The Walking Dead, Season 1, Episode 1

Days Gone Bye kicked off not just The Walking Dead series, but spins off to become two more shows as well as an after episode talk show. Its hard to believe The Walking Dead is over a decade old at this point. I remember waiting to watch it with my older boys, all of us sitting on the couch, and we’d excitedly discuss what was going on during commercials.

Days Gone Bye reminded me why we love this series so much. It is just a masterclass in how to set mood and build characters.

Current Timeline

Days Gone Bye starts in the now. Rick has stopped at a gas station surrounded by what was a refugee camp, hoping to find some gas. What he finds instead is the iconic “little girl zombie“.

Little Girl Zombie

Rick is Wounded (Flashback)

We then cut to the series theme song before we take a step back in time. Rick Grimes and Shane are eating lunch as Shane is complaining about his girlfriend who leaves every light on in his house. Rick is telling Shane about his own problems with his wife Lori when the call comes in. There is a high speed pursuit, and one officer has already been shot and wounded. Rick and Shane put out the spike strip and wait.

Spike Strip Deployed

After the bad guys hit the spike strip and wreck the bad guys come out with guns in hand. Rick gets tagged in the vest by assailant one. Assailant two goes down in a hail of bullets. Rick and Shane are celebrating the bullet hitting Rick’s vest when a 3rd Assailant climbs out and shoots Rick in the left shoulder.

Rick Gets Shot

We then see some haze as Shane drops by to talk to Rick who is barely conscious in the hospital.

Rick Wakes Up (Current Timeline)

When Rick wakes up he’s a little delirious. He thinks Shane is still in his room, but the flowers in the vase are dried up and dead. Rick tries to get out of bed and ends up on the floor, calling for a nurse who never comes. When he finally makes it to out of his room he finds a hospital bed pushed up against his door and a dim hallway with no nurses or patients in sight.

Empty Hallway

Rick finds his way to a nurses station and finds some matches, but its not long before he sees what type of world he’s woken into. Down the hallway there is what’s left of a woman lying on the floor.

Zombie Chow

Rick just woke up from some form of barely conscious state. he has no idea what’s going on, and its not getting better. He wanders down the hall the other way to find a doorway chained shut with a warning spray painted across the doors. I’m actually surprised this type of error made it into the show. What the hell does “Don’t Dead Open Inside” mean anyway?

Don’t Dead Open Inside

Do fingers count as Rick’s first Zombie? He sees fingers coming through the door, but he doesn’t really know what’s going on yet so I’m going to say no, he still hasn’t seen his first Zombie.

Exiting The Hospital

Rick freaks out and flees through the fire escape, which is very dark and creepy before finding himself on the hospital loading dock. Bodies are lined up, and most of them have blood marks near their heads, showing they turned and were put down before being lined up outside. We get a good idea of just how bad things were as the camera pulls back, showing the volume of dead that were piling up.

Lots of Bodies

Rick wanders away from the loading dock and finds what looks to be a military deployment on the nearby hill. Whatever happened at the hospital must have been quick. The helicopters appear to have weapons mounted but there are no nearby bodies, which makes me think the crews were taken down away from the helos.

Military Hardware Outside Hospital

Rick wanders away from the hospital until he finds a bicycle, as well as his first Zombie.

Rick’s First Zombie

Lucky for Rick the first zombie he encountered was half the woman she was before turning. Rick jumps on the bike and races to his home to find it empty. Lori and Carl aren’t there and Rick has a moment of doubt. Is he in his hospital bed hallucinating?

Morgan

Rick goes out to the front of his house, his vision blurred as he sees a man walking towards him in the distance just before he gets clocked. As Rick is lying there half out of it he sees Morgan put a revolver against the walkers head and pull the trigger.

Morgan Taking Care Of A Walker

Morgan points his gun at Rick and demands to know what caused his wound as Rick passes out. When he wakes up Morgan has changed his bandage and tied him to the bed.

Once Morgan is convinced Rick wasn’t bitten, he cuts him loose. Rick, Morgan and Morgan’s son Duane end up in the living room and Rick is confused. He watched Morgan kill a man, and this is the first time we hear the term “walker”. Morgan tells Rick he didn’t kill a man, he killed a walker.

Morgan tries to explain the rules of the new world to Rick once he realizes Rick has no clue what’s going on, but Rick doesn’t look like he’s 100% convinced yet.

