Cooties (2014)

Cooties is one of those movies that somehow slipped by me when it came out. I was stunned as I watched it. The cast is full of top notch talent showing off their comedy chops. Cooties has that rare mix of action and humor that is just so hard to find.

Elijah Wood plays Clint, a down on his luck writer who is subbing at his hometown middle school. He’s really an author, but needs to pay the bills as he tries to finish his next book. Once in the school he encounters Lucy, played by Alison Pill. Clint immediately falls for Lucy. Unfortunately for Clint, Lucy is dating Wade, played Rainn Wilson. Wade is the gym teacher, and a smuck.

The first 20 minutes set up the story, but its worth the wait. The kids have been infected with tainted nuggets! This turns them into crazed (more than normal) little monsters who crave human flesh. I love how the movie opens with Wade shooting hoops. He is completely unaware of what is going down behind him.

When Wade finally turns around, he’s surrounded by hungry kids as the rest of the teachers watch from the lounge.

The teachers have a brief moment of hope when a police cruiser pulls up. It doesn’t last long. Wade then puts the surviving teachers in danger. He opens the lounge door, letting the infected in. The teachers are forced to run for it, fleeing up to the second floor, hungry children hot on their heels.

Wade and Clint then go out, each of them having a slightly different strategy for survival. Wade is an Orc, ready for battle, and he accuses Clint of being a little Hobbit – yes he did.

Sneak Around Like A Little Hobit

While the teachers are struggling, the crossing guard (played by Jorge Garcia) is high as a kite. He’s not sure if he’s hallucinating or really seeing the kids tear into the adults. How else can you come to terms with kids turning the playground into a bloodbath?

The creepy science/sex Ed teacher then does an autopsy and comes to the conclusion that only pre pubescent kids are turned into monsters when infected – it’s just the flu for adults and older kids.

From the moment the teachers realize what’s going on, Cooties is non stop action with a ton of one liners thrown in to make you laugh. I had to watch it twice just to make sure I picked up on most of them.

Cooties is everything a good Zombie Comedy should be. There are laughs, but the Zombies are still the focus, and the writers did an awesome job of keeping Cooties fresh and original.

Cooties Scoring

Cooties scored an 89/100 and is Worth Your Time. Elijah Wood may have played the main character, but Rainn Wilson stole the show. Now I get to look forward to Cooties 2 hopefully coming out.

Better Angels opens with Rick eulogizing Dale. He remembers their fallen friend as the team is out in the fields taking their rage out on some Zombies.

Shane’s Shovel Kill

When we come back from the first commercial break Hershel has rethought his decision about the house. It will be safer and more defensible if everyone is together.

Carl finally does something smart (for a change) and gives the .45 he took from Daryl’s motorcycle to Shane.

Back at the house, Maggie invites Glen to put his stuff in her room. He declines, saying it is because of Hershel. Both Maggie and Glen look unhappy about it.

Out in the field Lori approaches Shane, and admits that the baby could be his or Rick’s. Sorry, if you screw around so much there could be multiple baby daddies, that’s not good. Sorry, I guess I’m old fashioned like that.

Who’s The Daddy?

Lori then has an emotional moment with Shane, but why not screw with the unstable dudes head a little bit? Shane then goes back to the house and gives Rick a guilt trip over the prisoner drop versus talking to Carl about Dale’s death. It was effective though. Rick goes to comfort Carl.

Shane uses the distraction to go collect the prisoner and lead him off into the woods all so he can stage a fake jail break and claim the kid stole his gun. The plan works, as Daryl get’s exactly what he wants. Team Rick is now out for blood, not willing to let the kid go, especially if he’s armed.

I do love the fact that Daryl’s not buying what Shane is selling. He can smell the BS from a mile away.

Daryl Not Buying Shane’s BS

Shane eventually loops back to the start of the trail and finds the dual tracks of Shane and the prisoner. Something isn’t quite making sense. The two of them then find the prisoner, or rather, the Zombie Prisoner finds them, and Daryl can tell the kid had his neck broken – and has no bites.

Just about when Daryl is realizing Shane might be up to something really bad, Shane and Rick are walking in the dark, and Shane is telling him to walk in front of him. Rick’s years as a cop are telling him something is off as they walk and talk. He knows that Shane is leading him out to ambush him.

Rick Calling Shane Out

Rick asks Shane why, and Shane tells him the truth. Did Rick really think they were just going to make friends after everything that happened? Rick is such an idiot here. Come on, the guy f*cked your wife, and is willing to kill you to keep doing it. Put a bullet in Shane and be done with it.

Rick finally does something right. After luring Shane into a sense of security by putting his gun down he puts a knife into Shane’s belly. Good for you Rick.

Then things get a little silly, as Carl somehow finds Rick over Shane’s body, just in time for Shane to reanimate and save Rick.

Unfortunately for everyone, the shot rings out through the woods, and we see lots of Zombies turning towards the noise, setting us up for the season finale.

