows, we get introduced to the first of many mistakes Carl will make when he decides to scavenge a bag of edged weapons without any backup.

Out in the wood Rick & Daryl take down a walker and when Rick finds what looks like skin under its nails, they have no choice but to gut it to see if its got Sophia in its guts.

Thankfully the walker only has some woodchuck in her belly.

When Rick and Daryl come back as night is falling Carol is heartbroken. Her little girl is out in the woods, in the dark.

The next morning the survivors distribute the edged weapons Carl scavenged and head out to search for Sophia again. Dale is worried about Andrea having a firearm, and Shane agrees that they should restrict who has firearms to help save everyone. Andrea wanted to die back at the CDC, and only came out because she didn’t want Dale’s blood on her hands – and she let’s him know she’s not happy about it.

Out in the woods the searchers discover a tent, and there is a brief moment of hope that Sophia may have found it and spent the night, but when Daryl goes to search the only thing inside is a suicide.

The team is still in the woods when they hear bells ringing in the distance and head for the sound. Could Sophia of found a church?

T-Dog & Dale

As the searchers march for the church T-Dog and Dale have a wonderful conversation. Dale already fixed the RV’s radiator, but didn’t tell anyone because he doesn’t want to give the group a reason to stop searching for Sophia too soon, or as he puts it, to weigh the benefits of the many against the one. Jeffrey DeMunn, who plays Dale, is just a phenomenal actor.

After the searchers clear the church Shane and Lori argue outside. Shane’s planning on running, and he’s not willing to talk to Rick. He pretty much leaves it up to Lori to tell Rick whatever she wants.

Rick takes a moment alone inside the church to beg a higher power to give him a sign. He feels responsible for Sophia being lost, and he’s struggling with guilt. He feels responsible.

Rick, Shane, and Carl end up out in the woods and come upon a deer. There is a magical moment as Carl walks up to the wild creature, and then a shot comes out of nowhere, taking down the deer and hitting Carl with a through and through shot.

What Lies Ahead ends with Carl hitting the ground, a gunshot wound to his chest. Now we have to wait until next week to see if he survives!

What Lies Ahead Scoring

What Lies Ahead scored a 95/100, making it Worth Your Time. The episode starts out strong and ends strong. There was a small lull in the 3rd quarter that cost it just a few points.

The Walking Dead, Season 1, Episode 6

TS-19 starts with an intense flashback to Shane at Rick’s bedside. Outside the hospital is being overrun by the undead. Shane struggles, first trying to pick Rick up before going to find a gurney. As Shane is trying to find transport we see soldiers gunning down hospital staff. The soldier lives long enough for walkers to catch them off guard and pull a few of them down. There is chaos. The soldiers are shooting anything not wearing a uniform. In a panic Shane pushes the gurney against Rick’s door and flees.

Shane At Rick’s Hospital Beside During The Collapse

The CDC

As the flashback ends we jump back to current time. Team Rick is entering he CDC and we are introduced to Dr. Jenner, the sole survivor left at the facility. After a quick blood test to rule out active infections Jacqui mentions they haven’t eaten in days. This leads to Dr. Jenner bringing them to the cantina.

The Survivors Enjoying Food And Drink

The food and drink flows and everyone is happy. At least until Shane wrecks the mood by pushing Dr. Jenner for some answers. Dr. Jenner tells the survivors that there were waves of defections as things got worse. Then a wave of suicides once it was clear the city was overrun.

When dinner breaks the team is treated to a rare treat in the apocalypse, hot showers!

While Rick is in his cups Shane confronts Lori with his need and jealousy. Lori scratches him up when things turn physical.

The next morning everyone is suffering from their celebrations from the previous day when Dale asks a few critical questions. This leads Dr. Jenner to show us the MRI of TS-19, Test Subject 19.

Test Subject 19 MRI

Then comes the stunning revelation that TS-19 was actually Dr. Jenner’s wife. Dale then points to the clock, and everyone gets a kick in the gut.

Decontamination Cycle

The facility is running out of power. When it does, it’s going to perform a deadly decontamination cycle which is essentially a fire bomb. Dr. Jenner is resigned to die. There is nothing left in the world for him. He tells the survivors they should hug their loved ones and shut their eyes, it will be quick.

The message rings true for Jacqui and Andrea. They are ready to go and sit with Dr. Jenner as the others work their way back to the main lobby. Dale sits with Andrea, telling her that if she’s going to stay, he is too.

The rest of the survivors escape thanks to the grenade that Carol saved from Ricks clothing. The grenade he took from the tank in Guts. The group is about to pull away when we see Dale and Andrea. She was willing to die, but not if it meant killing Dale.

TS-19 ends with the team pulling away in their caravan.

TS-19 Scoring

Season 1 of The Walking Dead ends at the same amazing pace as the rest of the season, which earned it a 99/100. The whole season is Worth Your Time, and is going to be tough for any other series to compete with. If you haven’t watched The Walking Dead recently, it is well worth visiting again.

The Walking Dead, Season 1, Episode 4

Vatos opens with Amy and Andrea in a canoe, talking about their father and how he taught them to fish. Amy and Andrea have a twelve year age gap and as they chat they realize that their father taught them each differently. He gave them each what they needed though. This leads them to another of their Dad’s rules, “No crying in the boat.”

Andrea & Amy Fishing

Up at camp Dale is on over watch, keeping an eye on everyone from atop his RV. As Dale sees Jim in the distance digging the camera zooms in for just a moment. Jim is digging what looks like graves. Dale goes over to check on him but Jim isn’t in a talkative mood and just keeps digging.