After a car alarm brings the survivors to the window we see Morgan’s turned walker wandering around in front of the house, which set’s Duane off. Rick is at the door, looking out the peep hole when Morgan’s wife comes to the door, attracted to something about the house.

Morgan’s Wife

Training Day

The next day Rick gets to kill his first walker. Morgan has given him a face shield and a baseball bat, but Rick’s still weak from being shot, and just barely gets the job done. Afterwards Rick takes Morgan to his house and explains that he thinks Lori and Carl are alive because clothes and pictures are missing.

Duane volunteers that they probably went to Atlanta. Before everything collapsed, people were told to head for Atlanta. There was supposed to be security there as well as the CDC. Rick has found a new destination, but first, he needs some gear.

This brings Rick to the station, where there is still enough propane in the tanks to allow the three survivors to enjoy a hot shower, a rarity in the post apocalypse days. After collecting weapons Rick gives Morgan a rifle and ammo before heading out.

As Rick goes back to find his first walker and put her out of her misery Morgan goes to his window to practice with his new rifle. Rick kills the female walker as Morgan kills a few of the walkers in front of his house, but isn’t able to pull the trigger when he finds his turned wife in his scope sights.

Atlanta

Rick is on his way to Atlanta, hailing anyone who can hear him on his CB radio. A group of survivors, including Lori and Shane can hear him, but Rick never get’s their transmission. Lori didn’t hear Rick’s voice, but she wants to warn whoever sent the transmission. The group of survivors know that Atlanta isn’t safe.

On his way into the city Rick is running out of fuel, but he finds a farm and a horse, which leads to another iconic shot from the series as Rick rides his steed into the city.

Rick’s Horseback Journey Into Atlanta

The city looks deserted at first, but its not long before Rick encounters his first walkers. The horse is skittish and does not like the undead. Rick is making his way down the street when he hears a helicopter and sees its reflection in a skyscraper, which leads him to go charging around the corner to try and get a glimpse of the whirly bird. Instead he finds himself face to face with a massive herd of walkers.

Rick Comes Face to Face With His First Horde

Things go downhill from here for Rick. Rick tries to flee but finds himself surrounded. His horse spooks and throws him as the zombies swarm. Rick uses the momentary distraction of his horse being eaten to climb under a tank. It doesn’t take long for the walkers to find him. Risk escapes into the tank through a hatch just in time.

Rick quickly kills a crew member turned walker before the tank is swarmed. Rick is surrounded on all sides, and in big trouble when someone reaches out on the radio.

Glenn – “Hey, you. Dumbass. Yeah, you in the tank.”

They were probably the sweetest words Rick’s ever heard.

Days Gone By Scoring

Days Gone Bye scored a 100/100 and is Worth Your Time. The atmosphere and mood set by this work of art was just perfect. This is what every other zombie show strives to be.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 15

All Good Things Must Come to an End is the season finale, so I guess its aptly named. The episode starts with Citizen Z, almost out of batteries, burning papers for warmth. He desperately tries to warn Addy, and Team Murphy to abort the mission. Whoever was tracking Murphy through Camp Northern Lights knows exactly where he is.

Citizen Z Trying To Call Off The Murphy Drop Off

We then cut back to the diner. The old woman is feeding Warren tea while Vasquez looks around. Something is tickling his suspicion, but not enough to keep him from letting Warren call in the rest of the team.

Bounty

Team Murphy settles in for some tea just as a group of Bounty Hunters shows up. They have a “Murphy” to hand in for the bounty.

Bounty Hunters

The leader of the Bounty Hunters talks to Warren. One of the others finds cross dressing Murphy attractive. This leads to Team Murphy’s cover being blown.

Zombie Mmic

The lead Bounty Hunter figures out Murphy has some tie to their fake Murphy, which results in a little shootout. Team Murphy takes out the Bounty Hunters but 10K was hit in the process. As Doc and Addy work on 10K, Auntie goes outside with Murphy and Warren. Warren puts a flare up, signaling for Dr. Merch and the Mount Wilson CDC lab. Dr. Merch apparently has a submarine.

Mount Wilson CDC Lab Submarine

While Team Murphy tries to make sense of what is happening Citizen Z puts his pooch on a sled and begins to pull. I think he’s got that reversed, but I’m guessing poochy is hurt.

