Z Nation Season 3, Episode 4

Escorpion and the Red Hand finds themselves greeted by disemboweled Zombies, their bodies hanging off an overpass in warning.

Shocked

The ropes holding the Zombies up are cut just as Team Warren is staring up at the Zombies. Don’t worry, it gave us an awesome Zombie Kill.

Zombie Slice – O – Matic

With the Zombies taken care of Team Warren is ambushed. The attackers mistake Team Warren for the “Red Hand” gang who came into town and murdered people. The newcomers are going to get get revenge on the “Red Hand” and their leader Escorpion. Only Hector is right there with Warren, so who is pretending to be him?

Back in Spokane Murphy has expanded his compound and his followers, but at a cost. Murphy is weak from giving blood so his doctor can try and find a cure, and he’s impatient. As Murphy is leaving in a huff his doctor gives 10K the cure. 10k immediately drops, foaming at the mouth.

10K With A Minor Reaction To The “Cure”

Lucky for 10K, the doctor was just breaking Murphy’s hold over him, and wants 10K to help her escape.

While 10K is suffering, Team Warren is on the hunt for the “Red Hand”. While Warren and Hector are being threated that Escorpion is going to kill them by a wounded “Red Hand” soldier, Addy is in pain, an infected tooth poisoning her blood. Dr. Sun Mei wants to pull her teeth, but Addy isn’t happy about potentially having a gap in her smile.

After questioning their wounded “Red Hand” soldier Warren realizes that the “Red Hand” is overly motivated to kill the other group of survivors and we find out from the prisoner that the other group of survivors killed members of the “Red Hand” in order to steal food.

While Warren & Hector are fighting in the front of the warehouse, Dr. Sun Mei and Doc are playing emergency dentist, holding Addy down to pull her infected tooth.

Emergency Dental Extraction

I have to be honest, this is one of my worst fears in the Apocalypse. I can take a lot of pain, but I hate having dental issues, and the thought of having to do novice dentistry just sends s chill down my spine.

While Addy is being worked on, the “Red Hand” is sending bomb Zombies at the front door. Warren is able to distract one, but the second puts a huge hole in the building and sends Warren flying to the floor, knocked unconscious as a small horde comes rolling in. Warren and Hector barely survive the fight, but in the process one of the other survivors sees the tattoo on Hector’s arm and realizes who he is.

Back at Murphy’s compound 10K is ready to make his escape but when he goes back for the doctor, he finds that Murphy has found them out. 10K does the only thing he can do, which is jump out a window and run. 10K escapes as Murphy and his doctor vaccinate Murphy’s people.

With the survivors thinking that Hector is the acting leader of the “Red Hand” they attack, and lose. For some reason the “Red Hand” then decides to move on, leaving Team Warren to leave.

Escorpion and the Red Hand ends with Dr. Merch ignoring Murphy’s commands and escaping the only way she has left, by walking into the Zombie moat and putting a scalpel in her neck.

Dr. Merch Bites It (Or Vice Versa)

Escorpion and the Red Hand Score

Escorpion and the Red Hand was an interesting episode but it had some plot holes with the way the “Red Hand” just up and leaves after they have essentially won. Why do that? Which is why Escorpion and the Red Hand scored a 70/100.

iZombie, Season 1, Episode 2

Brother, Can You Spare a Brain? gets right into the action in good murder mystery style. A couple comes home to find Javier, the resident artist, dead, a paintbrush pushed through his eye socket.

Love Is Blind

Flip To The Last Page

As soon as Clive shows up on scene his first question it to ask Liv if she’s got anything yet. I love her response. “Wow, your a flip to the last page of the book type guy, huh?” When Liv asks him what he’s detected so far Clive has an equally flip response. He doesn’t have to detect anything. The wife did it, the wife always did it.

Once the body is back in the ME’s office, Liv makes what appears to be a brains and hot sauce empanada. Yum.

Brains Empanada

The next morning Liv finds Major at her door, returning a box of things she left behind. Peyton returns just as Major is leaving. Peyton calls Liv out again for the fact that it’s clear that Liv still has feelings for the man. Liv is in pain, but she’s trying to save Major’s life. If a scratch turned her, what would f*cking do? I’m pretty sure he’d turn and so is Liv.

