Blood Quantum is an interesting movie. It starts from the beginning, the very beginning, and takes its time to build up to zombie hordes. The movie honestly could have started at the “6 Month” later interlude, which happens shortly after the 30 minute mark, and it would have been just as good if not better.
The action takes place on the Red Crow reserve. The Native Americans are somehow immune to whatever is driving the undead apocalypse, and a small number of them are holding onto their territory.
The early action is a little slow, but several of the characters are awesome, and there is plenty of blood and gore in the tail of the movie that was worth waiting for.
My personal favorite was Stonehorse Lone Goeman who plays “Gisigu”, the badass grandfather who takes care of the undead with his katana.
So what cost Blood Quantum points, putting it into Rainy Day Movie territory? The first is just the fact that the first 30 minutes of the movie are pretty much optional. The second was the fact that the Indians, who are immune, are letting non immune people into the compound without making them strip down to prove they haven’t been bitten, or putting newcomers into quarantine for a few days in case they are bitten. It just doesn’t make sense in a world where a bite means you are going to turn.
Sure, the zombie biting the guys d*ck off was an interesting touch, but you only get so many points for innovation. Blood Quantum earned itself a 68/100, putting it 3 points into Worth Your Time territory.