Dr. Merch

Back at the diner, the military has shown up, and brought Dr. Merch with them. She tries to verify it’s Murphy, but can’t remember until Murphy jobs her memory a bit about their last encounter.

Is That Murphy?

The military only has room to take Murphy and 10K back to the sub, which leads to heartfelt goodbyes. The team has been through a lot together.

Murphy and 10K have just left when La Reina and her Zeros show up. They want revenge on Warren for her betrayal, and to collect Murphy.

Zero Ambush

Things do not look good for the team, they are pinned down and outgunned. How did La Reina find them? She’s got Dr Kurian’s head in a box, and apparently he’s connected enough with Murphy to act as a compass. Good thing for the remnants of Team Murphy that Auntie has her MAC-10 handy. Aunti lays down some cover fire so they can flee into the diner.

Lucky for the team, Auntie has a stash of weapons to help even things up a little.

On the sub the medical staff agree to treat 10K and get him back to the mainland. Meanwhile Murphy learns about Zona, and why the people on the sub are so interested in him. The soldiers are infected, and they look like they are starting to turn.

Infected Submariners

The Vaccine

As Dr. Merch is taking blood from Murphy we find out that all the Zona staff were infected with an early version of the vaccine. Unfortunately its wearing off, and all those people are starting to turn. It doesn’t take Murphy long to figure out he’s not interested in being Zona’s blood supply.

Back at the diner La Reina tries to bargain, telling the team they just want Murphy. La Reina will do anything to get to Murphy. Even sacrifice the front ranks of her soldiers to create walking Z shields.

Auntie gets hit and turns, then gets an axe to the skull from outside while she tries to eat Doc. As the two sides spray lead at each other Addy, and the creepy masked Zero end up going mano a mano, breaking the Z-Whacker in the process!!!

Z-Whacker Breaks

This leads to La Reina and Warren going toe to toe as well. It looks like Warren is about to lose when Escorpion shows up and puts a stake through La Reina. Only he’s not Escorpion any longer, he’s Hector. How did he survive? The last time we saw him Vasquez pushed him into a basement full of Z’s.

Vasquez

Hector tells Vasquez he’s not Escorpion anymore. He also understands if Vasquez wants to kill him. He is sorry, but he’s not the same man anymore. In the end Vesquez couldn’t do it. For Vasquez it’s the end of the road, they finished their mission. Warren, Doc and Addy end up rolling out with Hector, heading for the beach to pick up 10K.

Back on the sub, 10K wakes up to distant alarms before we cut to Warren and team at the ocean’s edge. What they see doesn’t look good, the sub is burning.

Sub On Fire

A moment later they see a boat heading away from the sub, and they can clearly see Murphy, but no 10K. When we get a close up of the boat its clear that Murphy is in control, he’s bitten everyone on his ride.

All Good Things Must Come to an End, ends on a cliffhanger on multiple fronts.

Where is 10K?

Who are the Chinese soldiers that swarm Warren and team? Do they mean Team Warren harm?

Is Citizen Z going to survive his deep freeze?

Frozen 10K

And what is going to happen to Murphy’s daughter Lucy?

All Good Things Must Come to an End Scoring

So many things are going on in the last few minutes of this season ender, but it was really well done and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, which is why All Good Things Must Come to an End scored a 94/100 and is Worth Your Time.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 14

Day 1 tells the origin stories of our main characters, and does a kick *ss job of doing it.

The story starts with Citizen Z, in federal custody, about to go on trial for hacking when a man from the NSA comes with one last offer. We drop the charges if you work for us, while passing Citizen Z a very odd note…

Citizen Z Learns The Worlds Fate Before It Started

While Citizen is facing a hacker at Camp Northern Light, the Rest of Team Murphy has made it to the California border, and there isn’t much there. With all our survivors walking across a barren, destroyed landscape, there is plenty of time for each of them to remember where they were when the biting started.

Warren was in Trenton NJ when she encounters her first Z.

Warren’s First Z

It doesn’t take long for Warren to encounter Z’s two, three, and so on. Lucky for her she had a .45 on her hip and instinctively went for headshots as her army buddies come stumbling in.

Warren Takes Headshots

Doc

Next we get to see what Doc was going when the Zombie Apocalypse started, and I have to say, his story was one of my favorites. Doc was a drug and alcohol counselor, and I love his story.

