Antimicrobial Soap

Pre Covid this Antimicrobial Soap cost me $12 bucks. Thanks to Covid, the price spiked up to around $60. Thankfully it has since come back down and is now $20 bucks. Yes, that sucks a little, but this Soap. is also a must have survival item. When it comes to survival first aid the first thing you should always start with is a good scrub. What good is sewing up a wound if you get it infected in the process?

Pre disaster I use this Soap to wash from elbows to fingertips when I get done doing dirty work. If you have ever replaced a toilet at home you will understand why this Soap is so useful. It is perfect to get that grime off your hands after every dirty job. It doesn’t matter if I’m cleaning fish, making duck nuggets, or working in the garden, I know that with a little bit of scrubbing and some Liquid Gold I’ll be clean in no time.

Post disaster I will save this Antimicrobial Soap for first aid tasks. It is also great for washing scrapes and cuts so they don’t get infected.

I just can’t wait to see how it works when I’m covered in zombie brains.

Honey

You can never have too much Honey stockpiled. The reason is simple. Honey can be stored forever, never goes bad, is calorie dense, and has medicinal usages. It really is a near perfect food.

Because of Honey’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties it has been used to treat illness and wounds since 3000BC in Egypt. When ingested it treats diarrhea and stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria. For external wounds, it can be applied directly to reduce swelling and reduce the chances of infection. It is believed that on top of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, the viscosity of the fluid over the wound acts as a physical barrier to contamination after the initial injury. It also ensures that whatever wound dressings don’t stick to the wound. That sounds odd, but the honey keeps the dressing from getting directly onto the wound, so you are less likely to rip open the wound when you are changing dressings.

In a survival situation Honey is basically the only burn treatment you are going to have. Event a moderate sized burn can be dangerous if you can’t get professional medical treatment. Honey can keep that wound covered and help the wounded survive until the skin can close, or you can get them better care. The big issue with moderate to large burns is the secondary infections that set in once the tissue under the skin is exposed. Honey keeps that tissue covered up.

Put all that together and you understand why I put so much Honey on the shelves at my Bolt Hole.

Bleeding Control Gauze Roll

I have to easy first choices for what to put in my Tactical Vest’s Medical Pouch. The first is this Bleeding Control Gauze Roll. The second is a Portable Tourniquet. When it comes to bleeds and trauma these two first aid items are critical to stabilizing the wounded until they can get more extensive care. A Tourniquet is great for extremity wounds but this Bleeding Control Gauze Roll is required to deal with other types of wounds. You are obviously not going to put a Tourniquet on a head wound for example.

Ever see a head wound bleed? Even a minor one? Head wounds bleed, which means that the injured person may be unable to see or move if it’s pouring over their eyes. With these Gauze Rolls, you can stop arterial bleeds on any body part and pack sever wounds to give the wounded a chance of surviving.

Make sure you check your Tactical Vest’s loadout every year and replace any supplies that are expiring in the next 12 months. If you need to use this Gauze you don’t want it to work sub optimally because it is expired. I don’t throw those packages away, I usually use them in my home or vehicle med kit as they still seem to function fine – I’m just making sure my Vest’s med kit has the best gear possible because if I’m strapping it on, some serious shite is going down.

Portable Tourniquets

In a survival situation, you can ignore some wounds, but not others. For those catastrophic injuries, these Portable Tourniquets are the last line of defense. If someone has an uncontrolled bleed or arterial blood is spraying having a Tourniquet may be the only thing that saves the person long enough to get more extensive care.

Having a Tourniquet on hand can mean the difference between life and death. If someone is bleeding out from an extremity (except for the head), a Tourniquet gives you time to stabilize the injured person and if hospitals are still open, get them to more help.

These Portable Tourniquets are one of the first things that I put in my Medical Pouch. Plan for the worst, and hope you never have to use them.

If the disaster turns out to be Zombies, you will be glad you have these Tourniquets on hand. If someone on your team gets bitten, your only hope is to lop off their limb and throw one of these Tourniquets in place, and then watch them carefully to make sure they don’t turn.

MOLLE Medical Pouch

This MOLLE Medical Pouch is the perfect way to keep your Medical Supplies organized. It is also a great way to make sure you have what you need when you need to pick up and run. Just remember this doesn’t come with the medical supplies. You still need to stock it up! I have two of these Pouches. One I keep on my Bug Out Vest and another I usually keep with my camping gear and or throw it in my vehicle for long road trips.

