ZOMBIE MOVIES – Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (2005)

The fact that they could put Day of The Dead in the title of this movie is a travesty and an insult to the original Day of the Dead franchise.

Day of the Dead 2: Contagium has a thin plot, but one the writers/directors got really stock on. In the 60s zombie virus broke out at a Pennsylvania Hospital. Forty years later, the hospital is now a psyche unit with a wide variety of young adults in various mental states.

We are almost forty-five minutes in before the residents of the hospital open the thermos full of the old zombie virus and we get some kind of biting action.

What I would think of as a zombie movie doesn’t really get started until around the hour and ten minute mark, and that is just too long to wait. We didn’t need all the psyche hospital drama that lead up to the story at that point. Because of the long delay and strange focus on the mental disease part of this. Overall I’m giving Day of the Dead 2: Contagium a 26/100, earning this a “Just Bad” rating.

If you want to skip a lot of the needless story and just see some zombie gore, skip to the 1 hour, 10 minute mark.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – The Evil Dead (1981)

The Evil Dead should be mandatory for everyone who loves zombie movies. If your an old b*stard like myself you will also get a kick out of seeing Bruce Campbell’s baby face. It’s been a decade or two since I last watched this classic, and I was honestly a little worried it wouldn’t hold up to the memories.

Thankfully, it holds up well for a movie that is almost forty years old. If you can’t enjoy a classic movie that isn’t remastered in ultra 4K, this may not be for you, but as a classic, you have to appreciate what this is, and that it was made in an age when special effects weren’t all CGI, and they still used actual film to record.

A group of friends have headed up into the mountains for a weekend getaway. The music and ambiance builds until Ash, played by the lovable Bruce Campbell, finds a book in the basement of the cabin, as well a recording made by the cabin’s original owner.

Sure, if you want to argue about demons versus zombies, we could, but as far as I’m concerned, once your dead, and you start biting people, that qualifies the monsters as zombies.

Overall, I can’t give this a 100/100, even though part of me wants to, as I feel I need to score it based on today’s standards, but even then, it scores an 80/100, which puts it well into the “Worth Your Time” category.

First Range Day of 2020

My nephew’s buddy was in town and they asked me to take them to the range, which matched up perfectly with the fact that the club I belong to literally opened up this week.

I mostly stood behind them and played range safety officer. My nephew’s buddy is an army vet, but they are still in their 20’s and since it was the first time I took the fellow to the range I felt like it was my moral obligation to just make sure everyone was safe. Obviously there were no issues. The other reason I didn’t shoot much is obviously my back. Its been on the mend, so I while I brought a lot of weapons, I just fired off a clip or two of 9mm and .22LR.

If you look very very carefully at this target you can see I just barely nicked that 10 ring with a .22LR.

After we finished up at the handgun range we headed over to the clays and busted two boxes of clays. The boys had a ton of fun and I told them to let me know when they want to go out again.

Edit: I just wanted to add that we all wore masks 100% of the time, and this is an outdoor range, so we didn’t have to stand shoulder to shoulder.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – American Zombieland (2020)

Apparently American Zombieland was originally titled Fat Ass Zombies, I can’t imagine why they changed it.

The movie starts off with a cute teacher supporting her boyfriend who wants to be a zombie film maker. Unfortunately, the exciting news that his movie was picked up, isn’t’ quite true.

The first twenty minutes are actually pretty depressing.

We then get to see our first zombie, who also has nasty gas, which leads to the beginning of the outbreak.

This feels like someone watched Zombieland, drank like a fish, maybe smoked something not legal in every state, and wrote a script that is supposed to be funny, but just never quite gets there.

There are a lot of scenes that might have looked funny on paper, but somehow they just don’t work.

If it is a rainy day, and you have nothing left to watch, put American Zombieland on, but save it for a rainy day when you have nothing left to do, as it scored barely into “Rainy Day Movie” territory with a 36/100.

Sam, played by Samantha Walker, you were one of the few bright spots in this movie, so if your reading this, you are one of the reasons this wasn’t a total bomb.

ZOMBIE MOVIES – Flu (2013)

Flu is a South Korean movie subtitled in English.

It has high production values, but the story starts very slowly. At the 22 minute mark there has only been one shipping container full of bodies, but no real action yet.

Apparently my search engine thinks this is a zombie movie.

Its not. It is a movie about a deadly viral pandemic.

I’m going to give it a 8, because it wasn’t a bad movie, it just wasn’t a zombie movie.

If your search engine tells you it is – don’t believe it.
