The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 8

The Sky Is a Graveyard finds Silas tied up outside. Is he prone to violence? The rest of the team struggles to decide what to do with him. He was found passed out in a room with a body. Worse, his wrench was covered in blood. Did he kill Percy and Percy’s Uncle? Percy’s Uncle had his head bashed in and Percy is missing. Silas remains tied up outside while the survivors struggle with what to do next.

Silas on Lock Down

Things don’t get any better for Silas after they search his bad and find Iris’s drawings she’d thrown away before they started their journey. Is Silas fixated on Iris? Did Silas kill Percy and his uncle out of jealousy?

Flashbacks

As the team tries to figure out what to do with Silas he has flashbacks. We see what happened in his house when he was younger. Silas’s father was abusive, beating his mother and him alike. The question is, did Silas kill them both? What actually happened? When Silas sparred with his father he must have killed him. When Silas goes upstairs in the flashback he finds his father has turned. Silas then flees to his room only to be forced to kill his father a second time after his mother comes home and is attacked.

Family

Silas is suffering in his own hell as the rest of the group takes sides. Hope is ready to convict Silas while Huck is ready to leave him chained up when they walk away. Iris and Elton don’t quite buy it though, believing that Silas wouldn’t have hurt anyone without cause.

Silas is suffering, and when a walker is coming for him he seems at peace, ready to let it end. He’s is only saved because Hope comes out in time to spear the Zombie.

Silas Facing Death

Morning

The next morning Iris goes out to talk to Silas, to ask him what happened. He reveals he got out of his restraints, but he stayed to talk to her. He doesn’t really remember what happened, all he remembers is anger.

After Silas leaves, Elton decides that he has to follow him. He thinks that Silas will have a better chance at surviving if he has someone to watch his back. Elton tells Hope that he’s going to find Silas, then his mother. This brings Hope to tell him the truth, that she killed his pregnant mother.

Silas and Elton move off, each of them on a different path for the moment.

The Sky Is a Graveyard ends with Huck revealing that she’s Elizabeth’s daughter when her mother hands her a watch, and Huck asks if it was Dads’? Huck then confirms that the package is safe, and she only has 48 before the rest of the survivors come looking for. They have to debrief fast so she can get to the other survivors. Who is the package? Is it Hope or Iris?

The Sky Is a Graveyard Scoring

It took eight episodes for me to have that moment where I’m actually curious to see what happens next episode. In the end, it wasn’t enough to save the full episode. There is a ton of dialogue without much depth, which is why the episode scored a 62/100,. This makes it an episode you should save for a Rainy Day.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 13

Adiós, Muchachos picks up pretty much where Party with the Zeros left off. Vasquez is about to get a bullet before Dr. Kurian is instructed to test his serum. Only, La Reina makes Dr. Kurian stop and test it on himself instead.

Vasquez on the verge of being a zombie serum test subject.

Why? I don’t really know, but it does save Vasquez for the short term as La Reina grows excited as Dr. Kurian survives getting bitten by a Zombie in a box.

Zombie In A Box

With proof in the biting that Dr. Kurian didn’t turn, La Reina has her inner circle and multiple other Zeros injected with the serum. Only, its not a Zombie Vaccine, its just enough of Murphy’s blood to turn the humans so he can control them.

What could go wrong?

Murphy at least had the good grace not to let his core team of companions get injected, which is a good thing, because as the serum takes hold, those injected aren’t just susceptible to Murphy’s mind control, but they slowly turn and appear to hunger for a bit of Murphy directly.

Murphy Snacks

With the Zeros turning on Murphy the team rescues Vasquez before fleeing the compound by releasing the horde of Undead the Zeros keep for composting. Once free of the lower levels Vasquez finally gets what he came for, revenge on the Escorpion for killing his wife and daughter.

Team Murphy then raid the Zeros garage and head out in an assortment of new wheels.

New Wheels

Adiós, Muchachos Scoring

Adiós, Muchachos scored a 69/100 putting it in Save For A Rainy Day territory. There is a lot of drama and politics, but not so much action. Still, it was a fun episode.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 12

Party with the Zeros is the first of a two part story.

