The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 4

The Wrong End of a Telescope is the fourth episode of the season. I’m hoping its a strong episode, because the last two have been in Rainy Day territory, and I have to be honest, I expect more from anything that carries The Walking Dead name.

The Wrong End of a Telescope picks up on the far side of the Blaze of Glory. Team Iris/Hope is on the march, trying to figure out where their father is.

The Group On The March

New York State

They know he’s in New York State, just not where, and unfortunately for them, New York State is a big piece of land.

New York State
New York State

To be exact, there are 54,556 square miles to cover. That is a lot of ground for a few kids and two adults.

The Team holes up in an abandoned high school. Because what building has lots of rooms for zombies to hide in and might have been used to house refugee who then were turned? Aren’t high school gyms full of cots during natural disasters?

The Team Enters The High School
The Team Enters The High School

So far we are ten minutes into the episode, and haven’t seen a single Empty yet. What does the team do? They decide to split up to explore, but at least they are pairing up. Still, separating the group in unknown territory seems like a bad idea.

Where Is The Anxiety?

I hope I’m not being too critical, but the atmosphere is still off. The survivors don’t seem to have any anxiety.

We are not fifteen minutes in, still haven’t seen a zombie. The people who produced this know the show has “The Walking Dead” in the title right?

Okay, we are now at the eighteen minute mark, and we finally see a zombie!!! And maybe something worse than a zombie, because whatever was crawling out of the room just got pulled back in. I’m guessing that whatever eats zombies, is likely dangerous to the survivors as well? Right?

Finally, there is a little bit of apprehension building. The survivors are in the high school, and something is in there with them. Which would be awesome, but the episode immediately cuts to a long cut scene of Hope and her dad.

There is too much backstory!!! We don’t need to know every characters life story in the first few episodes.

The Killing Room

Felix and Elton have found what appears to be a killing room for Empties, and Felix wants to get out. He doesn’t know who or what is killing the zombies, and it sounds like he doesn’t want to stay around long enough to find out.

Just when things were getting good, and we see a wolf snarling at Huck and Hope, we get forced to watch Irish and Silas practice ballroom dancing. I have nothing against ballroom dancing, but the blending of the last school dance, with them dancing, just ruins the mood. Aren’t I meant to feel like they could get eaten at any moment?

Hope and Huck slip around the angry doggy while Felix and Elton decide to go into the basement to get back to the gym where Iris and Silas are. At least Hope and Huck find some supplies, even if they had to killer an Empty to get them.

There are only fifteen minutes left, but things are finally picking up. Something is in the vents, and when it starts to grown I actually had a small jump scare.

Zombies In Lockers

Iris and Silas are in the gym basement, where apparently a lot of zombies were put in lockers? Lucky for Silas and Iris, they happen to end up just on the other side of the door where Huck and Hope are. This is right about where Silas looses it, and decides its better to beat a zombie to death with his bare hands than use his big freaking wrench.

The team is now reunited, just in time to see Silas lose his sh*t. We still don’t know exactly what he did, but the narrator did say even his mother testified against him, so it must have been bad.

While the main group is getting ready to get back on the road, Felix and Huck are working over Elton, trying to get him to join there “Go Back” movement.

The episode had a slow start but picked up as it went on. I’m giving The Wrong End of a Telescope a 71/100, and hoping next weeks episode is even better.

Z Nation, Season 1, Episode 8

Zunami picks up a little bit after Welcome to the Fu-Bar ends. Addy and Mack are off on their own, and Team Murphy is stranded, out of gas, out of water, and starting to suffer from dehydration, all while the massive Zunami is about to come down on top of them.

The Zombie Horde is Migrating

While Team Murphy struggles to survive the horde, Citizen Z struggles with a gas leak, which his subconscious tries desperately to help him realize.

Team Murphy is forced hide in a morgue’s cold room, while Warren is left to survive in a body bag.

We also see just how deep Murphy’s darkness is. He steals water from a woman and child to give to his group, which almost sounds like tough as nails survival, but then then he opens the door to let the woman and girl get eaten by their zombified husband and father. Taking the water might have been “okay”, but killing them just shows how deeply disturbed Murphy is.

Zunami Scoring

There honestly weren’t any great Zombie Kills this episode, let me know if you disagree. This, and the fact that the episode was more suspense than action cost it points for me. I scored it a 64/100, putting in the Rainy Day territory. The first of the season.