The Drug & Alcohol Counselor

Doc is who I aspire to be. Fun, upbeat, and yet when push comes to shove, just fine with doing the shoving, and then hugging it out afterwards. After Doc helps the therapist next to him, he comes back and encounters his first Z, eating his patient.

Doc’s First Z

One of the things I love about Doc walking in on Zombie Lunchtime is how quickly he assesses the situation. He says he didn’t mean to intrude, but his eyebrows are already furrowed, going through the options before he settles on “It’s a damn Zombie.”

Sadly for Doc, his five years of sobriety prior to the Z are about to end, because when people starting eating people, a few drugs are in order.

Citizen Z

We cut back to Citizen Z next as he figures out what his hacker has been after. Someone hacked Camp Northern Light so they could keep track on the world’s most valuable asset…Murphy.

We then cut to Addy watching ice hockey and get a blast from the past as we learn how she and Mack ended up as survival partners. She’s watching the game when Mack and another skater get into a fist fight that is rapidly interrupted by an angry hobo zombie. If you look carefully in the shot below you can see just over the skaters right shoulder.

Addy’s First Z

Addy ends up saving Mack before they flee the stadium together. This was a fun segment, but it was tough seeing Mack again. I did enjoy the Addy and Mack segment though.

As 10K is watching the birds overhead its his turn to remember where he was when it started. Of all the backstories, 10K’s makes him look the youngest. He’s out fishing when he stumbles upon a game warden with a few arrows stuck in her.

10K’s First Z

Lucky for 10K his father is there to pick off a few of the horde.

The next flashback is just as heartbreaking as Addy’s. Vasquez is at the funeral parlor for his wife and daughter when the outbreak hits.

Vasquez’s First Z

Sadly for Vasquez, after he takes care of the mortuary attendant, he has to face his turned wife as she breaks out of her casket.

Vasquez Facing His Family

The final flashback belongs to Murphy. He’s in prison, playing cards in the yard when the outbreak hits. It feels so wrong to see Murphy without blue skin!!!

Murphy In Prison

The card game doesn’t last long. Two inmates get into a fight and after one stabs the other a few times, Murphy gets introduced to what is about to become his life as the stabbee quickly turns…

Murphy’s First Z

Murphy survives, but as he flees the yard, he is true to his “Murphy First” policy, locking the door behind him.

The writer’s have done an amazing job making Murphy a complete d*ck, but yet he’s likable. It’s one of those things about Z Nation that is just so well done. Murphy is a horrible person in many ways, but he also has moments of good that shine through. I guess that appeals to all of us for obvious reasons.

Murphy’s scene ends with him telling Warren he doesn’t want to keep going. He’s scared and is afraid it will hurt. Warren tells him she’s not going to lie, It might hurt, but it’s what has to happen.

We then cut to Citizen Z coming to the realization that someone has been using him to track Murphy the whole time, and he shuts down the servers that are left, trying to protect people he’s never met, but has a deep connection to.

Day 1  ends with Team Murphy reaching the west coast. They’ve reached the ocean, and are just a few steps away from the meeting place where the CDC is supposed to pick them up and help make a vaccine from Murphy’s blood.

Instead of finding a CDC lab Team Murphy finds themselves at a diner, or a Greasy Spoon as Murphy says. Warren and Vasquez go in to check it out only to find an older woman behind the counter, ready to offer tea while she keeps a MAC-10 just out of sight.

Day 1 Scoring

Day 1 was just a masterpiece in flashbacks and scored a 90/100, making it Worth Your Time.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 11, Corporate

Corporate Retreat has one of the most awesome opening scenes ever. This is just a kick *ss few moments of Zombie Violence. I loved the segment where 10K covers Doc and a through and through shot bounces off Doc’s necklace to kill another zombie.

10K kicking some serious *ss

Outside the smoke is thick and so are the Z’s. Once Team Murphy makes it to the hotel they find themselves in the midst of a work retreat. The survivors left in the hotel were there for a conference. They’ve been stuck in the hotel with a self help corporate guru since the Zombie Apocalypse started.

Team Murphy

Shortly after Team Murphy has joined the survivors in the hotel there is a shooting. Murphy and another hotel guest have been shot. To make things worse, the bullet went through Murphy. This means the wounded hotel guest is now on the same path as Cassandra.

This leads to a crazy “trust circle” scene. The hotel guests and Team Murphy pass along a didgeridoo to decide who gets to talk.