The episode has a strong start. There is a nice zombie fight scene that lasts a few minutes. Including a very nice “doorway clearing”.

That is then followed by a nice run and gun sequence. The run and gun sequence eventually leads to Team Murphy being saved by the Zeros.

I would describe Party with the Zeros as a set up to the 2nd part. After the initial action, the episode becomes a story about Vasquez. We learn why he wants revenge against the Zeros so badly. They killed his family. Meanwhile Murphy is forced to “work” with the Dr. Walter Kurian, aka, Dr. Death. Dr. Kurian is apparently stringing along the leaders of the Zeros, promising a cure.

While in the heart of the Zeros headquarters Vasquez tries to kill Hector Alvarez, aka “Escorpion” for what he did to his wife, but Warren stops him, gaining the trust of the Zeros.

The episode ends with Vasquez about to get a bullet in the brain.

Party with the Zeros Scoring

I’m giving Party with the Zeros a 64 as after the initial action it slows down and set up the cliffhanger ending, putting it in Rainy Day territory.

See how all Zombie Series rank!

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 11, Corporate

Corporate Retreat has one of the most awesome opening scenes ever. This is just a kick *ss few moments of Zombie Violence. I loved the segment where 10K covers Doc and a through and through shot bounces off Doc’s necklace to kill another zombie.

10K kicking some serious *ss

Outside the smoke is thick and so are the Z’s. Once Team Murphy makes it to the hotel they find themselves in the midst of a work retreat. The survivors left in the hotel were there for a conference. They’ve been stuck in the hotel with a self help corporate guru since the Zombie Apocalypse started.

Team Murphy

Shortly after Team Murphy has joined the survivors in the hotel there is a shooting. Murphy and another hotel guest have been shot. To make things worse, the bullet went through Murphy. This means the wounded hotel guest is now on the same path as Cassandra.

This leads to a crazy “trust circle” scene. The hotel guests and Team Murphy pass along a didgeridoo to decide who gets to talk.

After the initial “trust circle” kicks out one of the hotel guests to face the Z’s in the smoke, Doc explains how he’s been feeding the wounded man Murphy’s blood. You have to love Doc.

As Warren discusses the situation with the Corporate Retreat Leader they wander down to the kitchen to find that there is a Z in the deep freezer.

Surprise Freezer Zombie

Know what happens when Z’s are around? People get bit, and then you have more Z’s. Good thing 10K and Vasquez are both good shots. Otherwise the Corporate Retreat Guests may have lost more than they did.

Shots

Shots are heard close by and the team rushes in to find that Doc has been shot at while he cared for Murphy. The stash of food was stolen.

The team splits up to search the hotel. This leads to Addy and one of the female guests, Dana, being alone together. The woman seems to know something about what’s going on. She’s anxious and begs Addy to take her with her when they leave. As the two are hiding, Warren and Vasquez come in and clear the room.

Closet Time WIth Addy

As Dana and Addy spill out of the closet I love Warren’s “Everything all right?” comment. There is just something about the drawl that says so much more than the words.

The moment is then shattered as whoever stole the food makes some noise. All the attention gets drawn back to the main lobby. Vasquez and Warren charge in and find themselves face to face with the Corporate Retreat Leader. He asks them if they caught the thief?

Yes, I thought his sudden appearance was suspicious as well.

As the survivors sit in lobby, trying to make sense of everything that’s happening we get a moment where Addy and Dana are looking at each other across the room. Clearly they have a connection.

Glory Hole

Out in the lobby the situation isn’t so good. The horde seems attracted to the hotel, and some of them are starting to break through. This leads to a wonderful Glory Hole kill.

Glory Hole Kill

Lots of bad things happen after that. The Z’s already trapped in the hotel break free of their quarantine wing. Then the glass in the lobby shatters. Everyone flees into the kitchen where Doc is performing medical experiments with his two patients. The stress and anxiety turns the survivors into a bickering mass of name calling until Warren puts her foot down.

It’s time to find out who the killer is.

