Evilution starts out strong, with an opening that is perfect for just about any Zombie Movie. Within the first minute there are Zombies rushing through the halls, overrunning the military installation.
We then see a military doctor flee the installation a moment before the whole site is bombed, which ends the first act within four or five minutes.
The second act is when things start to fall apart. Our main character has fled to a low rent hotel, named the Necropolitan. The hotel manager says some wacky stuff, and this is where things go sideways.
The next forty five minutes to an hour is about our military doctor interacting with the the other hotel guests. Of course the pretty girl falls for the Doc, while the resident gangsters don’t really like him. If you liked Weeds, you will recognize Killah-B, played by Guillermo Díaz, but this honestly isn’t his best work.
The 2nd Act
We don’t get to see more Zombie violence until about the forty five minute mark, but once again the movie tries to do too many things. It turns from a Zombie Movie to an alien infection movie? The Zombies are infected with an alien being?
So if the Doc knows about the alien why does he still infect it into our gangster friend? Then decide to go and disappear for a while (Yes I know he was distracted by the booty call, but still, he saw what happened the first time people were infected.) so it can rapidly get out of hand again.
Unfortunately Evilution was all over the place, and didn’t really succeed in any of the various genres it was trying to cover. As a Zombie Movie it started strong but then didn’t do anything with it until almost the end of the movie, then it turned into a haunted house story, that just kind of ended on a well played trope without adding to the story except for distraction and confusion.
The ending? Well I found it really unsatisfying. Don’t try to make my Zombie Movies into something touching or artsy? What were they going for? I don’t know, I just know I didn’t like it.
Evilution Scoring
Evilution earned itself a 34/100. Putting it just one point into Just Bad territory. If you have absolutely nothing to do on a Rainy Day, and maybe are a bit drunk, watch Evilution and let me know if you agree with my scoring.