Better Angels Scoring

Better Angels scored a 75/100, making it Worth Your Time. The last few minutes are intense and awesome, but the lead up is a little slow, which cost the episode some points.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse opens with Blake Anderson (Workaholics fame) singing into his mop. And quite well I must say. He’s a janitor at a research facility, and its not long before things go badly for our beloved janitor. As a researcher struggles with a snack machine, our Department of Defense patient gets wakes up. The janitor’s antics were just too much to sleep through.

Spoilers Below

Patient 0 – DOD

With the stage set, we cut over to a scout recruiting session that transitions into the weekend camping trip planning. Sadly for Augie, his two friends, Ben and Carter are ready to quit the scouts. They just don’t know how to tell Augie yet. Their plan gets interrupted when they drive into a deer. This introduces the “popular” kids to the mix.

Things keep getting weirder. Because the deer gets up after being hit by a car. I guess the Zombie Virus isn’t isolated to humans?

It’s not long before the scout leader encounters the deer in the woods. This leads to a knife fight as the scout leader puts it down with his lucky knife. I believe this is the first time I’ve seen a Zombie Deer kill, and that is just special. Who doesn’t remember losing their Zombie Deer Death Virginity right?

Pocket Knife Vs. Zombie Deer

Unfortunately for Scout Leader Rogers, the doctor from the research facility is nearby. Scout Leader Rogers doesn’t get any time to celebrate his victory over the deer. He fares less well against a Zombie Human than a Zombie Deer.

The Kind Stripper

Back in town, Ben and Carter attempt to buy some beer. This introduces us to the town’s cool stripper who helps the kids out -because that’s what strippers do.

After setting up camp with Augie, Ben and Carter sneak off. They think they are heading to the secret high school party. After getting caught sneaking off by Augie, Ben and Carter end up in town – back at the strip club.

The first few minutes of Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse was epic. Then there is a bit of a lull as the storyline is set up. Things really kick off around the 30 minute mark with the introduction of the Zombie Stripper.

This leads an awesome Zombie Kill that was fairly unique. How often do you see the broken bottle turn into a blood spout?

While Carter is kicking some Zombie butt, the lovely Denise Russo, played by Sarah Dumont saves Ben. She definitely qualifies as a Hotty with a Shotty. Once outside, the small group of survivors realizes what they are up against. Only head shots can kill a Zombie!

Zombies Are Real

The group flees a moment later after they spot a small horde. They don’t get far before they lose their mini spare tire. Lucky for them, Denise is a total bad ass, which gives them time to fix the tire.

Meanwhile Augie has also headed into town only to find himself at Scout Leader Roger’s house. Just in time for Zombie Scout Leader to attack him.

Surrounded

Meanwhile, Ben, Carter, and Denise flee to the police station. Sadly, there are no cops to save them. With a horde behind them, they flee to the only safety there is. This gets them stuck in a jail cell, surrounded by the undead.

Trapped In A Jail Cell

Augie ends up saving the group, which leads to an odd scene where Carter squeezes a trapped Zombie Cop’s boobs. Really?

Free of the police station, the group comes upon a lone Zombie. This leads to a Brittany Spears sing along with a Zombie. At least until a soldier shows up to rescue them. Unfortunately for the group, the soldier has already been bit. After killing him they find out that the military has a plan to bomb the town in a few hours.

The group decides their only solution is to find the hidden party, to try and safe their friends. You know, the friends who didn’t invite them to the party. Movie logic right?

While searching for the party location, our group of survivors ends up in a fight at one of their houses. This leads to a nice decapitation before they escape via a trampoline.

Losing Her Head Over it

This leads to one of the more memorable moments in the movie. Ben is forced to hold onto an old man’s genitalia as he’s hanging out a window. This was one of those gags I could have done without. Memorable doesn’t always mean good.

This leads the group to the crazy cat ladies house, and her cats want revenge!

Cat Attack!

After escaping the cat house, the team hits the local hardware store. They need weapons so they can go save the kids at the high school party. As our group prepares, we get treated to another over the top gag. Let’s just say a young lady gets oral that turns into being eaten alive for real. Wow, this movie really didn’t hold back anything.

Lucky for the popular kids, our group of Scouts show up just in time to save them from the Zombie horde!

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Scoring

Overall, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse scored a 70/100, making it Worth Your Time. But just barely. If you like raunchy, you are going to love this movie. For me, the over the top gags were a bit too much here and there. Although some of them did make me laugh at the same time I was cringing.

Dead Trigger (2017)

A virus has killed billions and turned others into zombies. Unable to stop the spread, the government creates a video game. That is the one liner from the Dead Trigger’s website (paraphrased). Let’s see how this Dolph Lundgren vehicle stands up against its peers.

The director of Dead Trigger is clearly a fan of Starship Troopers. From the opening scenes of of the rally to join the “forces” to the zombie necropsy, this feels like someone just took the Starship Troopers script and tried to make it into a Zombie Movie.

