Black Summer, Season 2, Episode 3

Card Game opens with a bit of strange childhood competitive ranting as Freddie’s mom discusses her two sons. This is just before Rose and Anna show up and Freddie lets them in. I can’t help but think as Rose enters of the bloody house we saw in Episode 1.

Episode 1 Body In The Manor

I’m hoping and guessing we are going to get to see how that body got there. Freddie’s mom seems like a complete trainwreck. There seems to be multiple groups inside the house. Freddie’s mom and her two sons are one group, then we have the group who has a radio and can talk to the plane, and of course Rose and Anna as the third.

Black Summer, Season 2

The Radio Group says there are crates out there – which I think is why that group ends up in the gunfight. Did I mention I hate the reversal chronology crap? Just let simple folks like me watch it in the order it happened in.

As Anna hits the head, I think we see Spears hiding upstairs? Would he know their voices from across floors? Freddie’s brother wants Rose to go with the crate retrieval group, but Rose basically shuts that down. I completely understand. There is no way I’d leave my kid in the Zombie Apocalypse.

Freddie asks to play the Card Game that Rose and Anna are playing, but he can’t quite get the hang of it, which is when we get to hear his creepy line about Rose smelling good.

How Do You Smell So Good?

I was glad the scene didn’t get rapey.

Shortly after, we see our Crate Retrieval expert race away on his snowmobile, barely dodging the lone Zombie living around the house. Why wouldn’t they just lure it to a door and stab it in the head or shoot it?

As night falls those inside the house get jumpy, resulting in a short standoff.

Just A Bit Jumpy

Freddie’s brother is a paranoid prick. He’s acting erraticaly, convinced that our Crate Retriever’s girl is lying to him. When they hear the plane again overhead he forces the young woman to radio, even though she isn’t supposed to.

When they give up on the radio our lady friend finds her axe is missing. never touch a ladies axe unless she invites you!

Shortly after we see Freddie go out to grab some wood – which is when his brother screws him over, forcing him to stay outside until he brings wood back – which is exactly how Freddie ends up in a tree.

Inside Freddie’s brother is paranoid as ever. He wants to know where the Crate Retriever went as well as where the axe went, all while attacking his brother to their mother, and Freddie’s mom is just a pure sweetheart:

When Freddie’s brother hears the radio he rushes upstairs, convinced the young woman was talking to someone, which gets her shot, which unleashes a Zombie inside the house. This turns into a mad fight as no one seems to have a gun on them. At least until Rose takes care of business, taking out our Zombie, and then the Old Lady who was bitten before she can turn as well. It’s not 100% who did the shooting either. I think Rose took out the first Zombie and then Anna maybe did the second? Unfortunately Freddie’s mom and a-hole brother are still alive at this point.

Rose, ever the good mom, gives Anna the little bit of food they have left. The survivors all look like they are emotionally done, and the only thing that gets Freddie’s brother off the couch is the sound of the radio on the second floor. He rushes upstairs and can hear someone talking, but he trashes the radio when the garbled speaker doesn’t respond to him. I’d say long term planning isn’t his strength.

When Freddie’s brother goes downstairs Rose and Mom are in a fight that quickly turns deadly:

I love how calm and collected Anna is after she’s just murdered someone. Is that strange? I think that to survive in that world you’d need to be prepared to kill in a heartbeat, and kids adapt quicker than adults. I just hope they don’t ruin Anna like the writers did with Carl in TWD.

Upstairs we see Spears, walking slowly, eyes wide, the axe in his hands. He walks down the hall until we Rose and Anna’s lower bodies, sleeping in bed, just before the episode ends.

Card Game Scoring

Card Game is a hard episode to score. On one level I hate that the Zombies didn’t play a more important part. On another I was kinda holding my breath all episode. I guess that says something about how well it was done, which is why Card Game is getting a 91/100, making it Worth Your Time.

The Walking Dead, Season 2, Episode 2

Bloodletting begins with a short flashback. Lori is remembering the day that Shane came to tell her that Rick has been shot in the line of duty. Just before Shane arrived she’s telling a girlfriend that her and Rick had a fight, and she was not being reasonable. Rick responds to her anger with coolness, and that makes her even madder. The way Lori responds when Shane pulls up is just heartbreaking. How does a police wife respond when her husbands partner shows up without him?

Is He Alive?

Spoilers Below

Shane tells Lori that its his fault. The call said there were two men in the car, but there was a third. The third man got the drop on them. Lori has to tell Carl that his dad has been shot.

When we come back from the first break, Rick, Shane, and Otis (the man who shoots Carl while hunting deer) are running for the farm. Otis told them that Hershel will be able to help them. This does raise some interesting questions about how well supplied Hershel’s camp is, because, well, Otis is a big boy – which is slowing them down a bit.

Carl Is Down

We are then to meet a newcomer. This newcomer will become one of the major characters for multiple seasons. Please let me introduce Maggie. Maggie sees Rick running, and alerts her father, Hershel. When Rick gets to the porch the first thing Hershel asks is whether Carl was bit. Once they confirm Carl was shot, not bit, the Hershel Emergency medical team goes into action.

Back in the woods, Team Daryl is leading the rest of the group on their continued search for Sophia. They heard the shot in the distance that hit Carl, but have no idea what actually happened – yet.

Back at Hershel’s house, we see Carl struggling, screaming as Hershel removes the bullet fragments. At least until he passes out from the pain. Lucky for Carl, him and his father have the same blood type.