That night Liv wakes up from a nightmare. She sees the drug dealer from the boat in her dreams.

Visions

That day at work Liv gets her first vision from eating Javier’s brains, and its hot and steamy. She tells Clive what she was seeing but doesn’t have any real details. Just smuttiness. Clive thanks her for the “Fifty Shades of Psychic.”

Fifty Shades Of Psychic

Clive is still convinced it’s Lola, Javier’s wife, which leads us back to the loft.

Yes, Lola is played by Judy Reyes, aka Nurse Carla Espinosa, aka Turk’s better half. Hopefully Turk doesn’t find out she was banging Javier.

When they arrive at the studio, Tasha, the woman from the vision is there. We find out that Lola and Javier had an open relationship. Both parties knew who the others were sleeping with. Clive doesn’t care, he’s still got Lola pegged as the killer. At least until Ravi calls and tells him whoever did the murder was over six foot tall. Lola is not tall enough.

Drawings

Back at the ME’s office Ravi has enlisted the help of a police sketch artist under false pretenses. We also see the effect that Javier’s brain is having on Liv. She’s emotionally descriptive and she also discovers new artistic talents.

Liv Unleashing Her New Drawing Skills

With Liv’s new drawing out, she doesn’t find her target, but he does find her. Both Liv and Blaine thought they were the only Zombies pretending to be human. They bond over their loss of humanity until Ravi shows up and takes some samples.

As Blaine is apologizing for the boat party, and for turning Liv, he knocks over an instrument tray. This brings about another vision of Javier, being screamed at by Tasha’s jealous boyfriend. When Liv goes to tell Clive, Clive is already on it. The jealous ex boyfriend is already there, ready to be questioned.

Blaine

While Liv and Clive are questioning suspects we see Blaine picking up an older woman at a bar. The next day he shows up at the ME’s office again. He tells Liv that he’s changed, that he’s cut out the toxic people in his life. The next morning Liv witnesses Blaine with some of his old friends, proving to her he’s not what he says he is.

We then get a view of exactly what Blaine is up to. He turned the woman at the bar so he could go back and black mail her for brains to eat.

Turned By The Zombie STD

Back on the crime fighting front Clive has discovered that Javier was boning his manager’s daughter. Also that the manager was also dead broke. The team plans on stopping by the art show to question the manager again. Clive and Liv are there to solve a crime. Ravi is more interested in the models and the free booze.

While at the show Ravi gets pulled into a domestic dispute with a model and her boyfriend. As Ravi is distracted, Liv explores the loft. This s when Tasha’s boyfriend shows up and tries to take advantage of Liv. At least until she reveals she’s a lot stronger than she looks.

Pregnant Daughters

When Liv goes back out onto the main floor Clive is confronting Javier’s manager. Liv piles on, asking him how he felt about Javier getting his daughter pregnant.

The noose is tightening around the manager when Ravi has a revelation because of where Liv is standing. If Javier was on the lower step, the killer wouldn’t have to be over six foot after all.

Clive was right all along, the wife did it. Javier was going to leave her for his pregnant eighteen year old girlfriend. That sounds like a reasonable reason to kill someone to me, but maybe I’m old fashioned.

Brother, Can You Spare a Brain? ends with Liv going to Majors house and telling him that she can’t take not being close to him. She kisses him which leads to Major unleashing the pent up anger and frustration that been building up for six months and kicking Liv out. As Liv walks away she regrets all the times she didn’t spend with Major when she had a chance. I think that’s a valuable lesson we can all learn from. Life is short, enjoy it.

Brother, Can You Spare a Brain? Scoring

Brother, Can You Spare a Brain? scored a 70/100, making it Worth Your Time. If you have someone in your life who doesn’t like classic Zombie Gore but does like a good murder mystery, this is a great, unusual show to enjoy together.

Black Summer, Season 1, Episode 3

Summer School finds Team Rose hiding inside a school, lead inside by a creepy figure wearing a hoodie.

