The Battery (2012)

The Battery is the story of two survivors, making their way across a decimated country. The country is overrun by the undead. Ben and Mickey have fled into the wilderness in the hopes that there will be less Zombies. Ben appears to be the more resilient, better prepared survivor. Mickey is a bit more fragile and not quite as ready to deal with the realities of the current world.

Spoilers Below

The story revolves around the two finding an old Volvo station wagon while trying to deal with each other. Nerves are raw, and they’ve been through a lot. Ben believes that the key to survival is to keep moving, but Mickey wants to settle down.

I Had To Kill The Dog

Ben and Micky are an odd couple. They knew each other pre Apocalypse, but weren’t really in the same social circle. The tension continues to grow the longer they are forced to survive together.

The last act of The Battery has our two survivors trapped after Mickey gets to meet the woman on the other side of the radio. Sadly for him, things don’t go quite like he had imagined. I’m not going to ruin the end of the movie, because this is Worth Your Time and you should go watch it.

For such a small budget film, the actors and director did an amazing job. The whole thing was shot over the course of fifteen days for $6,000 in the wilds of Connecticut. Does that make it a passion project? How the hell did they make this film for that amount of money?

The Battery Scoring

The Battery isn’t your standard Zombie Movie, but it hits on multiple cylinders and has a little twist at the end, earning The Battery a 74/100. This makes it Worth Your Time. Make sure you watch to the end of the first segment of credits to make sure you get the full ending.

Before Dawn (2013)

I have to be honest, I’m 30 minutes into Before Dawn and it feels more like a Hallmark Movie about a couple going through a divorce than a Zombie Movie. It’s not till the 35 minute mark that Meg, played by Joanne Mitchell decides to go for a run and encounters her first Zombie. her reaction is, well, interesting. She has that moment of disbelief, but when she turns to run she seems more puzzled than scared.

The acting was average to better than average but the story is just slow and plodding. There isn’t any new ground covered here, and that costs Before Dawn when it comes to the final scoring. The last half of the movie does have a bit more action, but it’s nothing ground breaking.

Before Dawn scored a 41/100, putting it at the lower end of the Rainy Day Movie list.

Witness Infection (2021)

Witness Infection opens with a local country boy walking through the woods. He’s taking his new neighbor who just moved into town from New Jersey out into the woods to hunt. Whether it’s the bad sandwich or something else, our friendly hunter ends up being eaten by his new friend.

Sometimes the past comes back to bite you. Two rival mob families are transferred from the Witness Protection Agency by mistake to same city, Temecula, CA.

When we come back from the opening scene we are introduced to Carlo, played by Robert Belushi. Yes, he is a member of the famous Belushi clan, and is the nephew of the great John Belushi. His father is an Italian Mobster who needs him to marry his adversaries daughter to help create peace. Both mobster families have been put in the same town by the FBI. The struggle is how to figure out how to live together. Apparently an alliance based on marriage is the best idea.

We are then treated to a montage of townspeople eating sausage and peppers – which I am guessing is how the Zombie virus spreads?

The family dinner is a disaster, but at least it was a a bit amusing. Carlo doesn’t want to marry just to create a family alliance. In the end he doesn’t have a whole lot of choice if he wants to keep all his family alive.

We are at minute 31 when the Zombies show in force and things start to get more Zombie Movie than Soprano Slapstick.

Everyone who ate the sausages appears to be turning, or in the process of turning. Unfortunately, not even puppies are safe.

As the infection takes hold, Carlo and his small gang of survivors face off against crazed mobsters, zombies, and crazed mobster zombies.

Witness Infection Scoring

Witness Infection is an odd blend of Zombie Movie, Mobster Movie, and comedy, and it mostly works. The contaminated food thing is a little bit played out, and the movie struggles just a bit to hit its stride between serious, funny, and slapstick, but that is just me being hyper critical. Witness Infection scored a 71/100, making it Worth Your Time.

