Ballistic Goggles

I keep a pair of Ballistic Goggles clipped to my Bug Out Tactical Vest. I have another set I keep with my shooting gear. When I’m shooting at my buddy’s farm I like to wear them to target shoot and step through the different stations. You have to wear the gear you plan on using in a survival situation. Don’t wait until your life depends on it to figure out how they fit and change your sight picture when picking targets.

Pre disaster these Ballistic Goggles are perfect to protect you from flying brass at the range. Better yet you can use them for airsoft. Airsoft is a great way to practice moving and shooting, and also teaches you exactly how silly most action movies are. If you are in the open or any part of your body is exposed – it is going to get hit.

During and post disaster these Ballistic Goggles will become a second skin. You can’t afford an eye injury that impacts your ability to see. Your survival quite literally depends on it. If scavengers or other survivors try to take what you have there will be rounds flying. That means shattered glass, chunks of drywall, and splinters of wood flying through the air. Not to mention fragments of concrete and lead.

Don’t end up dead because you get blinded and can’t effectively defend yourself anymore.

Liquid Bandage Spray

I always keep a bottle of Liquid Bandage Spray in Medical Pouch. It is perfect for small cuts and wounds. I’ve used Liquid Bandage Spray on everything from blisters on my hands from cutting wood to closing small cuts and scrapes from hiking. It is great for those areas that bandages just don’t fit on that well. Between my fingers and toes and on scraped elbows and knees. This Bandage Spray seals out water and germs to help your wounds heal faster and reduce the risk of infection.

When I’m out and about in the wild, or just travelling for vacation, I always keep a bottle of this Bandage Spray in one of my bags. My kids are adults now, but I have a lot of nieces and nephews. Whenever there are kids about, there are scrapes and cuts. It is just a fact of life. My family knows that when there are wounded, they yell medic and I come running.

Pocket Window Punch

I have three of these Pocket Window Punches. Why? Because they are a key survival tool to get through safety glass. One of them is clipped to my Tactical Vest. Obviously if I need to get into or out of a vehicle, this Window Punch makes the job quick and easy. Just push the device against the window until the sprint pops and the window shatters. That makes vehicle rescues, when every moment counts, much faster.

I keep another Window Punch in my vehicle for emergency use. If I need to save a kid or a dog inside a hot car, I’m ready.

Post disaster the roads are going to be full of cars that are bogged down and can’t go anywhere. Those vehicles are a great source for scavenging gear after the die off. This Window Punch means I can do that scavenging quickly and with minimal noise. That is important when you don’t know who or what might be listening.

Be ready, be prepared, and if you survive the Apocalypse maybe we can have a drink after we bump into each other on the road.

Water Purification Tablets

I first used Water Purification Tablets like these 40 years go. Yes, I feel old. When I was younger I did a lot of hiking on the Appalachian Trail and it wasn’t possible to carry a weekend’s worth, much less a week’s worth of water. That mean refilling canteens from streams and springs. I’ve seen what happens to people who don’t use Purification Tablets while camping, and when overseas. A buddy thought I was being paranoid when I would use these Purification Tablets on bottled water in India. Water we were buying from roadside stands and vendors while exploring the country. I suspected they would refill the bottles and put new caps on them. I opened them and threw a Purification Tablet in each. My buddy didn’t. That resulted in us having to stop so he could squat every half hour on the drive back? It was a very long six hour drive back to our hotel.

I keep a bottle of these Purification Tablets in my Medical Pouch as well as with my Camping Gear. Clean Water is critical for survival. That means having a multi layered strategy to make sure you have the Water you need to drink and cook with.

Plan for the worst. It’s really hard to fight for survival if your clenching your cheeks together because of diarrhea.

Emergency Blanket

I don’t care if its winter, spring, fall or summer, I have an Emergency Blanket in my pack. I’ve been stuck in cold rain showers in the heat of summer that have left me shivering with blue lips. Without an Emergency Blanket I would have suffered and have a severely reduced ability to move once the rain stopped. Even in warm weather it is possible to get hypothermia. In any other season, and this Emergency Blanket becomes a true must have survival item. In cold weather, having this Emergency Blanket can mean the difference between freezing to death and surviving another day.