Doc has been giving the wounded hotel guest Murphy blood, all so he can ask the now Zombie Guest who shot him. It wasn’t the Corporate Retreat Leader after all, but Dana’s hotel beau instead, who wants Dana to leave with them. The look on Addy’s face is shock and pain. At least Dana had the good grace to say she never wanted anyone to get hurt. Well Dana, Addy got hurt! (And some people where shot and killed, but Addy got hurt!!!)

Revenge is taken however as the Zombie Guest takes Doc’s gun and kills the grocery thief, then gets shot in return.

Wrap Up

This is just about when Murphy wakes up from his concussion and the story quickly wrap up. With Murphy awake the zombies are released from whatever was pulling them to the hotel, and Ziggy ends up back at the door, covered in gore. They thought he was the killer originally and exiled him, but he did just fine with his hammer.

Iggy Returns

The Corporate Retreat Leader pays for his decision by getting his head crushed with his talking stick. Good for you Iggy!

Corporate Retreat ends with a little bit of a heartache.

Addy and Dana Say Goodbye

There is clearly longing here for Addy, but she doesn’t really trust Dana for good reason, but still, you can’t just force a feeling to stop. They say their goodbyes, and they both hope they get to see each other again. Sadly, there was no kiss. Come on, be brave, show a peck on the lips or a hug, right? Then Addy climbs into the van to find all eyes on her.

Corporate Retreat Scoring

Corporate Retreat scored an 85/100. It opened with some solid action and then kept the pace and mystery up throughout, making it Worth Your Time.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 10

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon finds the team cruising along the highway in Nevada when Citizen Z makes contact.

Citizen Z: “Well people. If we weren’t already in an apocalypse, this would be a damn obvious sign. What do you call something worse than an apocalypse? Because this is it. Whatever it is. Swarm. Horde. Zunami. There is no end in sight.”

Zunami

Unfortunately for Team Murphy, their RV breaks down, leaving them searching for help or a replacement. Doc and 10K end up being taken captive by Native Americans while Murphy, Warren, and Vasquez end up at a Native American casino.

While the team works through their issues with Native American hosts, trying to get them to believe a massive horde is coming, Citizen Z is dealing with one of the remaining fast zombies at Camp Northern Light. This leads to what for me was clearly the Best Zombie Kill of the episode.

After asking Warren for help to use a rocket, Citizen Z makes an epic kill with an anti tank weapon. And yes, the battery unit was down his pants so he could warm it up enough to make the shot.

Anti Tank Zombie Shot

Things are looking pretty grim for Team Murphy and their new Native Americans friends (after a rough start). There is a massive Zunami coming, and it is going to swarm everything in its path.

The episode ends with Warren telling Murphy he’s going to have to pick a world to live in, and to remember that the humans are trying to save him, while the zombies are trying to eat him.

Thankfully Doc is a genius and looking at a cave paining of buffalo and it reminds him of how the Native Americans hunted in ages past.

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon Scoring

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon becomes a staple comment in future episodes across multiple seasons and it was a fun episode that scored a 72/100.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 9

Rozwell takes place in Roswell New Mexico, the home of the Roswell UFO incident in the summer of 1947. Some things never change.

Rozwell starts with a bang. A pretty young lady is being chased by a zombie until she’s saved by a mysterious flying object we don’t quite see, but we do see its capabilities. The flying object takes care of the Zombie while leaving the young lady unharmed.

UFO Taking Out A Zombie

Team Murphy isn’t far off and they have there own experience with the UFO before it disappears in a flash. A little ways down the road Team Murphy finds a diner full of survivors who are UFO believers. Hard core believers. Our blond friend from the first few moments of Rozwell is their leader, and after a bit of discussion and prompting from 10K, she agrees to take Team Murphy to the nearby military based.

On the way to the base the team sees the remnants of Zombies, as well as the “Triangle Zombie”. Something other than normal is definitely going on.

Triangle Zombie

Once at the base the team is treated to a fun elevator ride as they descend into the secret subterranean military base. The team encounters technology that shouldn’t exist, as well as armored beings that are nearly bullet proof. Nearly, but not quite.

In the end we find out that twisted love is to blame for a lot what is going on in Rozwell. Team Murphy moves on while our blond friend in charge of the UFO worshipers decides to continue her journey, regardless of the truth.