Creepy Dude

The school looks empty, but they don’t take any risks. They grab some supplies and hole up in the band room. Spears clears the space, but is stressed and anxious.

The team tries to rest, but its not long before they are woken by someone or something on the roof. For some reason, they think going to find the cause of the noise is a good idea, but are just lead on a chase after seeing a little kid at the end of the hall.

Creepy Kid

After a brief chase they stop and we get a dose of sanity from Spears.

Spears: “Enough of this sh*t. Let’s get out of here.”

Bearded Guy: “What about the kid?”

Spears: “F*ck the kid. We’re not alone. We should go.

This is the part that drives me crazy in shows and movies. Its an apocalypse, and weird little kids are running around, taunting you. Why would you chase after them? Wait, how could Team Rose make the decision to look for the kid even worse? They could split up!

Nobody but Spears has a weapon? Why would you split up? The moment Rose and her mute friend find the bodies in the shower, they should have backtracked to Spears and bolted.

Shower Slaughter

What could be worse after splitting into two groups? Brian, the mute, runs from Rose, so now there are three groups. Spears and Beard explore the basement until Beard walks through a door and sets off at trap. I’m guessing he’s dead.

Spears and Rose group back up just in time to be introduced to the kids who have taken over the school.

The kids have taken Brian, but don’t realize he’s deaf, so when they take his hood off and he starts to walk, one of the kids shoots him, which turns him into a biter. Apparently this is a world similar to The Walking Dead and if you die, you turn. This leads to an interesting lunchroom table fight while the kids cheer on the violence.

Four survivors entered. Two made it back out.

I’m giving Summer School a 70/100 because I hate it when characters do the worst possible thing when it comes to survival. They should have called the episode “Lord of the Flies” because that is what all the kids with spears reminded me of.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 1

The Walking Dead, World Beyond, Season 1, Episode 1 is titled Brave. It is ten years after the initial Zombie Apocalypse has decimated the planet.

The world is reminiscent of the Hunger Games. There are several factions. Each acts on their own with little to no communication between them. This ties into the two main character’s background. Iris and Hope’s father was taken away from Campus Colony to help the Civic Republic.

It is very clear that Iris and Hope’s father was very important to the Campus Colony. It is also fairly clear that even though he left to help the Civic Republic, he doesn’t quite trust them. He set up a pager and a printer so he can send his daughters messages without the Civic Republic knowing.

TWD: The World Beyond
The Walking Dead: World Beyond

After a long pause in messages, Iris and Hope’s father sends them a warning. Things aren’t going well. Safety is not guaranteed. This triggers the girls, and two of their friends to decide to walk over a thousand miles to get to New York, where the Civic Republic have the girl’s father.

Sneaking Away

The small group sneaks out of Campus Colony, followed by their guardian, who is essentially the town sheriff, and his female deputy. Which is just in time, because the Civic Republic decides its worth killing everyone at Campus Colony to find the girls.

The campus slaughter was actually a little vague. Or maybe I’m just dim. I wasn’t sure where they were killing people, even though Elizabeth, the Civic Republic Leader, asks if her men checked in several of the buildings.

Thus starts the Episode 1, Brave.

Overall I enjoyed it. There is a lot packed into the first episode, including some very heavy handed foreshadowing. The girls are both tortured by the memory of losing their mother, which leads to several flashbacks. In the process we find out that the woman who killed their mother, just happens to be the pregnant mother of one of their travelling companions, who of course remembers his mother and unborn sister fondly. I’m sure he doesn’t know that Hope shot his mom after his mom killed her mom. (I hated typing that many moms in such short order.)

The acting is okay, but some of the dialogue seems forced. Hopefully the cast will gel more with each other as the season goes on.

Brave Scoring

Brave earned a 70/100 and I am hoping it gets better, because I am looking forward to the next episode. What cost it points? The rough edges in the dialogue and some of the acting is a B-. The other item which cost some points is that Campus Community seems a little too clean and well fed for the apocalypse. I know its 10 years later and they have a secure campus, but still, it didn’t feel enough like the apocalypse for me.