How To Save Carl

Hershel has stabilized Carl, but he needs to open his belly to stop a bleeder. The local hospital burnt down, but FEMA opened a shelter at the local high school and there are medical supplies there. Rick can’t leave, he has to be there to give Carl blood. This leaves the medical supply mission up to Shane and Otis, while Maggie goes to get Lori, on a f*cking horse!!!

Maggie’s Ride

Back at Hershel’s farm, Rick and Hershel are having a heart to heart, at least until Maggie returns with Lori and she’s faced with seeing her son on the brink of death, pale and unresponsive from his wounds.

We then get an awesome back and forth between Lori and Hershel as he tells her he’s a vet, and not a combat vet, a vet as in a veterinarian.

The High School

Meanwhile Shane and Otis have reached the FEMA site at the local high school, and things do not look so great. There are a lot of Zombies about.

Zombie Hordes At The High School

With so many Zombies about, Shane is forced to wait until nightfall when he can use road flares liberated from one of the cop cars to create a distraction to get the Zombies away from the FEMA trailer.

Flares To Distract The Walkers

The distraction gives Shane and Otis the time they need to collect the medical supplies, but the horde is hot on their trail as they leave the trailer. This is one of the reasons that The Walking Dead is so awesome, the Zombie hordes are just so well done:

The Horde Hot On Shane’s Heels

With hordes coming at them from every side, Shane and Otis are forced to take shelter inside the school, at least as long as the gate will hold.

Shane And Otis Are Cornered

Bloodletting Scoring

Bloodletting was another episode of The Walking Dead that kept me glued to the screen. It scored a 91/100, and is Worth Your Time. What cost it 9 points? Mostly very minor things. The first is that a lot of time bullet fragments are left in patients unless they are causing issues. So while the surgery is still necessary for the bleeder, going after the fragments is just asking for trouble. The other minor thing is the Zombies are heavy in the last few minutes, but you can never have enough Zombie kills, and there was really just one good kill when Daryl kills the Zombie that was menacing Andrea before Maggie shows up on her stead to save her.

Black Summer, Season 1, Episode 8

The team is out on the streets, and find themselves surrounded by other survivors, all heading towards the Stadium and its promised evacuation to safety.

Within a minute the first biter rushes the growing crowd of survivors, and the shooting starts.

Black Summer

The problem with shooting is that the sound brings more of the undead in an ever increasing cycle. One of the survivors is tackled. As she goes down she sprays her weapon wildly about, taking the first member of our team with a stray round.

Black Summer Friendly Fire

This is one of those details a lot of shows and movies get wrong. People panic. Stray rounds can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys.

War Zone

In the chaos, Spears and Sun get separated from William and Rose. The streets of downtown are a war zone. People are moving in every which way, and the biters are among them. People are being bitten. The Zombie horde is growing. All the while bombs are falling not too far off.

Poor Lance is on his own. He is being chased by a massive horde. At least until a bomb takes out the group behind him and knocks him from his feet.

They are almost there though, the stadium is within sight.

Rose, Sun, Spears, and William meet back up on the air bridge into the stadium, but things don’t look good. There are biters in front of them, and a massive horde coming up from behind.

The Horde

Sadly, William’s leg has gives out. The horde is close behind them. Rose does the only things she can and puts a bullet in his head. Being eaten alive would suck.

Life is harsh when the biters are close on your heels.

The Stadium

Spears, Sun, and Rose make it into the stadium, but there doesn’t appear to be any military there. The place looks deserted, until Rose sees her daughter come down the steps on the far side of the stadium.

Has Rose found her daughter? Or is this a hallucination? I think its real, my brother thinks she’s dreaming. I guess we have to wait for Season 2 to find out.

The Stadium Scoring

The Stadium scored a 91/100, making it Worth Your Time. Why? Firstly, it was full of for intense zombie violence. I’m talking top notch action scenes. Secondly those scene had tons of hordes, and realism. Why did it lose 9 points? Because it was too short and I want more!!!

I can’t wait for Season 2.

Z Nation, Season 1, Episode 13

Doctor of the Dead fills in a lot of backstory. Citizen Z routes Team Murphy to a lab in Colorado. What do they find when they get there? They find a lab overrun by zombies. We then get a display of Murphy’s special abilities. Murphy is able to shield the team so they can walk into the lab.

Surrounded by Zombies

As Team Murphy is exploring, we also see flashbacks to pre apocalypse days, when Dr. Walter Kurian is taking samples of peoples brain fluids, while they are still alive.

In order to explore the Colorado lab, Team Murphy has to go through decontamination before they can continue deeper into the lab. This is when we see an awesome shot of Doc’s farmer tan.

Doc’s Tan

Or it dirt? I’m going to be charitable and say its his tan.

Once deep inside the Colorado plant, the team finds Patient 0, just before Dr. Kurian shows up with a few solders.

Citizen Z realizes that Dr. Kurian isn’t exactly who he says he is, but it’s too late for Team Murphy, they are already in trouble. Team Murphy is only saved from disaster by Murphy’s parting gift to Cassandra. Or at least, saved from getting shot.

Murphy has a panic attack, fleeing everything, and in the process triggering the security fail safe protocols of the lab. Apparently the powers that used to be fully understood what was inside, because when the lab’s security protocols are triggered, multiple nukes are launched.

Nukes In Flight

Doctor of the Dead Scoring

Thus ends Season 1 of Z Nation. It appears nukes are about to fall on Team Murphy as well as Citizen Z. Docter of the Dead was a strong ending to the first season, and scored a 91/100, making it Worth Your Time.