After the initial “trust circle” kicks out one of the hotel guests to face the Z’s in the smoke, Doc explains how he’s been feeding the wounded man Murphy’s blood. You have to love Doc.

As Warren discusses the situation with the Corporate Retreat Leader they wander down to the kitchen to find that there is a Z in the deep freezer.

Surprise Freezer Zombie

Know what happens when Z’s are around? People get bit, and then you have more Z’s. Good thing 10K and Vasquez are both good shots. Otherwise the Corporate Retreat Guests may have lost more than they did.

Shots

Shots are heard close by and the team rushes in to find that Doc has been shot at while he cared for Murphy. The stash of food was stolen.

The team splits up to search the hotel. This leads to Addy and one of the female guests, Dana, being alone together. The woman seems to know something about what’s going on. She’s anxious and begs Addy to take her with her when they leave. As the two are hiding, Warren and Vasquez come in and clear the room.

Closet Time WIth Addy

As Dana and Addy spill out of the closet I love Warren’s “Everything all right?” comment. There is just something about the drawl that says so much more than the words.

The moment is then shattered as whoever stole the food makes some noise. All the attention gets drawn back to the main lobby. Vasquez and Warren charge in and find themselves face to face with the Corporate Retreat Leader. He asks them if they caught the thief?

Yes, I thought his sudden appearance was suspicious as well.

As the survivors sit in lobby, trying to make sense of everything that’s happening we get a moment where Addy and Dana are looking at each other across the room. Clearly they have a connection.

Glory Hole

Out in the lobby the situation isn’t so good. The horde seems attracted to the hotel, and some of them are starting to break through. This leads to a wonderful Glory Hole kill.

Glory Hole Kill

Lots of bad things happen after that. The Z’s already trapped in the hotel break free of their quarantine wing. Then the glass in the lobby shatters. Everyone flees into the kitchen where Doc is performing medical experiments with his two patients. The stress and anxiety turns the survivors into a bickering mass of name calling until Warren puts her foot down.

It’s time to find out who the killer is.

Doc has been giving the wounded hotel guest Murphy blood, all so he can ask the now Zombie Guest who shot him. It wasn’t the Corporate Retreat Leader after all, but Dana’s hotel beau instead, who wants Dana to leave with them. The look on Addy’s face is shock and pain. At least Dana had the good grace to say she never wanted anyone to get hurt. Well Dana, Addy got hurt! (And some people where shot and killed, but Addy got hurt!!!)

Revenge is taken however as the Zombie Guest takes Doc’s gun and kills the grocery thief, then gets shot in return.

Wrap Up

This is just about when Murphy wakes up from his concussion and the story quickly wrap up. With Murphy awake the zombies are released from whatever was pulling them to the hotel, and Ziggy ends up back at the door, covered in gore. They thought he was the killer originally and exiled him, but he did just fine with his hammer.

Iggy Returns

The Corporate Retreat Leader pays for his decision by getting his head crushed with his talking stick. Good for you Iggy!

Corporate Retreat ends with a little bit of a heartache.

Addy and Dana Say Goodbye

There is clearly longing here for Addy, but she doesn’t really trust Dana for good reason, but still, you can’t just force a feeling to stop. They say their goodbyes, and they both hope they get to see each other again. Sadly, there was no kiss. Come on, be brave, show a peck on the lips or a hug, right? Then Addy climbs into the van to find all eyes on her.

Corporate Retreat Scoring

Corporate Retreat scored an 85/100. It opened with some solid action and then kept the pace and mystery up throughout, making it Worth Your Time.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 10

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon finds the team cruising along the highway in Nevada when Citizen Z makes contact.

Citizen Z: “Well people. If we weren’t already in an apocalypse, this would be a damn obvious sign. What do you call something worse than an apocalypse? Because this is it. Whatever it is. Swarm. Horde. Zunami. There is no end in sight.”

Zunami

Unfortunately for Team Murphy, their RV breaks down, leaving them searching for help or a replacement. Doc and 10K end up being taken captive by Native Americans while Murphy, Warren, and Vasquez end up at a Native American casino.

While the team works through their issues with Native American hosts, trying to get them to believe a massive horde is coming, Citizen Z is dealing with one of the remaining fast zombies at Camp Northern Light. This leads to what for me was clearly the Best Zombie Kill of the episode.

After asking Warren for help to use a rocket, Citizen Z makes an epic kill with an anti tank weapon. And yes, the battery unit was down his pants so he could warm it up enough to make the shot.

