Zombie Movies – Ravenous (2017)

Ravenous takes place in small town Quebec, so the original movie is in French with English subtitles, but don’t let that keep you away. Ravenous has great character development and great action scenes, which isn’t always true of some zombie films.

The first half hour has some great scenes. One of them involves a the main characters fleeing through the woods as a horde runs after them through the trees, it was well shot and gave me the creeps.

I actually really liked the fact that they don’t try to explain the why its happening, the movie instead concentrates on what surviving takes, and how simple choices can mean life or death.

The ending is a bit strange, but came full circle, which I liked. Overall I’m giving Ravenous a 68/100. The movie is well worth watching if your a zombiephile.

Things to like about Ravenous:

  • Good character development.
  • Well done action and violence.
  • One of the most bad ass fighters is a woman.
  • Well acted and well written.

Zombie Movies – The Night Eats The World (2018)

The Night Eats The World gets off to a good start. A man goes to his ex girlfriends to pick up things she accidentally took when she moved out. When he gets to her new apartment there is a massive party going on, and instead of just giving him his things, she gets pulled into the revelry and he ends up falling asleep at the far end of a sprawling apartment.

When he wakes up he finds the apartment has been trashed, and the walls are covered in blood. He’s lucky though. The undead followed others out of the apartment and he was able to lock the door before any made it back inside.

The good start ends about there.

After he manages to secure his girlfriends apartment he works on clearing the other apartments.

The undead themselves are creepy and violent. There just isn’t enough of them. The movie is very much about the survivor’s ability to cope with being alone.

The Night Eats The World had huge potential but it fell a little short. With a little more action and a slightly different ending this could have been a great movie instead of just a good one.

At a 67/100 I’m going to say save it for a rainy day.

Bird Box (2018)

My brother turned us on to the Bird Box yesterday and my son, his girlfriend, my wife, my brother, and myself ended up spread out over my living room, hissing at whomever dared to open their mouth and distract everyone else from the movie.

Sandra Bullock plays a pregnant woman who is forced to survive as madness grips the world. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, but still falls prey to some of the classic horror movie tropes. Be forewarned, if you keep reading, there are spoilers below.

I know that the group of survivors doesn’t really understand what is going on, but they know whatever it is, can kill you. So what do they do when they want to test Greg’s theory about using the security cameras? They tie him to a chair and leave him there.

What do they do with the car keys? They apparently left them where anyone could grab them.

What did they do when they let a newcomer into the group? They leave him along to work whatever mischief he wants.

Are they huge issues? Not really, the story moves fast and is edgy enough that you don’t notice, at least not until later. It is just one of those things that bothers me about survival movies. Don’t be stupid when people are dying all around you.

Is this a classic zombie movie? No. But whatever is possessing the people does cause them to turn violent and deadly. So this is a “zombie” movie of the possession type, very similar to Ghosts of Mars.

Do you ever get to see the monsters? Just through a madman’s drawings. Anyone who goes outside without a blindfolded gets taken over. It is a basic premise, but creates a massive amount of anxiety and suspense.

So what are the monsters possessing people? One of the frustrating things is that you never find out. Charlie goes on a rant very early in the movie, and it is pretty much the only time they address what is going on. The monsters appear as swirling bits of wind. The birds seem to be sensitive to their presence and give some early warning when they are close. Without much to go on I have to go with the little bit that Charlie gave us. It is the end of the world, and demons are cleansing the world. The things doing the possession were demons, and those who were truly bad in life were taken over completely.

It might sound corny, but it was really well done and the fact that they don’t spend a lot of time trying to explain it was actually good for the plot, if frustrating for those of us still digesting the movie a day later.

Overall, it was a good movie and kept us all on the edge of our seats and scores a solid 69/100. If you haven’t watched Bird Box yet, it is well worth watching.

The Babadook (2014)

I had high hopes for this movie. It is critically acclaimed and everyone is raving about how amazing this horror movie was. So when I was invited to screen it I was quite excited.

The Babadook starts off strong, building an emotional groundwork of sorrow and anxiety built around the death of a father on the drive to take his pregnant wife to have their child. The child is high maintenance and clearly has emotional issues – but at first you think the mother is dealing with it fairly well.

Of course, right after that, things take a turn for the worse as the child’s obsession with monsters and weaponry get him kicked out of school. To make things worse, it is the approaching the child’s birthday, and that pushes the barely holding it together mother over the edge.

And that is just about where the movie lost it for me. Every movie has to have internal rules, and the movie has to follow them. Vampires can be killed with stakes through the heart, zombies die when you crush their skulls. Horror movies usually have some rule that brings the badness, which the main characters dutifully perform to kick off the fun.

And that is where The Babadook loses me. It sells itself as a horror movie, but it is really just a psycho mother having a psychotic break and almost killing her kid. But it never really commits in either direction.

When she goes to the police station she lowers her hands, and you aren’t sure if the blackness you see is soot – or the pastels from her making the actual book. And then of course there is the fact that her friends mention that she used to be a children’s book author.

And that is why I didn’t like the movie. I felt like it didn’t commit. There is enough mind bending stuff that it could have been something supernatural – but in the end I felt like the movie copped out and left it as just mommy having a psychotic break. It could have had a more satisfying ending to me.
