I am always searching for a good Zombie Movie. When I find something I’m always happy. So when my search engine spit back All My Friends Are Dead I was excited. All My Friends Are Dead sounds like a Zombie Movie doesn’t it?

Sadly, this turned out to be a more standard slasher style horror, featuring multiple little vignettes as the campers try to tell stories to scare each other. I was really hoping one of the stories was going to be a Zombie story, but none of them were.

This was a low budget film with very limited special effects. The dialogue at times was Just Bad, while the acting is what I’d call top notch for college actors, but not on the level of what you’d see in a real Hollywood movie.

Because this was click bait from the search engine perspective and didn’t have any Zombies at all, this movie earned a 0/100. This is not a Zombie Movie. That makes it Just Bad.

Eat Brains Love takes a slightly different view of the classic Zombie movie. It isn’t bites that spread the infection, but instead the Zombie Virus is spread as a sexually transmitted disease.

What happens when the geeky boy and hot girl both catch an STD that makes them want brains? They don’t have a choice. They go on the run together – which leads to fun and antics.

The government has psychics who hunt the infected. This leads to an interesting but strange love triangle between the main characters and one of the agents.

At the same time, there isn’t a lot of depth to Eat Brains Love and they either thought they’d be setting up the end of the movie for a sequel, they just ran out of money, or the writers just didn’t know how to end it. It would have scored much better if the ending had been more well rounded. As it is, the movie scores a 56/100, putting it firmly in Rainy Day Movie territory.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021)

I really liked the way that Wyrmwood: Apocalypse starts. I love the soldiers camp and how he has set up his outpost. At the same time there is plenty of action and gore in this sequel to Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is Worth Your Time and scored a 77/100. The acting was excellent, there are lots of Zombies and violence, and there is no lack of gore. So what cost it a few points? The movie was actually heading to a much stronger score until the last act when the writers decided to make the story about the “Uber Zombie” boss battle. I felt like this was a bit formulaic but I still really liked the movie and highly recommend it if you haven’t already watched it.

Curse of the Blind Dead (2020)

The intro and the cover art for Curse of the Blind Dead looked fairly promising. Sadly, is not a Zombie movie. It is just straight up horror movie.

What’s worse? It is so dialogue heavy I couldn’t even get into it.

I was hoping it was going to be a Zombie movie with a bit of sword fighting action. What I got instead was a poorly done Knight Templars movie with a barely understandable plot.

In the 14th century, a group of Satan worshipers, the Knight Templars, is captured during a ritual and brutally murdered by the locals. Just before the execution, the Knights swear to return from their graves to haunt the village and the nearby forest. Centuries later, in a post-apocalyptic future, a man and his daughter try to survive against both the Undead Knights and a sect commanded by a mad preacher.

What is worse than a movie that doesn’t live up to expectations? A movie with a run time over two hours. I think I made it through forty minutes before I just couldn’t take it anymore. Let me know in the comments if you were able to finish it. Being tied to a chair with this running does not count.

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is an Australian Zombie Movie. Barry, played by Jay Gallagher is a talented mechanic who sets out to save his sister in the midst of the Zombie Apocalypse. As the story progresses we get introduced to several other small bands of survivors. The story weaves the tales together nicely.

Wyrmwood is brutal and pulls no punches. No one is safe from the Undead. There are also several interesting twists, but I don’t want to spoil them for anyone in case they haven’t partaken yet.

If you haven’t had a chance to see Road of the Dead yet, definitely put it on your list and let me know how you ranked it. For me, Road of the Dead scored a 70/100, making it Worth Your Time. The primary drivers for why it scored well were its brutality, its avoidance of many Zombie Movie Tropes, and the fact that I didn’t see the twist coming.

Rise of The Zombies has an all star cast that includes Danny Trejo, Levar Burton, and Mariel Hemingway, so I had high hopes that I had found a gem.

Then I watched the first ten minutes and realized this was a low budget movie. That doesn’t mean bad, and the director did a great job with what money they did have.

The story is fairly straight forward. San Francisco has been overrun, and the survivors flee to Alcatraz. The lead scientists, played by Levar Burton, is searching for a cure. Boy is it weird to see Levar shoot a shotgun. It just feels wrong! Anyway, once Alcatraz is overrun the majority of the survivors flee back to the mainland while Levar stays behind to continue his work.

One of the highlights of the movie is the caesarian birth scene followed by some baby Zombie stomping. I wish I hadn’t been laughing, but that is what happens sometimes.

Rise of the Zombies Scoring

Overall I’m giving Rise of The Zombies a 48/100, making it a solid Rainy Day Movie, which was perfect, because it rained while I was watching it.

