Portable Tourniquets

In a survival situation, you can ignore some wounds, but not others. For those catastrophic injuries, these Portable Tourniquets are the last line of defense. If someone has an uncontrolled bleed or arterial blood is spraying having a Tourniquet may be the only thing that saves the person long enough to get more extensive care.

Ballistic Goggles

I keep a pair of Ballistic Goggles clipped to my Bug Out Tactical Vest. I have another set I keep with my shooting gear. When I’m shooting at my buddy’s farm I like to wear them to target shoot and step through the different stations. You have to wear the gear you plan on using in a survival situation. Don’t wait until your life depends on it to figure out how they fit and change your sight picture when picking targets.

Pre disaster these Ballistic Goggles are perfect to protect you from flying brass at the range. Better yet you can use them for airsoft. Airsoft is a great way to practice moving and shooting, and also teaches you exactly how silly most action movies are. If you are in the open or any part of your body is exposed – it is going to get hit.

During and post disaster these Ballistic Goggles will become a second skin. You can’t afford an eye injury that impacts your ability to see. Your survival quite literally depends on it. If scavengers or other survivors try to take what you have there will be rounds flying. That means shattered glass, chunks of drywall, and splinters of wood flying through the air. Liquid Bandage Spray

Pocket Window Punch

I have three of these Pocket Window Punches. Why? Because they are a key survival tool to get through safety glass. One of them is clipped to my Tactical Vest. Obviously if I need to get into or out of a vehicle, this Window Punch makes the job quick and easy. Just push the device against the window until the sprint pops and the window shatters. Water Purification Tablets

I first used Water Purification Tablets like these 40 years go. Yes, I feel old. When I was younger I did a lot of hiking on the Appalachian Trail and it wasn’t possible to carry a weekend’s worth, much less a week’s worth of water. That mean refilling canteens from streams and springs. I’ve seen what happens to people who don’t use Purification Tablets while camping, and when overseas. A buddy thought I was being paranoid when I would use these Purification Tablets on bottled water in India. Water we were buying from roadside stands and vendors while exploring the country. I suspected they would refill the bottles and put new caps on them. I opened them and threw a Purification Tablet in each. My buddy didn’t. That resulted in us having to stop so he could squat every half hour on the drive back? It was a very long six hour drive back to our hotel.

I keep a bottle of these Purification Tablets in my Medical Pouch as well as with my Camping Gear. Clean Water is critical for survival. That means having a multi layered strategy to make sure you have the Water you need to drink and cook with.

Plan for the worst. It’s really hard to fight for survival if your clenching your cheeks together because of diarrhea.

Emergency Blanket

I don’t care if its winter, spring, fall or summer, I have an Emergency Blanket in my pack. I’ve been stuck in cold rain showers in the heat of summer that have left me shivering with blue lips. Without an Emergency Blanket I would have suffered and have a severely reduced ability to move once the rain stopped. Even in warm weather it is possible to get hypothermia. In any other season, and this Emergency Blanket becomes a true must have survival item. In cold weather, having this Emergency Blanket can mean the difference between freezing to death and surviving another day.

Emergency Laceration Closures

I love these Emergency Laceration Closures. They are quick and easy to use for cuts that would otherwise require stitches. The first time I used one was to close a wound on one of my kids that would have otherwise required stitches. It saved me a trip to the ER. That was important because we were in Mexico when he sliced his leg open with a fishing knife. I really didn’t want to leave the resort if we didn’t have to. Not because I didn’t want to take time off from the beach and water – but because the place was gated and had trucks with machine guns around it. Leaving the perceived security of the resort to visit a local hospital didn’t seem like a great idea. I’m sure their docs are awesome, but my med kit saved us a huge hassle. We did take him to a doctor when we get back to the states. The doc gave it a thumbs up and and we went home.

Obviously these aren’t going to help if you have a really big or deep wound. Or one that is spraying arterial blood. But…they can save the day for tons of other more minor lacerations and that is perfect for camping, hunting, and travel.

Waterproof Maps

Waterproof Maps are a critical survival item. Buy at least two sets. One goes in your Bug Out Bag and the other gets stored at your bolt whole or survival cache. Of course you should buy local maps. I don’t know where you live. For me that means Waterproof Maps of the regions around the Appalachian Trail.

Don’t take anything for granted. Be prepared. Pick a destination and then use your Map to figure out if you can get from point A to point B. Don’t wait until things get bad and you are running for your life to figure out you don’t really know how to get to your rally point or bolt hole. GPS is great, but there is no guarantee the GPS satellites will be up?