Anti Tank Zombie Shot

Things are looking pretty grim for Team Murphy and their new Native Americans friends (after a rough start). There is a massive Zunami coming, and it is going to swarm everything in its path.

The episode ends with Warren telling Murphy he’s going to have to pick a world to live in, and to remember that the humans are trying to save him, while the zombies are trying to eat him.

Thankfully Doc is a genius and looking at a cave paining of buffalo and it reminds him of how the Native Americans hunted in ages past.

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon Scoring

We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon becomes a staple comment in future episodes across multiple seasons and it was a fun episode that scored a 72/100.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 6

The team is in Springfield, Illinois, and things aren’t good. Zombie Baby Daddy starts with the team surrounded. The only thing left to do is to kick some Zombie ass. This fight also confirms a few things we learned from last episode, Zombaby. The Zombies are attracted to Lucy, and Murphy’s power over them doesn’t work when they are locked on her.

This leads to several awesome Zombie Kills in the first three minutes of the episode.

First we see 10K using gears as sling shot projectiles…

10K Sling Shot Kill

Followed up by Warren with some slick machete work…

Warren Working the Machete

A Lot Of Lincolns

Doc also has a brief moment where he’s not sure if he’s having a bad trip when he comes fact to face with a bus full of Abraham Lincolns. I love Doc and the fun he brings to every episode.

Zombie Lincolns

After the team takes care of the immediate Zombie threat they flee into the woods. Team Warren finds itself with two objectives. The first is for Warren to track down Vasquez. Meanwhile Addy, 10K, and Doc try to assess whether Lucy is going to become a threat, or a savior as she grows.

Addy, Doc, and 10K’s attempts to get Murphy to let them hold the baby only spooks Murphy. This forces him deeper into the woods, where Lucy’s Zombie attractive powers brings out a few Zombified woodland critters.

Zombie Critters

The Zombie critters end up chasing Murphy deeper into the woods. This leads him to a small homestead protected by a man and woman. Murphy realizes he can’t take care of Lucy with everyone so focused on her, so he does what every Zombie Dad would do. He makes two zombie slaves to take care of his baby.

Zombie Baby Sitters

While Murphy is taking care of his child care situation, Warren and Vasquez are forced to fight for their lives, all while Vasquez reveals how was originally a federal agent before he was compromised by the cartels, and both Warren and Vasquez get to do some surgery on the other. They both make it, but everyone else isn’t so lucky.

Cassandra is blindly loyal to Murphy, and in the process of trying to protect her maker, she hurts Addy, then pushes 10K too far. He’s forced to protect himself, or die, and in the end, it costs Cassandra her life.

Doc tries his best to make 10K feel better, but 10K had feelings for her, which makes her death even harder to deal with. She was 10K’s 3255th kill, and Murphy is pissed, but Warren keeps things from devolving into a fist fight.

Team Murphy has to continue on, for humanities sake.

Zombie Baby Daddy Scoring

Zombie Baby Daddy scored an 86/100 and is Worth Your Time.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 5

Zombaby finds Team Murphy moving through a small town in Wisconsin. The Zombie apocalypse must have hit during their cheese festival, because the town is decked out with everything from a massive cheese wheel, to people in cheesy costumes. This reminds Warren about how they turned the Liberty bell in Philadelphia into a weapon back in Season 1, Philly Feast. Thus we get an epic rolling cheese wheel of death:

Cheese Wheel – Of Death

After escaping the horde in Cheesy Town, Murphy’s baby Momma, Serena, continues to suffer with horrible nausea.

Serena Spewing

Baby On Board

Team Murphy is trying to help with Serena when they are ambushed. This leads to Serena’s awesome rage killing spree as she opens up with an M4, screaming that there is a baby on board. Good times.

Serena is about to pop, so Team Murphy heads for a local Mennonite community, hoping to find friendlies and supplies. This introduces us to another great moment in Zombie Television history, the Zombie Sheep!!!

Zombie Sheep

As if Zombie Sheep wasn’t bad enough, the local zombies spew white powder when they are killed. That white powder just happens to be Anthrax spores, which takes 10K down for the count. The Mennonites have some cipro, but not enough for everyone.

The Search For Antiobiotics

This leads to the next two acts of Zombaby. Addy leads a small group to a local town to find more antibiotics as Doc and Murphy stay back to help Serena give birth.