Rozwell Scoring

Rozwell  scored a 69/100, putting it just 1 point away from Worth Your Time territory. The UFO stuff was fun, but I do like me a little more classic Zombie killing as well.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 8

The Collector starts with Team Murphy stranded on the roads, and running low on supplies. No food, no water, and very little ammunition. It’s so bad that Doc and Murphy go to scavenge edible plants.

The only problem is that Murphy isn’t quite so interested in a salad.

Brains!!!

Murphy is giving into his Zombie side, and is hungry for brains. The hunger is so strong that he doesn’t even see the trap that a brain tied to a tree limb might be. He ends up falling through a trap door, where he meets a Zombie who fell for the same trap. The Zombie he’s trapped with has some brains, and when Murphy takes just a small taste the shock is visible. It looked like a drug addict getting a hit after a long dry spell.

Once trapped, the team starts to look for him, and Murphy almost gets lobotomized before his captor, The Collector, realizes that Murphy isn’t some regular Zombie, no The Collector  has heard Citizen Z and knows exactly who and what Murphy is.

Zombie Film Movie History Lesson

We get a fun history Zombie Movies from The Collector and get a funny line from Murphy when he says, “I am not what you’d call a hard core fan of the genre.”

The Collector Scoring

The Collector scores a 63/100 putting it in Rainy Day Territory. It’s not a bad episode and we do learn some interesting things about how Murphy is changing, but its also a little slow without a lot of action.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 7

Down the Mississippi introduces us to the Dentists. Only, they aren’t the good natured dentation fairies they pretend to be. No, they just want to get you strapped into a chair so they can add you to their collection. Why? Well, we’ll find out in a little bit.

Murderous Dentists

Team Murphy meanwhile finds themselves on the Mississippi after commandeering a pontoon boat. They don’t get far before they come across some old friends, Sketchy, and Skeezy.

Sketchy and Skeezy

Those of you who are Z Nation fans will know that Addy’s Z Whacker was purchased from Sketchy. That happened way back in the very first episode, Puppies and Kittens. That kind of makes them family don’t you think?

Zombie Log Jam

Things quickly go south after Team Murphy picks up Skeezy and Sketchy. Skeezy tried to warn them, but not one wants to listen. At least until they are in the midst of a Zombie Jam.

Zombie Jam

With Zombies warming the boat the team is forced to go overboard, and in the process they get seperated.

Sketchy, Skeezy, and 10K end up on one side of the river while the rest of Team Murphy finds themselves on the other. This episode really shows Doc’s character. The others were willing to move on, but 10K is Doc’s friend, and Doc isn’t willing to just leave him behind.

Skeezy, Sketchy, and 10K have a few small adventures culminating with them stealing the empty Dentists vehicle while the drivers are in the woods doing their business. They end driving into a freaky town that uses Zombies as a power source.

This brings the Zero’s into the picture, because when they show up with the Dentists in tow, we realize the whole place is really just a Gangster profit generating tool, and they aren’t pleased that their Zombie Dentist truck was stollen.

Down the Mississippi Scoring

Team 10K is about to get hung for their crimes against the Zero Cartel when Team Murphy whos up with Doc to save their butts. This was a fun, silly episode that focused more on character development than Zombies, but it was so well done it scored an 87/100.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 6

The team is in Springfield, Illinois, and things aren’t good. Zombie Baby Daddy starts with the team surrounded. The only thing left to do is to kick some Zombie ass. This fight also confirms a few things we learned from last episode, Zombaby. The Zombies are attracted to Lucy, and Murphy’s power over them doesn’t work when they are locked on her.

This leads to several awesome Zombie Kills in the first three minutes of the episode.

First we see 10K using gears as sling shot projectiles…

Followed up by Warren with some slick machete work…

A Lot Of Lincolns

Doc also has a brief moment where he’s not sure if he’s having a bad trip when he comes fact to face with a bus full of Abraham Lincolns. I love Doc and the fun he brings to every episode.