Z Nation, Season 1, Episode 7

Welcome to the Fu-Bar reunites some old friends. The arms dealers from Episode 1, Puppies and Kittens. They’ve somehow managed to survive, and make it from the east coast to Kansas, while liberating a truck full of weapons in the process.

Welcome to the Fu-Bar has one of my favorite horizon pics. As Addy and Mack are thinking about making a run for it on their motorcycle, they see a vast horde, kicking up a massive dust storm in the distance.

The Zombie Horde In The Distance

Team Murphy finds themselves in a trading town. Warren tries to drink away her sorrows, while 10K plays a fun game of shoot the zombie target, trying to win a 50 cal.

While Team Murphy is distracted with booze and the shooting tournament, Citizen Z tries to warn them, but no one is listening. The horde is coming.

Zombie Horde about to flood Kansas

Things rapidly go to hell, but it was kind of worth it because 10K gets what I think is his first kiss? It’s on the cheek, but its still part of any young man’s sentinel life events.

Welcome to the Fu-Bar Scoring

As the trading post is overrun, Warren comes out of her funk, kicks some *ss, and Team Murphy is back on the road. Mack and Addy are still out on their own however. This was another solid Z Nation episode and scored an 83/100.

Now for the big question? Who wins the Best Zombie Kill this episode?

Sketchy McClain‘s Six Gun Action

Sketchy showing us why he’s still alive. He’s got some real six gun skills.

Sketchy might be, well sketchy, but he knows how to work those wheel guns!

10K Long Distance Mercy Shot

Side Meat gets mercy.

For those people out there asking, “Is this a zombie kill?” Sadly for side meat he’s already been bit at this point. So when 10K shoots him it is both a zombie kill and mercy on multiple levels.

For me, the wheel gun action wins. Let me know if you agree in the comments.

Z Nation, Season 1, Episode 6

Resurrection Z is an intense episode.

It starts out with an introduction to the Resurrection Church and their twisted cult leader Jacob before segueing over to Team Murphy as they roll up to a protected enclave.

Garnett served with, and saved the camp commanders life, which buys them a free meal and a safe place to stay. At least until some of the exiled members of the Resurrection Church are allowed to reenter. They say they realized they made a mistake joining the cult, but once inside they make themselves into zombies, spreading chaos throughout.

Resurrection Church Member Making Himself A Zombie

There are no weapons allowed inside the safe haven. That has disastrous consequences once the zombie suicide crew puts their plan into action.

Team Murphy scrambles to get away as Garnett and Warren get their booty call interrupted. Damn Zombie Hordes! This leads to the first of the two candidates for Best Zombie Kill. The second follows closely after, as Addy and Mack are trying to survive the outbreak in the dining hall. Vote in the comments below.

The end of the episode has several major revelations. Murphy isn’t just a zombie bite survivor! Whatever was in the vaccine did more than just protect him from the viris. He’s something more. The zombies don’t react to him, and it even looks like he can communicate with them. He proves this with the old, I’ll risk having my flingers bitten off trick. There had to be a better way to prove he’s something more than human right?

Zombie Trust Test

Sadly, we lose the first member of Team Murphy at the end of the episode. This was a hard for me. The lost Team Member was one of my favorites. Thankfully I didn’t stop watching!

Addy Mixer Kill:

Home Sweet Zombie takes place in Warren’s hometown, making her face the realization that her husband is dead, all while a hurricane bears down on team Murphy. While Warren and Garnett are fighting for their lives, Doc, Murphy and Mack try and save a strangers life.

Murphy realizes something is changing. Just like puberty, he’s surprised when he starts to see his body change. Keith Allan, who plays Murphy, really shows his emotional range in this episode.

It says something about his acting that he makes you feel bad for the Zombie after its given mercy.

Doc meanwhile gets to play, well, Doctor. Doc always makes me smile.

Doc relieving pressure on the brain, the hard way.

Warren goes through an existential crisis, but pulls through, while 10-K and Cassandra having a bonding moment over surviving being tossed about in a car.

The Zombie kill of the week was a no brainer this week, because there wasn’t a ton of kills in this episode.

Full Metal Zombie sees our stalwart band of survivors on the road, facing the harsh realities of what it means to be a survivor in a post Zombie Apocalypse world. The team is focused on getting Murphy to a CDC lab in California, and if Citizen Z’s data is correct, there might be a military unit with a helicopter nearby.

It turns out to be a risky venture, but more importantly, who wins the Best Zombie Kill for the episode. Let me know in the comments below.

Option 1: Lt. Roberta Warren

If you like a little old school machete work, you’ll probably vote for the machete blow.