Unfortunately for 10K, Addy isn’t able to find any antibiotics, and when she makes it back to the farm, 10K looks bad, and Addy collapses. Warren, Doc, and the bounty hunter are all ex military, so they have been vaccinated against Anthrax, but 10K and Addy didn’t serve, so they are suffering.

Warren comes to a difficult decision. The Mennonites have enough antibiotics to save 10K and Addy, but only if they take what they need, which will leave the Mennonites to die. The Mennonites don’t resist because its against their beliefs, they just let Warren take all the meds.

Back in the barn, Serena gives birth to a very Murphy-esque baby. I died laughing when the zombie wise men showed up.

Zombie Wise Men

While everyone was focused on the new baby, a horde of zombies showed up to great the baby, leading to Serena making the ultimate sacrifice so Murphy and their baby can escape.

After escaping the farm, we also get to see Addy giving 10K a box of condoms, and giving him the “don’t be stupid” talk. FYI, I did look for Billy Brand condoms for fun, but they appear to be made up for the show. It was very touching that Addy cares enough about 10K to give him the talk. We also learn that apparently 10K is a virgin, but Addy assures him there are girls out there for him.

10K Getting the Talk

Zombaby ends with Murphy naming his little girl Lucy. The episode ends with the giant wheel of cheese rolling along, taking out a cow before the credits roll.

Zombaby Scoring

Zombaby scored an 85/100 and earned every one of those points.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 2

White Light picks up where The Murphy left off. Citizen Z’s attempt to make sure that Murphy gets to the CDC backfires. Everyone wants the bounty. The bounty hungers are willing to kill anyone who gets in their way. This leads to a crazy free for all.

Free For All

Everyone is trying to get to Murphy at the same time they are trying to kill each other. Bullets are flying. Unfortunately Doc and 10K are pinned down by sniper fire. This leads to one of the most intense scenes in White Light. Doc is strangled, and only just survives. You can’t kill Doc!

He is one my favorite characters. Nothing better happen to Doc! Sadly, not everyone is as lucky as Doc. We lose another member of the crew in the human vs human vs zombie free for all.

While all hell is breaking loose in Cheyenne Wyoming, Citizen Z is fighting for both his life. Camp Northern Light is under attack. Citizen Z fights, and kills several fast, ex military zombies. Lucky for us, he’s up to the task.

After lots of shooting and violence, they catch Murphy. Addy nearly beats him to death. She clearly blames Murphy for making them chase him, which cost Mack his life.

White Light Scoring

I’m giving White Light an 81/100. There was a lot of action, but it bugs me when there is just tons of shooting as people cross open ground. Everyone who films a shooting scene should go play a few rounds of airsoft. Why? Because it is not like the movies. Being in the open means you will be hit.

Z Nation, Season 2, Episode 1

The Murphy kicks off Season 2 of Z Nation.

The nukes are coming down, and the team is about to face some fall out.

Nukes In Rear View

Murphy has run, and Team Warren barely escapes the initial blast, and Cassandra appears to crawl out of the crater of the lab, or at least what was Cassandra.

Citizen Z isn’t faring too much better at Camp Northern Light. The nuke aimed at him appears to have hit a plane, bringing down a horde of zombies. Citizen Z survives, but the base is in bad shape. He barricades himself off from the undead long enough to send out an urgent call to whoever can hear him. He knows Murphy is on the loose, and tells anyone listening that there is a huge reward for getting Murphy to the west coast.

Sisters Of Mercy

Mack and Addy are still at the Sisters of Mercy, but the nukes and one of their exiled children have torched the place, killing almost everyone. Mack and Addy drive away on a four wheeler as the woman that Murphy slept with back in Season 1, Episode 11, creeps out of the tree line, and guess what? Murphy is going to be a daddy!!!

Baby Momma

Murphy on the other hand is buck naked after shedding his skin, and decides to go clothes shopping, with a few zombies in tow. It’s not long before a scavenger finds Murphy, and tries to take him prisoner so he can collect the bounty.

The plan doesn’t go so well after Cassandra shows up. She’s not quite herself, but she does seem to recognize Murphy. This kicks off an interesting bit of Murphy’s quirks as he uses his “Zombie Whispering” to try and get two of the female zombies to kiss.

Team Warren

Warren, Doc, and 10K are somewhere out on the plains with no vehicle and no supplies, and Doc is hurt. Warren leaves them to go find supplies, help, or both. She doesn’t get far before fatigue and depression make her question whether she wants to survive any longer.

