Cut Resistant Gloves

Cut Resistant Gloves are a key piece of gear if you do a lot of food prep. They are critical if you are butchering your own game! If you fish, hunt, and butcher your own game these Gloves are a must have. If they save you from one wound, they will pay for themselves ten times over. When it comes to surviving, these Gloves can make all the difference. If you cut yourself at your hunting camp, it’s going to ruin the whole trip. Emergency Food Rations

These Emergency Food Rations are perfect for your go bag, day pack, and hunting gear. Whenever I’m going hiking or hunting, I throw a pack of these Emergency Rations in my pack. Even if I’m not going to be more than a few miles from my vehicle. I’ve only had to use them once, but they made a huge difference. When it’s cold and snowy and you take a break to build a fire you will be glad you have a little something to put in your belly.

In cold weather, I keep these Emergency Food Rations in my pack for every trip. I don’t care if it’s a hike or just a trip across town to get gas. You never know when circumstances are going to leave you stranded. I’ve only been stranded a few times but having the gear to survive makes all the difference. What might be a scary situation turns into something much more manageable. Having the right gear makes all the difference.

Tree Stand

This Tree Stand is the perfect way to put food on your table. If you are looking for a high quality Climbing Stand this is the piece of gear for you. It is light enough to carry anywhere so you can go off the beaten path or just carry it to your favorite spot. I keep a Folding Saw strapped to mine so when I go up a new tree I can clean up any small limbs that need to be trimmed.

So why is this in the Food & Cooking Category? I don’t hunt anything I’m not going to eat. That is true now and it will be true forever. Having the ability to provide food post disaster is going to be a key survival skill. When the grocery stores are empty are you going to be eating or starving?

Neck Warmer

When the wind is blowing this Neck Warmer makes all the difference between feeling that chill down to my bones versus staying warm and comfy. I do a lot of walking, and try not to let the weather stop me, rain, shine, hot, or cold. When it comes to cold, this Neck Warmer is a must have piece of Cold Weather Survival Gear. I’ve been on hikes where this Warmer was the only thing that let me keep on the move. The wind was just howling and while I was bundled up, the Warmer is what kept me from having frostbite on my neck and face. When the wind is so cold it burns, you will be glad you have this Warmer.

In a real disaster social norms are going to disintegrate. When the weather is cold these Warmers let your survival group hide their faces. That is helpful on a couple of levels. The first is that it keeps you warm. The second is that it lets you hide your face. It’s hard for someone to track you or spread rumors if they don’t actually know who they met on the trail. The third is that it hides details you may not want potential adversaries to have. How many teens and young women do you have in your group? Those seem like minor details now but post major disaster the scavengers will want to target weak groups who may also have people who meet a specific demographic. Waterproof /Windproof Rain Pants

When the wind picks up the weather turns foul you will be glad you have these Waterproof /Windproof Rain Pants. There is nothing worse than hiking in wet weather without Rain Pants. Your upper body is nice and dry but your legs get soaked. My Columbia Jacket is awesome but it just sheds all the water onto my legs in the rain. Thankfully you can just keep these Rain Pants in your bag and when the weather turns nasty you can slip them on. These Rain Pants will both keep you dry and keep the wind from biting into you. Even in warm weather a cold rain can sap your strength if you are not careful.

Besides the obvious use when its raining, these Waterproof /Windproof Rain Pants are also awesome after it stops. If you are hiking through wet vegetation you don’t have to worry about getting soaked from transfer. I also wear them in leech country. I keep a few rubber bands in my bag to synch around my ankles and I’m good to go.

These Rain Pants are also great at cutting through the wind. Even when its warm, if the wind is whipping, it is easy to catch a chill. That makes these Rain Pants an important bit of Wet Weather Gear.

