ZOMBIE MOVIES – Exit Humanity (2011)

I love the premise of Exit Humanity, Malcolm Young is reading his ancestors diary, and when you hear his voice you will immediately recognize Brian Cox’s voice from any of a number of movies (Red, Red 2, Bourne Identity, Super Troopers etc). It is just after the civil war, and the undead have ravaged the land.

Edward Young returns from the war to find his family has already been eaten. Edward decides he must take his son’s ashes to a waterfall he had told the boy about before the war, it is a place of peace for Edward.

On the way, he meets another survivor, only to find out that the war isn’t quite over yet. Isaac’s sister has been taken, and he needs Edward’s help to rescue her from a General trying to use the Undead to continue the fight against the north.

The filming and action is top notch. The zombies are well done and die with appropriate levels of gore. So why did Exit Humanity earn a 69/100? First of all let me say the movie is enjoyable to watch, but there were a few things which could have made it even better.

There are potential spoilers below, so stop reading here until you watch the movie…

  1. The first 30 minutes could have been condensed down to 5. I know its character development – but its a zombie movie for god’s sake, lets get to the zombies.
  2. The suicide scene was a little over the top. I get it, his wife and child were bitten and turned. Again, its a zombie movie, so we don’t need agonizing emotional development.
  3. Too much story development at times, the movie could have been cut down and focused on the zombies, which I think would have made it a better movie in the long run.
  4. Concentrate more on the zombies!!!!

ZOMBIE MOVIES – I Am Alone (2015)

I Am Alone feels like an advanced college movie project. The filming is top notch, but there is a good bit of overacting, and the zombies are clearly on the low budget side.

I Am Alone scores a 48/100. The movie takes way too long to build up to the zombies, and then failed to achieve the primary goals of a zombie film. In order, they should be, survive the initial raging biting, run from the horde, hole up and hide from the horde, and then fight their way to a better, safer place, or get eaten trying.

I Am Alone tried to achieve some of these things, but the first person shooting style and lack of decent zombie hordes cost this movie a lot of points.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Plan Z (2016)

I’m not sure how I missed Plan Z when it came out, but I’m not sure if it was widely advertised here in the states as it is based in the British Isles. Plan Z is exactly what a good, low budget zombie movie should be. The main character, Craig, travels and his work as a photographer gives him contacts that are able to warn him when bad things are coming.

That warning saves him when the zombie virus turns the populace into hungry hordes.

Craig holes up in his apartment as others try and run, and are eaten alive. He only decides to leave when one of his friends calls him, begging for help. He manages to save his friend Bill,

The first half hour of the movie is perfect. It it exactly what a zombie movie should be, nothing but zombies and survival.

I liked the touch that they begin their escape plan on day 28, paying homage to one of the greats, 28 Days Later.

The plot jumps a bit after that, but the movie stayed mostly true to itself. There are a few scenes of over acting, but overall this is a good Zombie Movie that was enjoyable to watch. The low budget cost it some points, as well as some of the acting and the plot jumps, but don’t let the 78/100 keep you away from this film. It is well worth a watch.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Last Rites of the Dead (2019)

Last Rites Of The Dead is really just a re released movie called Zombies Anonymous from back in 2006. Why was it re released? That is a great question. This is more of a discourse on how we treat each other than a zombie movie. If you like traditional zombie movies this is not for you.

So how did it rank? I am giving it a 20 out of 100, mostly because it really was trying to be a good flick.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Overlord (2018)

I’ve had Overlord on my list to watch for a while, and regretted not watching it sooner.

It is near the end of World War 2 and the allies are planning their invasion of Europe. A small group of paratroopers are being dropped behind enemy lines to destroy a radar facility. The the soldiers get on the ground they find out the Germans have more than just a radar facility in town. The Germans are working on something terrible, something unnatural.

Sure, this is basically Wolfenstein made into a movie, but it was well done and the writers did a good job not being predictable . Some scenes were set up so you thought the “typical” horror movie scenario would play out, and they left it alone. I respect them for that.

Overlord is an enjoyable movie, and earned a solid 79/100. Where did it lose some points? Honestly, I took a good chunk off because, well, Nazi zombies. The other reason I took points off was there were not hordes. I like at least one good horde in my zombie movies, and this was much more a “super soldier zombie” movie.

Don’t get me wrong though, this is a fun movie, and worth watching.