Pandemic (2009)

Pandemic is a very common name in this genre, so make sure you are looking at the movie from 2009. Pandemic from 2009 is the story about a cute veterinarian who finds herself in the midst of an infectious outbreak in the small town of Diablo.

This movie is over a decade old at this point, and while you might recognize Ray Wise, who plays General Matthews from what I think is his most iconic role as Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks, most of the other cast members haven’t been in anything super memorable.

Sydney Stevens played by Alesha Rucci, is the town vet, who first encounters the virus when it infects the horse of a local rancher who also happens to be conspiracy theorist.

Sydney does what every good veterinarian does when she hears that a human has been infected, and heads to the coroners office. This kicks off a call to the CDC, which ends up with the military swooping down on the town to isolate it.

Our conspiracy theorist believes the military let loose the virus to test how it impacts humans, and it’s not too long before we get confirmation that at the very least, the military has more knowledge than they let on when the vaccinate the local coroners assistant, who seems to know the players involved suspiciously well.

Pandemic is actually a decent movie if you are in the mood for a suspenseful drama. However, if you’re in the mood for a Zombie movie, don’t let Pandemic fool you. Regardless of the cool images in the promo, this isn’t a zombie movie, so it scores a 1/100, making it Just Bad if your a Zombiephile.

Cooties (2014)

Cooties is one of those movies that somehow slipped by me when it came out. I was stunned as I watched it. The cast is full of top notch talent showing off their comedy chops. Cooties has that rare mix of action and humor that is just so hard to find.

Elijah Wood plays Clint, a down on his luck writer who is subbing at his hometown middle school. He’s really an author, but needs to pay the bills as he tries to finish his next book. Once in the school he encounters Lucy, played by Alison Pill. Clint immediately falls for Lucy. Unfortunately for Clint, Lucy is dating Wade, played Rainn Wilson. Wade is the gym teacher, and a smuck.

The first 20 minutes set up the story, but its worth the wait. The kids have been infected with tainted nuggets! This turns them into crazed (more than normal) little monsters who crave human flesh. I love how the movie opens with Wade shooting hoops. He is completely unaware of what is going down behind him.

When Wade finally turns around, he’s surrounded by hungry kids as the rest of the teachers watch from the lounge.

You Can't Eat The Teachers — You Can’t Eat The Teachers

The teachers have a brief moment of hope when a police cruiser pulls up. It doesn’t last long. Wade then puts the surviving teachers in danger. He opens the lounge door, letting the infected in. The teachers are forced to run for it, fleeing up to the second floor, hungry children hot on their heels.

Wade and Clint then go out, each of them having a slightly different strategy for survival. Wade is an Orc, ready for battle, and he accuses Clint of being a little Hobbit – yes he did.

While the teachers are struggling, the crossing guard (played by Jorge Garcia) is high as a kite. He’s not sure if he’s hallucinating or really seeing the kids tear into the adults. How else can you come to terms with kids turning the playground into a bloodbath?

The creepy science/sex Ed teacher then does an autopsy and comes to the conclusion that only pre pubescent kids are turned into monsters when infected – it’s just the flu for adults and older kids.

From the moment the teachers realize what’s going on, Cooties is non stop action with a ton of one liners thrown in to make you laugh. I had to watch it twice just to make sure I picked up on most of them.

Cooties is everything a good Zombie Comedy should be. There are laughs, but the Zombies are still the focus, and the writers did an awesome job of keeping Cooties fresh and original.

Cooties Scoring

Cooties scored an 89/100 and is Worth Your Time. Elijah Wood may have played the main character, but Rainn Wilson stole the show. Now I get to look forward to Cooties 2 hopefully coming out.

G – Zombie is a movie shot in India. I don’t mind reading subtitles, so I was more than happy to give the movie a shot. I turned it on, and did my best to follow along.

The movie, regardless of everything else, is slow to get to a boil. But the main issue is the language barrier. Maybe this movie makes perfect sense if you are a native Hindi speaker, but the subtitles appear to have been generated by a very bad auto interpretation system? Or maybe someone who barely speaks English and likes to drink?