After the team takes care of the immediate Zombie threat they flee into the woods. Team Warren finds itself with two objectives. The first is for Warren to track down Vasquez. Meanwhile Addy, 10K, and Doc try to assess whether Lucy is going to become a threat, or a savior as she grows.

Addy, Doc, and 10K’s attempts to get Murphy to let them hold the baby only spooks Murphy. This forces him deeper into the woods, where Lucy’s Zombie attractive powers brings out a few Zombified woodland critters.

Zombie Critters

The Zombie critters end up chasing Murphy deeper into the woods. This leads him to a small homestead protected by a man and woman. Murphy realizes he can’t take care of Lucy with everyone so focused on her, so he does what every Zombie Dad would do. He makes two zombie slaves to take care of his baby.

Zombie Baby Sitters

While Murphy is taking care of his child care situation, Warren and Vasquez are forced to fight for their lives, all while Vasquez reveals how was originally a federal agent before he was compromised by the cartels, and both Warren and Vasquez get to do some surgery on the other. They both make it, but everyone else isn’t so lucky.

Cassandra is blindly loyal to Murphy, and in the process of trying to protect her maker, she hurts Addy, then pushes 10K too far. He’s forced to protect himself, or die, and in the end, it costs Cassandra her life.

Doc tries his best to make 10K feel better, but 10K had feelings for her, which makes her death even harder to deal with. She was 10K’s 3255th kill, and Murphy is pissed, but Warren keeps things from devolving into a fist fight.

Team Murphy has to continue on, for humanities sake.

Zombie Baby Daddy Scoring

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 7

Truth or Dare begins with Huck, played by Actress Annet Mahendru who happens to speak six languages, waking with a start.

Tony, Percy’s Uncle knows where there are fuel stores, thanks to some tricks of light, but now the team needs to know where they actually want to go.

Who goes to comfort her? Of course it’s Elton, which just makes her guilt worse.

Using the same trick they used to find the fuel dumps, they find a likely target in New York where Hope and Iris’s dad is.

The kids and the adults both enjoy some alcohol while the younger group plays a game of Truth or Dare. This goes south when Percy asks Hope what the worst thing she’s ever done. She knows she’s killed Elton’s mom at this point, but she’s not willing to say that, so she leaves the group when Percy pushes her.

Flashbacks

While Hope is suffering we see Huck’s flashback to when the apocalypse started. She’s with her team, and they are facing their first zombies. It only takes one exchange for Huck to realize that headshots are critical. She must have watched a few zombie movies in her time.

As Huck is remembering, Hope wanders up to the roof where she bumps into Huck and admits that she killed Elton’s mom. Huck gives some good advice and tells Hope that no one else needs to know the truth. It won’t change anything but make life harder. Better to carry the truth and let the others go on in peaceful ignorance.

The next morning the team heads out to a CRM fuel dump, aiming to get enough fuel to get to New York.

Once inside Huck finds herself facing a hostage situation. Hope has a gun pressed against her head, and her survival depends on what Huck does next.

Huck talks down the hostage taker, and he releases Hope, but continue to holds Huck at gunpoint. We then see what Huck did when she was a Marine. She killed her own troops instead of killing innocent civilians. Then, after taking her hostages gun, and telling her she could save him, she puts a bullet in him, because the reality was he was too far gone.

Momma Drama

Once the team is safe, Tony and Percy tell the team they want to continue on the journey with them. Hope then gets the dagger twisted in her heart when Elton tells her that maybe his Mom is alive, because hey, anything is possible, and Hope has to agree.

As Hope and Huck talk about the pain of carrying the truth without sharing it, we see how Huck got her facial wounds. She did it to herself.

Truth or Dare  ends with Iris waking up, wondering why Percy didn’t come to meet her. When she goes looking for Percy, she finds Tony with most of his face missing. Percy is missing, and Silas is nearby, passed out in a bathroom stall.

Did Silas due the horrible deed? We are going to have to wait until next week to find out.

Truth or Dare Scoring

Truth or Dare scored a 60/100, putting it in Rainy Day territory. The Huck storyline was intriguing, but there just isn’t a lot to the storyline that is generating anxiety at this point. I’m hoping things will get better in the coming weeks.