Jim Digging

Merle’s Rescue

Meanwhile Merle’s rescue team is coming to grips with what happened on the roof. Daryl has a brief moment of murderous rage before he switches back to tracker mode. It is time to follow his brother’s blood trail. The trail leads them to two dead walkers, one with a bloody wrench near it. Daryl comments that his brother is the toughest *sshole he ever met.

Merle’s Wrench Kill

Rick reminds Daryl that anyone can pass out from blood lose, no matter how tough they are. They continue the search until they come to a kitchen area where they find lit sterno candles and burnt skin. Merle cauterized his stump.

Merle’s Cauterization Station

Daryl wants to keep searching, but Atlanta is huge. They agree to look around a few blocks, but only after they get the guns that Rick dropped by the tank.

Camp

Back at the camp Amy and Andrea have returned from their fishing trip as victorious heroes. Because of their fishing skills the camp gets to have a real meal. The survivors are celebrating their good fortune when Dale comes back and lets them know they have a problem. Dale points up to the hill where Jim is still digging.

Dale leads the camp group up to talk to Jim, but Jim doesn’t want to hear any feedback. He refuses to stop until Shane takes the shovel from him and handcuffs him. Shane tells him he’s going to be okay but Jim says he doesn’t believe it. It’s the same thing Jim told his family right before they were torn out of his grasp and eaten. The survivors tie Jim to a tree. After some rest he tries to bargain for his freedom. He tries to sound normal, but there is still crazy in his eyes.

Get The Guns

In Atlanta Glenn is laying out his plan to grab the guns. He wants the team to split up on either side of the bag so once he grabs it he’s go someplace to run in either direction. Daryl asks Glenn what he did before the apocalypse. I think Daryl was expecting something more than “Pizza Delivery” as Glenn’s old profession.

While Glenn is grabbing the bag of guns (and Rick’s hat) Daryl finds himself face to face with another survivor. The kid Daryl finds is screaming for someone, which leads to a brief scuffle before two others show up. Daryl is outnumbered and gets a beat down. As Daryl is getting the snot kicked out of him Glenn comes around the corner, which leads the newcomers to focus on Glenn.

Charge

Glenn gets beat but Daryl saves the bags of guns with a well placed crossbow shot. They aren’t able to save Glenn though. The newcomers show up in a car and kidnap Glenn before speeding away, leaving one of their own behind in the rush.

Rick, T-Dog and Daryl interrogate their prisoner. Daryl wants to know if they also took Merle like they took Glenn, which leads to Daryl trying to kick the kids face in. I love this Daryl. It is the angry, impulsive, raw metal that the apocalypse hammers into a smart, deadly survivor in coming years. Going back and re-watching these old episodes really makes me appreciate the character development of my favorite survivors.

The Prisoner

The kids not speaking, which forces Daryl to use psychological warfare. He throws Merle’s hand at the kid and tell him it was from the last person who didn’t speak when told to. The kid freaks out and falls off his chair as Daryl bears down on him. Daryl tells him they are going to start with the feet this time. Not surprisingly, the kid breaks, and leads the group back to where his friends took Glenn.

Rick and team approach the Vatos and we are introduced to Guillermo, the leader of the gang. Guillermo drops some truth, calling out Rick for saying they just want to talk. From Guillermo’s perspective his guys were jumped and defended themselves. Guillermo wants the bag of guns in exchange for the damage done to his people. Then he’ll agree to the prisoner exchange.

Things are about to get very ugly. Guillermo tells Rick that if he doesn’t do what he wants Glenn is getting fed to his three man eating dogs. Rick and the Vatos are about to thrown down when the violence is interrupted by an old lady. It’s hard to understand what she’s saying, but someone needs their medicine.

Guillermo’s Charge

The old lady takes Rick by the hand and leads him to “the Asian boy”. On the way Rick realizes that the Vatos aren’t bad people. They’ve been protecting an old folks home. Better still, we get to see Guillermo’s three, man eating dogs.

Guillermo’s Man Eaters

Compromise

Rick pulls Guillermo aside, angry that they almost came to blows. Rick does the right thing and splits the gun stash with Guillermo. When Team Rick heads back to the van, it has been stolen, presumably by Merle, who is going to want revenge.

Back at the camp Andrea is looking for something to wrap Amy’s birthday present in. Meanwhile Shane checks on Jim before cutting him loose.

As the camp enjoys their fish fry, Rick, Daryl, T-Dog and Glenn are running back. They are afraid that Merle is going to hurt their friends and loved ones.

Running Back To Camp

As the camp is enjoying there fish fry Morales asks Dale why he still winds his watch every day. Dale quotes Faulkner about time.

I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire, which will fit your individual needs no better than it did mine or my father’s before me; I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you may forget it for a moment now and then and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it.

― William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury

As Amy goes to the restroom Ed hears noises just outside his tent. When he gets up to punish whomever is there comes face to face with a walker. Ed is swarmed in his tent as Amy steps out of the RV to complain about toilette paper. She steps directly into the grasp of a walker. Andrea looks up just in time to see her sister get bitten.

Amy Gets Bit

The camp is swarming with walkers as Shane tries to rally the survivors, yelling for everyone to make for the high ground by the RV. Rick’s small group shows up with their new firepower just in time to save the camp from being completely overwhelmed.

We then get the first of many punches to the balls that is to come as Andrea holds Amy in her arms as her sister dies.

The episode ends with Jim saying he now remembers the dream, and why he dug the graves as the camera scans the bodies on the ground around camp.

Vatos Scoring

Vatos was an excellent episode with good character development, tension and action. It is what every Zombies Series should strive to be! Vatos is Worth Your Time and scored a 94/100.