The movie has a plot, but the constant guessing at what the actors are actually saying makes it hard to enjoy.

The Last Hope (2017)

The Last Hope was originally released in 2017, but for some reason Amazon lists it as released in 2020? Is that when they purchased the rights or released it maybe?

Sadly, the The Last Hope could have been so much more than it was. There are some really wonderful Zombie hordes and fight scenes, but the story and dialogue are so all over the place that it is hard to follow.

Whoever made this movie also has a very poor outlook on men. There is a very strong rapey vibe at multiple points, which makes me worry for the writer/director. That came from somewhere, and it’s likely not for a good reason.

There is a lot of shaky camera work, and at times the audio seems muddled. The close in physical effects were all good (lots of blood) but the CGI gunshots were laughable at times.

Overall the attempt at a deeper story hurt The Last Hope a lot, it would have been so much more if it just stuck to a simple “Zombie Survival” theme and didn’t try to get a little deeper.

The Last Hope scored a 24/100, putting it in Just Bad territory. If your drunk and don’t want to follow the plot, a few of the fight scenes are worth watching however.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse opens with Blake Anderson (Workaholics fame) singing into his mop. And quite well I must say. He’s a janitor at a research facility, and its not long before things go badly for our beloved janitor. As a researcher struggles with a snack machine, our Department of Defense patient gets wakes up. The janitor’s antics were just too much to sleep through.

Spoilers Below

With the stage set, we cut over to a scout recruiting session that transitions into the weekend camping trip planning. Sadly for Augie, his two friends, Ben and Carter are ready to quit the scouts. They just don’t know how to tell Augie yet. Their plan gets interrupted when they drive into a deer. This introduces the “popular” kids to the mix.

Things keep getting weirder. Because the deer gets up after being hit by a car. I guess the Zombie Virus isn’t isolated to humans?

It’s not long before the scout leader encounters the deer in the woods. This leads to a knife fight as the scout leader puts it down with his lucky knife. I believe this is the first time I’ve seen a Zombie Deer kill, and that is just special. Who doesn’t remember losing their Zombie Deer Death Virginity right?

Pocket Knife Vs. Zombie Deer

Unfortunately for Scout Leader Rogers, the doctor from the research facility is nearby. Scout Leader Rogers doesn’t get any time to celebrate his victory over the deer. He fares less well against a Zombie Human than a Zombie Deer.

The Kind Stripper

Back in town, Ben and Carter attempt to buy some beer. This introduces us to the town’s cool stripper who helps the kids out -because that’s what strippers do.

After setting up camp with Augie, Ben and Carter sneak off. They think they are heading to the secret high school party. After getting caught sneaking off by Augie, Ben and Carter end up in town – back at the strip club.

The first few minutes of Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse was epic. Then there is a bit of a lull as the storyline is set up. Things really kick off around the 30 minute mark with the introduction of the Zombie Stripper.

This leads an awesome Zombie Kill that was fairly unique. How often do you see the broken bottle turn into a blood spout?

While Carter is kicking some Zombie butt, the lovely Denise Russo, played by Sarah Dumont saves Ben. She definitely qualifies as a Hotty with a Shotty. Once outside, the small group of survivors realizes what they are up against. Only head shots can kill a Zombie!

Zombies Are Real

The group flees a moment later after they spot a small horde. They don’t get far before they lose their mini spare tire. Lucky for them, Denise is a total bad ass, which gives them time to fix the tire.

Meanwhile Augie has also headed into town only to find himself at Scout Leader Roger’s house. Just in time for Zombie Scout Leader to attack him.

Surrounded

Meanwhile, Ben, Carter, and Denise flee to the police station. Sadly, there are no cops to save them. With a horde behind them, they flee to the only safety there is. This gets them stuck in a jail cell, surrounded by the undead.

Augie ends up saving the group, which leads to an odd scene where Carter squeezes a trapped Zombie Cop’s boobs. Really?

Free of the police station, the group comes upon a lone Zombie. This leads to a Brittany Spears sing along with a Zombie. At least until a soldier shows up to rescue them. Unfortunately for the group, the soldier has already been bit. After killing him they find out that the military has a plan to bomb the town in a few hours.

