With a name like Army of the Dead there has to be some Zombies right?
Not so much. This is more of a skeletons versus humans movie, so if you are looking for a good Zombie flick, this is not it.
Army of the Dead feels like someone tried to write a modern day love letter to Ray Harryhausen. The special effects in this movie look like they were pulled directly from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. If you aren’t familiar, the movie, and Mr. Harryhausen used stop motion animation to make the monsters real. Especially the skeletons. The problem is that what felt like cutting edge special effects in 1958 don’t look so great when reused in a 2008 production.
What makes the special effects worse is how they used very dark backgrounds to try to mask it. Instead of just owning the special effects for what they were they try to take the focus off of them by having very dark backgrounds. It makes the movie feel washed out in many of those scenes.
