Resident Evil: Retribution kicks off pretty much exactly where Resident Evil: Afterlife ended. Alice is on the cargo ship, at least for ten seconds. Then we jump to a weird “home” scene where Alice has a kid, and is forced to flee a zombie horde.
The opening feels very disjointed, as it is apparently resetting the timeline. Alice doesn’t seem to remember who she is, or anything that happened in the past – but at this point I’m not sure if its real, a memory, or some dream?
Well, it turns out it wasn’t real, and it takes up the first 15 to 16 minutes of a 95 minute movie. So a big chunk of the movie is basically a false start and it felt like it was there just to add length.
When Alice wakes up from her dream she’s in an Umbrella facility, at least until the mainframe reboots and she’s let loose. The problem I have with these types of false starts is that it creates a half second of doubt for me that the next part of the movie is just going to do the same thing again.
Obviously, the further into the movie you get, the less likely that gets, but who knows? Right?
The movie really starts about 30 minutes in. Alice has been captured and is in an umbrella testing simulator. It gives the movie tons of options, as the simulator can basically make anything else happen. A lot of logical details are skilled, like if it is a simulator, how can the monsters kill you?
Okay, so later on you do see that apparently all the monsters are clones? It didn’t really help the movie though. Whoever green lighted this movie forgot that this was a movie that was supposed to center around the T Virus and undead zombies. Yes, there were some, but the focus was on the plot about Alice and the kid – which would have been fine if the number of zombies had been multiplied by about a thousand.
Where this movie ends is where it should have started, and I’m hoping that the next, and last film (currently) doesn’t fall for the “kill the boss, kill all the bad guys” trope.
As it was, this was a movie best saved for a Rainy Day, as it scored a middling 61/100.