Liquid Bandage Spray

I always keep a bottle of Liquid Bandage Spray in Medical Pouch. It is perfect for small cuts and wounds. I’ve used Liquid Bandage Spray on everything from blisters on my hands from cutting wood to closing small cuts and scrapes from hiking. It is great for those areas that bandages just don’t fit on that well. Between my fingers and toes and on scraped elbows and knees. Water Purification Tablets

I first used Water Purification Tablets like these 40 years go. Yes, I feel old. When I was younger I did a lot of hiking on the Appalachian Trail and it wasn’t possible to carry a weekend’s worth, much less a week’s worth of water. That mean refilling canteens from streams and springs. I’ve seen what happens to people who don’t use Purification Tablets while camping, and when overseas. A buddy thought I was being paranoid when I would use these Purification Tablets on bottled water in India. Water we were buying from roadside stands and vendors while exploring the country. I suspected they would refill the bottles and put new caps on them. I opened them and threw a Purification Tablet in each. My buddy didn’t. That resulted in us having to stop so he could squat every half hour on the drive back? It was a very long six hour drive back to our hotel.

I keep a bottle of these Purification Tablets in my Medical Pouch as well as with my Camping Gear. Clean Water is critical for survival. That means having a multi layered strategy to make sure you have the Water you need to drink and cook with.

Plan for the worst. It’s really hard to fight for survival if your clenching your cheeks together because of diarrhea.

Emergency Laceration Closures

I love these Emergency Laceration Closures. They are quick and easy to use for cuts that would otherwise require stitches. The first time I used one was to close a wound on one of my kids that would have otherwise required stitches. It saved me a trip to the ER. That was important because we were in Mexico when he sliced his leg open with a fishing knife. I really didn’t want to leave the resort if we didn’t have to. Not because I didn’t want to take time off from the beach and water – but because the place was gated and had trucks with machine guns around it. Leaving the perceived security of the resort to visit a local hospital didn’t seem like a great idea. I’m sure their docs are awesome, but my med kit saved us a huge hassle. We did take him to a doctor when we get back to the states. The doc gave it a thumbs up and and we went home.

Obviously these aren’t going to help if you have a really big or deep wound. Or one that is spraying arterial blood. But…they can save the day for tons of other more minor lacerations and that is perfect for camping, hunting, and travel.

Post disaster these Emergency Laceration Closures will be even more important. There won’t be any hospitals to go to when you get cut. That makes them a critical part of your Medical Kit!

You never know when your going to need medical supplies, so I usually keep my med gear duplicated. One attached to my Tactical Vest, and another in my vehicle.

Comprehensive First Aid Kit

This Comprehensive First Aid Kit is the perfect kit for you and your friends. Make sure you can take care of those minor injuries safely! I like this kit because it is small enough to pack up or strap to a pack but has enough First Aid Gear to handle multiple small injuries. That makes it perfect for group hikes, cycling outings, or even just going out to play some backyard sports with your friends.

After a major disaster there are some supplies that will be worth their weight in gold. Water Filters will obviously be high on that list. Next will be Medical Supplies. Bottom line, you can not have enough First Aid Gear. I suggest planning as if everywhere you might be when a disaster happens is exactly where you will be. That means critical supplies in your vehicle, with your go bag, and more at your home and bolt hole. Practice Dressing – Stop The Bleeding

If you ever come face to face with a bad injury, you have to Stop The Bleeding. It is not easy to do. It requires a special person to be a medic. You have to be able to separate out the pain and get the job done.

This video is amazing and scary, but it is good training. You just have to keep packing until the bleeding stops. If you are interested in learning more about first aid I suggest taking a few classes. Having first aid skills will make you valuable in a disaster. Go take a few Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) classes. See if you have that special something it takes to be an EMT. You will learn real fast riding an ambulance if it is for you or not.

Obviously there are lots of different types of injuries, but if blood is spraying, you have to Stop the Bleeding first.

If you do seek out more training, you will likely get to practice on one of these Wound Packing Task Trainers. Of course the real thing is going to very different, but this is about as close as you can get without going into a bad neighborhood or a war zone.