Titanium Pot Backpacking Mug

I have cooked so many meals in this Titanium Pot Backpacking Mug. It is the perfect size for me to make a one pot meal in and light enough that I can take it anywhere. Need to boil water? Not a problem. Want to make a huge cup of coffee? This 900ml Mug has you covered. This Pot/Mug hits that perfect goldilocks zone of size. It is big enough to make something for two, but its also perfect if you are just cooking for yourself. It has a lid and a carry bag so you can strap it to the outside of your pack if you are tight on space. If you are weighing every ounce, or just want a piece of gear that will last forever, choosing this Titanium Mug is easy.

I am a huge fan of Valtcan gear. I’ve had a few flasks over the years and they all eventually resulted in some alteration of whatever I put in them, but the Valtcan flask is non reactive as its Titanium. They make quality products, which is why I was so excited to purchase this Titanium Pot Backpacking Mug. It is perfect for its designed use – which is heating up and then drinking fluids, soups, food while camping and hiking. However, it is also freezing cold out, and I keep one in my vehicle stuffed with a bit of fire starter gear – because if my family or myself get stuck out on the highway in the snow, we will be able to start a fire, and heat up some water at the very least.

The best part of these 9-Hour Candles is they ever run out of batteries. I can throw them on a shelf, in a pack, or even store them in my vehicle as long as its not too ridiculously hot, and that means I’ll always have a source of light and a little bit of heat when I need it. That means if I get snowed in while trying to drive to my cabin I can actually heat the cab, and have light to see by. All because I was smart enough to plan ahead!

The electric grid is going to be one of the first major infrastructure items to go out in a disaster. Recurve Bow

This Recurve Bow is both fun to shoot and a great way to put food your table. Yes, I know I could have picked a compound bow, but I just prefer the Recurve design. Let the arguments begin. When it comes to survival I like a Recurve over a compound bow as it has less moving parts, and I can unstring them for long term storage or to make transporting them easier.

Sure, a compound bow may have extended range, but they also take more experience to use in my opinion. It is much easier for new shooters to pick up a Recurve Bow and be semi effective when compared to a compound bow.

When it comes to quickly and quietly taking down the game and other threats, nothing beats a good Bow.

Recurve Bow

This Bow can have a moderate impact on your survival. It scores a 365/1000.

There are two reasons it ranks below the Mossy Oak Crossbow. The first is that it takes more room to use. It’s hard to lie in cover and shoot a Bow. There is also a limit to how long you can hold a bow string at the ready. Eventually you will get tried and have to let the tension go. The second reason is the skill it takes to fire. A skilled archer can put an arrow wherever he wants – but that skill is hard to come by. A Crossbow on the other hand can be mounted with a scope and takes much less skill to use. That gives it a higher ranking compared to this Bow.

Don’t let the number fool you. Being on the list of top thousand survival gear items is a big deal. Just being on the list makes this critical gear.

Mossy Oak Crossbow

This Mossy Oak Crossbow is perfect for taking game and putting it on your table. It is sized to fit everyone and has the safety features you want like the anti dry fire system and finger safety reminders. These make sure you know if your fingers are going to be in line with bow string – which would be bad for obvious reasons. Because this is a Crossbow it obviously doesn’t have recoil like a rifle, making it perfect for smaller hunters. It is also quiet, so if you want to set up a safe shooting range you don’t have to worry about bothering your neighbors to train.

When it comes to surviving a disaster, this Mossy Oak Crossbow gives me tons of options. The obvious is that I can put food on my table. The less obvious is that it is a quiet way to take care of danger without alerting everything around you to what’s going on. If you are functioning on your own or with a small group that might be a key survival ability. Remove the threat in your path and escape before every other scavenger around you realizes where you are.

Fire Starters

Fire Starters are a basic supply. Sometimes the wood is a little wet or you just want to get the fire going quickly. That is when these Fire Starters are your best friend. I’ve used them in the pouring rain with very little cover, and was still able to get a nice blaze going. If you are cold and wet these Fire Starters are your best friend.

I keep a Fire Starter or three in my Backpack for hiking and several more with my hunting gear.