I also love how this Blanket is double sided. If I’m freezing to death and waiting for a rescue, the silver reflective side is going to be showing. I keep one with my camping gear, hunting gear, and another in my Vehicle in case I’m the one making the rescue.

On the other hand – if I’m freezing but hiding from scavengers I can wrap myself up and have the olive green or black side exposed to help me stay hidden.

I love the versatility every Compact Water-Resistant EDC Pouch give me. I have several Tactical Vests that are loaded out with different gear. These EDC Pouches are key to setting them up with different types of gear. I have one that is set up for medical rescue. Another that is built around close quarters and hand guns. Emergency Laceration Closures

I love these Emergency Laceration Closures. They are quick and easy to use for cuts that would otherwise require stitches. The first time I used one was to close a wound on one of my kids that would have otherwise required stitches. It saved me a trip to the ER. That was important because we were in Mexico when he sliced his leg open with a fishing knife. I really didn’t want to leave the resort if we didn’t have to. Not because I didn’t want to take time off from the beach and water – but because the place was gated and had trucks with machine guns around it. Leaving the perceived security of the resort to visit a local hospital didn’t seem like a great idea. I’m sure their docs are awesome, but my med kit saved us a huge hassle. We did take him to a doctor when we get back to the states. The doc gave it a thumbs up and and we went home.

Obviously these aren’t going to help if you have a really big or deep wound. Or one that is spraying arterial blood. But…they can save the day for tons of other more minor lacerations and that is perfect for camping, hunting, and travel.

Post disaster these Emergency Laceration Closures will be even more important. There won’t be any hospitals to go to when you get cut. That makes them a critical part of your Medical Kit!

You never know when your going to need medical supplies, so I usually keep my med gear duplicated. One attached to my Tactical Vest, and another in my vehicle.

Waterproof Maps

Waterproof Maps are a critical survival item. Buy at least two sets. One goes in your Bug Out Bag and the other gets stored at your bolt whole or survival cache. Of course you should buy local maps. I don’t know where you live. For me that means Waterproof Maps of the regions around the Appalachian Trail.

Don’t take anything for granted. Be prepared. Pick a destination and then use your Map to figure out if you can get from point A to point B. Don’t wait until things get bad and you are running for your life to figure out you don’t really know how to get to your rally point or bolt hole. GPS is great, but there is no guarantee the GPS satellites will be up?

Survival Whistle

These Survival Whistles are a must have for every member of your group. They are hands down the most cost effective and easy to use survival tool. I don’t go camping, hiking, or hunting without having a Survival Whistle on me. They are lightweight, and provide an excellent insurance policy if I get lost or incapacitated and need to let searchers know where I am. If I’m with my buddies and I get turned about in the woods, we all know that two short blasts means to reply in kind. It allows both parties to figure out what direction to move in.

Pre disaster these Whistles are a must have for outside activities. They are such an easy and simple insurance policy it doesn’t make sense not to have one for everyone. I keep a spare with my medical kit as well.

Post Apocalypse, these Whistles are perfect to give to survivors as an emergency communication mechanism.

If its a Zombie Apocalypse and you are cornered, climb a tree, got up as high as you can, and blow the whistle every few minutes. It will attract even more Zombies, but that is the price to pay for letting me know where you are. I’ll take care of the Zombies when I get there.

Paracord

Paracord is incredibly useful. It is in the same class of usefulness as Duct Tape. I keep one of these 100 foot sections in my vehicle at all times. Same with my hiking and camping gear. Why? Because I’ve used Paracord to secure loads, tie down a buddies trunk when the latch broke, and even make a splint. One of my favorite uses was with a young lady I met in college. I’d tell you the details but it was before I was married and the story might just get me killed. She watches a lot of murder TV. She’s also told me she does not believe in divorce.

All I need is this Paracord, my Kershaw Knife, and a pole arm and I’ve got a spear to hunt or defend myself. When it comes to killing Zombies, being able to do it from an arms length away is always a good idea.

Broken shoelaces? No problems.

Need to make an emergency splint? No problems.

Repair a pack? No problems.

The list could go on and on but I think you get the idea.