Warren At The End Of Her Rope

Warren is about to pull the trigger when she hears a girl’s scream, and it renews Warren’s purpose. All she needed was someone to save, and she goes into b*dass mode.

Warren really was at the end of her rope though. Once the girl is safe Warren passes out, hitting the ground hard.

Warren’s Fancy Machete Work

Lucky for Warren, the kid is kind enough to take her home to safety after she passes out.

While Warren is enjoying the hospitality of the girl’s family Mack and Addy are reunited with Doc and 10K.

10K For The Rescue Kill Shot

Lucky for Warren, she meets back up with Doc, 10K, Mack, and Addy and the team is able to make up some ground using Mack’s 4 wheeler to pull them along.

Team Warren finds Murphy a little ways down the road in Cheyenne Wyoming. Murphy has taken over the local strip club.

Murphy in his Pimp Suit

Practical Clothing?

I think Addy has the best one liner of the episode when she looks at Cassandra’s gold hot pants, and says, “I’m sorry, what is she wearing? Is that mildly impractical for the apocalypse?” Unfortunately for 10K, Cassandra doesn’t seem to really recognize him, and she’s clearly keeping herself between Murphy and the humans.

The episode ends with a zombie strip show that ends in a centrifugal force amputation that leaves the team distracted and vulnerable, giving another band of bounty hunters just the opening the newcomers need to get the drop on Team Murphy.

The confrontation ends with Murphy hitting the Zombie Panic button, leaving all the humans to fight for survival as Cassandra and Murphy flee out the back of the bar. This leads to the third awesome zombie kill of the episode with 10K using a fire extinguisher.

Zombie Fire Extinguisher Kill

The episode ends with Team Warren going to follow Murphy before cutting away to Murphy’s Baby Momma. She’s standing on the road, looking left and right, before she asks her belly, “Which way is daddy?”

We then see the outline of a little hand move across the inside of her belly, pointing the way.

The Murphy Scoring

Wow, the Season 2 opening episode was packed with awesome scenes and storyline. I’m giving The Murphy a 90/100.

Now on to important questions. Let me know in the comments bellow which kill you think was the Best Zombie Kill. We have Warren’s machete work, 10K’s headshot, or 10K’s fire extinguisher kill. For me the fire extinguisher takes it.

Fight me if you disagree.

Black Summer, Season 1, Episode 8

The team is out on the streets, and find themselves surrounded by other survivors, all heading towards the Stadium and its promised evacuation to safety.

Within a minute the first biter rushes the growing crowd of survivors, and the shooting starts.

Black Summer

The problem with shooting is that the sound brings more of the undead in an ever increasing cycle. One of the survivors is tackled. As she goes down she sprays her weapon wildly about, taking the first member of our team with a stray round.

Black Summer Friendly Fire

This is one of those details a lot of shows and movies get wrong. People panic. Stray rounds can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys.

War Zone

In the chaos, Spears and Sun get separated from William and Rose. The streets of downtown are a war zone. People are moving in every which way, and the biters are among them. People are being bitten. The Zombie horde is growing. All the while bombs are falling not too far off.

Poor Lance is on his own. He is being chased by a massive horde. At least until a bomb takes out the group behind him and knocks him from his feet.

They are almost there though, the stadium is within sight.

Rose, Sun, Spears, and William meet back up on the air bridge into the stadium, but things don’t look good. There are biters in front of them, and a massive horde coming up from behind.

The Horde

Sadly, William’s leg has gives out. The horde is close behind them. Rose does the only things she can and puts a bullet in his head. Being eaten alive would suck.

Life is harsh when the biters are close on your heels.

The Stadium

Spears, Sun, and Rose make it into the stadium, but there doesn’t appear to be any military there. The place looks deserted, until Rose sees her daughter come down the steps on the far side of the stadium.

Has Rose found her daughter? Or is this a hallucination? I think its real, my brother thinks she’s dreaming. I guess we have to wait for Season 2 to find out.

The Stadium Scoring

The Stadium scored a 91/100, making it Worth Your Time. Why? Firstly, it was full of for intense zombie violence. I’m talking top notch action scenes. Secondly those scene had tons of hordes, and realism. Why did it lose 9 points? Because it was too short and I want more!!!

I can’t wait for Season 2.
