The opening scene of Day of the Dead is something I’ve had stuck in my brain from the very first time I saw it. The streets are deserted, and the remaining survivors are desperate to find others like them, living, breathing, people. But the only people left to respond are the dead, and they come in droves.

So many, so loud, their helicopter pilot can hear it over the engines.

Such an epic way to set the stage. The world has ended.

A small number of survivors has holed up at a military base, but their moral is declining, and the zombies at the fences just keep growing in numbers.

Inside the compound, which appears to be an old mine turned into a military base, the soldiers are on edge, and the doctor is trying to find a solution, whatever that solution is.

Sarah played by Lori Cardille, really carries the movie and its flow. She’s both strong and resolute, and her acting is just top notch.

The crazed doctor, Logan, played by Richard Liberty, is experimenting with the zombies, which is also creating friction with the soldiers.

Equipment is falling apart, and supplies are running out, and that is driving all of them to the brink. In order to try and make progress, more undead need to be captured for the doctor, and every time they harvest more zombies, there is more risk.

This is a classic Zombie Movie that many others have tried to mimic and which is well worth your time. Day of the Dead scores a 77/100. What took a few points off? Two main factors, the first was the length of time the story runs before we see some real zombie violence. Its a great story, and Sarah carries it well, but there is a almost an hour of lead up to the zombie carnage, and that is a bit too much. The second is the crazed doctor. Too much time was spent on the crazed doctor and the zombie anatomy. Don’t get me wrong, this is a Must See movie, but I’m also watching it for like the 10th time as I’m writing this review, and that might be hurting the score a little.