The group decides their only solution is to find the hidden party, to try and safe their friends. You know, the friends who didn’t invite them to the party. Movie logic right?

While searching for the party location, our group of survivors ends up in a fight at one of their houses. This leads to a nice decapitation before they escape via a trampoline.

Losing Her Head Over it

This leads to one of the more memorable moments in the movie. Ben is forced to hold onto an old man’s genitalia as he’s hanging out a window. This was one of those gags I could have done without. Memorable doesn’t always mean good.

This leads the group to the crazy cat ladies house, and her cats want revenge!

Cat Attack!

After escaping the cat house, the team hits the local hardware store. They need weapons so they can go save the kids at the high school party. As our group prepares, we get treated to another over the top gag. Let’s just say a young lady gets oral that turns into being eaten alive for real. Wow, this movie really didn’t hold back anything.

Lucky for the popular kids, our group of Scouts show up just in time to save them from the Zombie horde!

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Scoring

Overall, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse scored a 70/100, making it Worth Your Time. But just barely. If you like raunchy, you are going to love this movie. For me, the over the top gags were a bit too much here and there. Although some of them did make me laugh at the same time I was cringing.

The Living Dead (2020)

The Living Dead is one of those blends of genre that probably sounded really cool when it was pitched. We are going to take a group of thieves, have them attempt a heist in an Undead infested estate, and see if they can survive.

What could be cooler than a heist movie with Zombies? It is interesting to not that this movie came out a year before Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves. Clearly that extra year of thought (and much higher budgets) paid off for the “Army of” movies.

This isn’t your standard Zombie Movie. It is quirky and at times hard to follow exactly what the writers were going for.

The Living Dead Scoring

Trust me when I say you can bypass this movie, and thank me for taking a bullet for you in the process. I’m giving The Living Dead an 18/100. It is slow, not a great blend of two genres, and the story and characters overall aren’t well done.

Road Wars (2015)

Road Wars takes place in a post apocalyptic world where water is scarce and the world is full of dangers. The remaining humans are fighting to survive both the elements, and the rabid nightwalkers who come out when the sun goes down.

Does this sound a little bit like Mad Max meets Night of the Living Dead to you? Well, that’s kind of what I thought of, down to the opening scenes with muscle cars and then a biting.

If your making a Zombie Movie, please feel free to give me a ring. I’ll try and keep you from doing silly stuff. What kind of silly stuff?

Spoilers Below

The movie clearly takes place after the end of the world. It is also a very dangerous world. Yet the main female lead, Nakada played by Chloe Farnworth, has long hair. That would be hard to keep clean, and also give the Zombies something to hold onto. Wouldn’t everyone have short haircuts?

Then, within ten minutes Nakada and her partner immediately separate from each other. Even though they are in a new location. She then takes a squat while he wanders around the gas station. He doesn’t seem alarmed even when he find a body? Does he act worried that Nakada is somewhere nearby? Nope, he just walks over to a body on the floor and ends up getting bit.

It just doesn’t make a lot of sense how casual they are acting. It is a dangerous world that is not survivor friendly.

Sorry, I had to rant a bit as this could have been an awesome movie. Sadly the writers/directors let inconsistencies defocus from what a good Zombie Movie should be.

Overall the acting was decent, and most of the special effects were good. The main gap here was the plot. It just didn’t stay true to itself. I won’t ruin the “twist” but in a world were getting bitten means death, some of the decisions didn’t make a lot of sense.

Road Wars lost its focus on the Zombie Survival when the second group of survivors came into the picture. I personally think Road Wars would have been better if they kept the focus on the infected and less on how opposing survivor groups dealt with each other.

I’m giving Road Wars a 50/100. Its a good Rainy Day Movie that just tries a little too hard to cover too much ground. It’s hard to make a decent Mad Max rip off, or a decent Night of the Living Dead rip off – so it makes sense that trying to make a decent blend of the two would be even harder.