Season 1, Episode 4, Kill 1

Option 2: Combined Kill between Garnett and Addy

I’m going to say Addy did most of the work, all Garnett did was pull the pin, and I’m not sure if it was an accident or if he did it on purpose to be honest.

Season 1, Episode 4, Kill 2

Let me know in the comments who gets the Best Zombie Kill, for me, I’m going old school machete.

ZOMBIE SERIES – Z NATION, SEASON 1, EPISODE 3, Philly Feast

Philly Feast gives us Cassandra’s backstory. It also gives us a good picture of just how bad things are in Z Nation world. How bad? Well, let’s just say you aren’t going to want to have a Philly Cheesesteak post ZA.

There is a lot to love in Episode 3, Philly Feast. The first is the attention to detail. I’m pretty sure we see a bit of armpit hair when Cassandra takes her shirt off. Sure, it could be that she’s just adopted the European practice, but I’m going to give Z Nation credit for gluing it on there, because who has time to shave their pits when zombies are trying to eat you?

Cassandra’s Armpit Hair….Maybe?

The second was Citizen Z sharing a steak with his new dog friend, and the way they used that steak flipping to segue into the Family’s camp, which is where most of the action in Philly Feast takes place.

The third was seeing the Liberty Bell turn into a zombie killing projectile, which is also this episodes Best Zombie Kill:

If you carefully in the lower right of the image, you can see the legs of the first zombie taken out by the Liberty Bell.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 3

Season 1, Episode 3 is titled “The Tyger and the Lamb“.

The group has reached the “BOG”, the Blaze of Glory, and the fire has attracted hordes of the undead to the burning tire pit. The group has to cross the “BOG”, but how to do that with hordes of the undead around? Hope takes the responsibility on herself to reach the siren on one of the buildings in hopes of drawing the undead to her, and away from the main group.

While Silas has flashbacks to whatever happened before he moved to the Campus Colony, the main group is struggling with how to get out of the “BOG”. Silas did something, but it’s not clear if he killed his parent before or after they turned into zombies.

Season 1, Episode 3, The Tyger and the Lamb

Felix and Huck have found the main group, which drives home the realization that Hope was the one leaving the trail for the adults to find, but it’s not really clear why yet.

First Forty

The first forty minutes of The Tyger and the Lamb suffers from the same issues as Episode 2, The Blaze Of Glory. There just isn’t any suspense around the Empties.

It isn’t until the last few minutes of the episode when we see Elizabeth Kublek, the leader from the Civic, that the episode has any real tension. Elizabeth’s lieutenant questions what they did, how many people they killed, and she’s going to make sure she takes care of any potential issues before they grow, sending her lieutenant to some sort of mental health institute while also letting him know he’ll be doing manual labor when he gets out. Once he’s out the door, she does show some emotion, but she still turned him over, making me wonder if he’s related to her?

The Tyger and the Lamb Scoring

I’m hoping the series finds its pace and gets more intense, otherwise I’m afraid it won’t last more than a season or two. The Tyger and the Lamb scored a 65/100, improving slightly from the Episode 2 dip.

Fracking Zombies keeps up the fast paced action and expands the story on multiple fronts.

The crew escorting Murphy is focused on making a gas run, trying to fill up a tanker so they have all the fuel they need to make the long journey to California.

but for me the more powerful half of the episode revolved around Citizen Z. He’s been alone in the artic for a year and the isolation is getting to him. When he sees what appears to be another survivor, his heart swells with hope and joy.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 2

The Blaze of Gory picks up right were Brave left off. Iris is trying to lose her zombie killing virginity, and not doing very well at it. She ends up pushing the zombie into an empty pool and only survives due to dumb luck.

The falling into a pool thing must have been a contractual item for both sisters, because just a little while after Iris ends up falling into an empty pool, so does her sister Hope.

The coolest zombie in the episode was the bee zombie, the poor undead creature was taken over by bees.

Bee Zombie

There are lots of plot points in The Blaze of Gory, including emotional flashbacks of Felix being forced to tell his father he is gay.

There was just something missing though. The edge that the other Walking Dead franchises have just doesn’t exist in this world. I’m hoping it gets there, but the world just doesn’t feel threatening, and the actors don’t feel like they are afraid of the zombies.

The Blaze of Gory Scoring

So far this feels like a G rated kids adaption of a family friendly Zombie TV Show. Unfortunately, that’s not what I am looking for. I hope things get grittier and more real soon. The Blaze of Gory fell 25 points from Brave, scoring Rainy Day Score of 50/100.