What cost Rise of The Zombies points? Sadly, it does feel dated, but the majority of the points get taken off due to the overuse of the “Zombie the team missed” trope, as well as inconsistent rules. How can Zombies climb the Golden Gate Bridge but not a fence? Then there is the overly detailed scientific explanations. It’s a Zombie Movie, we don’t need to go too deep guys.

Carriers (2009)

Carriers has some big name actors. Chris Pine plays Brian, the leader of the small group of survivors. A virus has devastated the planet and the survivors are deathly scared of being exposed to the incurable pathogen.

As the small group of survivors make their way downt he highway they come across Frank, played by Christopher Meloni of Law & Order fame. Frank needs help, he has a young daughter, and the girl is sick.

The movie is well acted, and I was really hoping it was taking a turn for the Zombie, especially here:

Carriers

Unfortunately this is a different type of apocalypse movie.

The world is ending, but there are no Zombies. Survivors struggle and fight each other while dealing with all the standard deathly pandemic tropes. There is hope of a cure. The secretly infected who hides it from their fellow survivors. There is not a lot of new or novel approaches here.

Carriers Scoring

Sadly, at the end of the day Carriers is not a Zombie Movie, it is just a post apocalyptic movie about a virus that has killed off most of the population, and how the survivors struggle. This means that Carriers is getting a 0/100 and is going into the Just Bad category as it isn’t a Zombie Movie at all.

Quarantine 2 (2011)

Quarantine 2 starts slow, telling the story of two airline stewardesses as they start their day, eventually leading to the start of the movie. Someone brought the virus onboard, and its not long before the plane is making an emergency medical landing.

From there, it is a fairly standard Zombie Infection story. The small group of survivors slowly gets taken down, and of course we have the emotional, bit, not leaving you storyline – which is just dumb at this point. If I see a bunch of my group get eaten alive after bites spread the infection, I’m not going to hesitate to leave you behind if you are essentially a stranger to me.

Quarantine 2 Scoring

Quarantine 2 scores a 64/100, putting it at the higher end of the Rainy Day Movie zone. The slow start, repetitive bad decisions, and the very formulaic ending cost this movie. There is nothing new here, but there are some good action scenes, even if there are no hoards. At max you see maybe four or five Zombies at any one time. That can work, but it has to be a good movie. Throw a few good hoards in and you get a few bonus points in my book.

Compared to the original Quarantine this fell by 3 points.

Quarantine (2008)

Quarantine starts with a local news reporter Angela Vidal, played by Jennifer Carpenter, as she embeds with a fire department. The first ten minutes or so are fun and games, and things don’t get dark until the department gets a late night call.

An old woman has been screaming from inside her apartment, and the police have called fire rescue to help get through the door.

Quarantine

Quarantine from here on in is a fairly formulaic story. There is biting, and chaos as the infection spreads and when the survivors try to fly, they find the city has turned on them. Nobody is coming to help.

Quarantine Scoring

I won’t spoil the ending, but what I will do is tell you I gave Quarantine a 67/100, making it perfect for a Rainy Day. It is at the high end of the Rainy Day scale however, so its got that going for it.

Why?

For me the shaky camera style of filming makes me motion sick, so it lost points for that. It also lost points for the repetitive mistakes. Once you know the infection spreads by bites and fluids, stop getting close to those people. The other thing that cost Quarantine points is that there were no horde scenes, and the combat scenes were all jump scares and relatively jerky and quick.

On the plus side the acting and special effects are top notch and if you are a fan of Jennifer Carpenter, which I am, you will enjoy just watching her work.

Amigo Undead (2015)

Amigo Undead is a low budget Undead Demon/Zombie comedy flick. Norm, played by Steve Agee has a plan to mend a few bridges with his adopted little brother. The first step is tricking his brother to come visit his new homestead out in the desert. The second step is just staying alive.

Amigo Undead (2015)

The main characters are Randall Park (Jim from The Office) and Steve Agee as estranged brothers. I was shocked to see Jim from the Office in this low budget Zombie (ish) film to be honest. Instead of putting their differences behind them, the brothers awaken a demon. This forces them to focus on surviving with several comedic results. It is not a barrel of laughs, but there are some funny spots to enjoy.

Sadly, the move spent too much time on the family background. This causes the movie to get off to a slow start. A slow start that never picks up the pace. Eventually, I did laugh a few times, but I’m not sure if I was laughing with the movie, or at it to be honest. I was also drinking, which helped me enjoy it more than I might have otherwise.

Amigo Undead Scoring

If you are drunk (like I was) and take it for a low budget comedy, it is worth the time on a Rainy Day. Amigo Undead scored a 54/100, putting almost dead center in Rainy Day Movie territory.
