When it comes to kicking off a hike and staying comfortable for the long term I trust these Trail Shoes. They are comfortable, durable, and at around 14 Ounces I can keep them in my pack when Heavy Duty Boots are called for. Jerky Seasoning Kit

Being able to preserve food will be the defining skill that leaves some people starving, while others thrive. With this Jerky Seasoning Kit you can turn your game into Jerky and help keep it shelf stable for longer. That will be important when hunting provides your protein and a freezer is a luxury. Sure, you might be one of the few with enough solar to power a freezer, but for most of us that isn’t realistic. That means planning ahead so you can create tasty Jerky.

Each one of these kits can be used to make 20lbs of muscle meat. The yield drops a bit if you grind it, but I don’t plan on grinding, so it doesn’t matter to me. Most regular deer in my area net you about 60lbs of boneless meat. That makes the math super easy. if I want to convert a whole deer into jerky I need 3 Kits to get the job done.

Here is my recommendation on how to use. Don’t wait until the grocery stores are overrun and the shelves stripped bare. Start to practice cutting strips, and figuring out the right size/thickness of the cuts to make good Jerky now. Once you have that done, try to use a wood smoker/grill to get the same results. A dehydrator is awesome, but you may not have the power to run it after the Apocalypse.

Game Processor Kit

This Game Processor Kit has everything I need to butcher everything from deer to ducks. Which is why I have multiple sets. I have four total. I keep two with my hunting gear. One with my deer hunting kit, another with my duck kit. The final two are at my bolt hole, and my vehicle. This my sound odd, but one of the most used sets is actually the on in my vehicle. Why let a deer strike go to waist? I know lots of people who will eat fresh deer. It doesn’t matter if I shot it or it got hit by a truck on the highway. Just as long as it is a fresh kill.

When the power shuts off and the stores are empty, the only way to put meat on the table is to hunt. What good is hunting it though if you can’t butcher it and store it. Most people have no idea what it takes to have a successful hunt. But you might still get lucky and bag some game. Your ability to optimize that game comes down to the ability to process that game. Best of all, as long as you wear it, you never have to worry about it “running out of power”. You are literally winding its gears every time you move your arm!

Bushcraft Knife

The first time I held this Bushcraft Knife I fell in love with it. My buddy slapped his Knife into my hand and I knew I had to have one. The weight, and the feel in my hand was perfect. It was also raining and the fact that even with wet hands I never once thought I was going to lose my grip made this an easy choice. If you see me on the trail you will see this Bushcraft Knife on my belt.

I’ve used mine to shave kindling to start fires, process small game, and cut everything from ropes to clothing. A buddy fell and thought he’d broken his shin. We were a four hour hike from the nearest vehicle. I cut his pant leg off below the knee and thankfully there was no bone sticking out from the meat of his leg. I used this Knife and a rock to cut down two saplings and the rest of our group took turns dragging him back to our vehicles. One x-ray later and he was on crouches – but thankfully no permanent damage.

Pre disaster this Knife is a true multi tool. It holds an edge and is durable. You can’t go wrong putting it on your belt.

Post disaster this Knife is not just a multi tool but also a self defense tool. Knives don’t run out of ammo. They are quiet. If you need to defend yourself make sure you always have a last line of defense!

Gas Chainsaw

A good Gas Chainsaw can save you hours of work. I’ve learned my lesson with cheaper brands, although it did take a while. Four cheap chainsaws later and I finally bought one that will last, and which I trust to continue working for as long as I maintain it. I would have saved money in the long term if I’d just purchased a high quality Chainsaw to begin with. Give me a good chainsaw and some time and I can cut enough wood to last through the winter – or build palisade walls – or build a massive raft.

If you are planning on going four wheeling, or even just taking the road less traveled, having a Gas Chainsaw on your vehicle can mean the difference between quickly cutting up a fallen tree blocking your path – or being stuck there while you scout another path around.

High Definition Monocular

This is my third High Definition Monocular and so far the clear winner.

I’m fairly rough on my gear, so I’m likely the root cause of the first two getting broken. A year and a half in and this High Definition Monocular is still good to go. It has some scratches and dings, but the visual quality is still top tier. I take my Monocular on hikes, to the range, and generally anywhere I might want to get a better look at what is going on around me.

If you can see it coming, you have more time to decide on the best course of action. Sometimes that is just to get a camera out so I can get a good picture, and sometimes that is to get out of the way if a Momma Bear and cubs wants my place at my fishing spot.

During a natural disaster, or unnatural disaster like a zombie apocalypse, having the ability to see what’s coming will mean the difference between life and death.

Air Horn

This Air Horn is everything from a security device to a multi functional tool. It is a must have safety item for hikers and campers. Why? Because it doesn’t need cell service or rely on radio waves. Basically that means it works wherever you are.

My first bit of advice is that if you are out in the great outdoors with kids, or just people who don’t routinely adventure out into the wilderness, give each of them an Air Horn. It will scare off most wild creatures. But more importantly, it is an easy way to signal if they get lost. Make sure they know what to do. Stop moving. The only reason to move is to find water or shelter. Blow the horn every fifteen minutes. If they hear a return blast, reply. That will let the rescue party find you!

This Air Horn is also a great home defense tool. If someone is trying to break into your house or creeping around your camp site, guess what will get 9/10ths of those people running? You got it, a few blasts of an Air Horn will scare off most creepers. If you are anywhere near other people, it will get them up to help you as well. The other, sad reality, is that the people who don’t run off are likely there for bad reasons. So don’t hesitate if they keep coming. Once you confirm they are a threat, don’t hesitate to use as much force as needed to stop them.

I also keep an Air Horn in my vehicle. Want to flag down help? A few blasts of an Air Horn really gets people’s attention.

The other reason I love my Air Horn is my ability to set up harmless traps. Want to be alerted when someone comes through the woods at the back of your property? A few eye bolts, cables, and a little Air Horn configuration and you have a harmless alarm trap. It also has the bonus of scaring off most would be intruders.