The highlight of the training was the shotgun “accident” which made me laugh. I didn’t like the fact that the Zombies don’t seem to require headshots to kill them. What kind of Zombie Movie doesn’t use that as canon?

I guess these kids were suppose to be good Zombie Killers because they played video games? Why would anyone send this group of very green goofballs on a critical mission? A lot of the story just doesn’t make any sense.

There is an attempt to blend the “bad guy politician” with the story, as well as the tried and true, “we were working on a cure for cancer” as the root cause, but Dead Trigger never really hits on all cylinders at once.

The filmography is high quality, but the special effects are hit or miss. Some of the effects looked top notch, but some of the Zombies had really poorly done makeup on. The acting was C+ to B – at best. They were trying, but sometimes the dialogue they were given was just bad, which made the actors look bad.

My advice is to wait for a rainy day, get drunk, then turn on Dead Trigger as it is just a few points away from being in Just Bad territory at 35/100.

Zombie Undead (2010)

Zombie Undead is what I’d call a “classic”. It follows a tried and true storyline. Sarah, played by Ruth King doesn’t have a clue about what she’s about to face. She’s racing to the hospital with her father who’s injured and bleeding.

Out on the streets a dirty bomb has been set off, and its lit the fuse on the Zombie Apocalypse. Sarah, and a small number of other survivors at the hospital are faced with the usual survival issues. First she has to overcome her disbelief, then survive.

This is a low budget movie without a lot of special effects. Unless I got a bad quality copy, was shot in low definition – either to make it more creepy, or to save money. However, it is a decent representation of what a Zombie Movie should be. It was just done on a budget and it doesn’t deviate much from what you would expect.

The ending was a little flat, but if you save this for a really rainy day while having a few drinks it will all be okay, which is why Zombie Undead scored a 40/100.

Z Nation Season 3, Episode 13

Duel is such an ominous name isn’t it? I can’t wait to see who the duelists are? Warren vs The Man? Warren vs Murphy? The Man vs Murphy? There are so many options!

The episode starts with Addy finding Lucy down by the docks.

Addy tries to get Lucy to flee before The Man returns, but the kid isn’t as old as she looks. Unfortunately for Addy, Lucy still acts like a spoiled brat. Unfortunately, this gives The Man time to return and put Addy through the ringer. Lucy flees, forcing The Man and Addy to both chase after her instead of fight each other.

Addy Getting A Beat Down

Addy tries to reach Lucy, but gets trapped on a burning boat. The Man flees with the kid as Addy struggles to survive. Addy escapes just before the boat goes up in a ball of flames.

Boom Goes The Boat

Addy thinks she’s lost the trail. Lucky for her Lucy is a bright kid. Lucy uses her Zombie control to have a dismembered arm point in her direction, telling Addy which way to go.

Even beat up and hurt, Addy still can’t help but smile as she leaves Doc a note, and some Z weed before heading back after The Man.

Addy Took A Beating

With a little bit of corner cutting Addy is able to get in front of The Man and doesn’t screw around with the Z Whacker this time. Instead opting to just put a few bullets in him.

The Man Goes Down

Addy rescues Lucy, but for some reason doesn’t put a bullet in The Man’s head before driving away.

Safe for the moment, Addy stops to get Lucy some new clothing, and is forced to tell Lucy that her mother is dead. As expected, this doesn’t go over well with the kid. This leads to Lucy telling Addy that the Zombies still have thoughts, and remember things like their names. Addy thinks the kid is making it up, but isn’t quite sure.

The really bad news? All this lollygagging gives The Man the time he needs to catch back up and take Lucy from Addy. This leads to another face off between Addy and The Man, and quite honestly, Addy is outmatched.

Addy Gets Another Beatdown

Addy ends up with what looks like a broken or dislocated arm and The Man gets away again with Lucy.

Once in the car the stress makes Lucy age again. The Man now has to deal with a moody teenager.

Back at the river, Addy is up, but she’s in a lot of pain. She is forced to put her shoulder back in the socket with a brutal smack into a tree.

While Addy is suffering, Doc is having a much better time, hallucinating about Back to the Future due to the high quality Z Weed Addy left for him.

While Addy is suffering, The Man is on a search for chocolate for Lucy, not quite realizing why its such a priority until she freaks out. She thinks she’s dying when she starts to, well, menstruate.

Lucy Is Growing Up

Emboldened by her realization that The Man is afraid of Zombies, Lucy steals The Man’s truck and makes her way out to the forest road to pick up Addy. Lucy thinks she killed the man when she ran him over, but he’s one tough b*stard and is just holding onto the bottom.

Once again The Man has Lucy and Addy is not looking too good.

Addy Takes A Beating But Refuses To Give Up

Duel ends with Addy stealing another truck and picking up Doc who is bicycling after her. He looks like he wants to cry when he sees how hurt she is but instead he gets in the truck so they can chase after Lucy together.

Duel Scoring

In the end, I totally guessed wrong. The Duel was between Addy and The Man, and she put up one hell of a fight. Duel scored a 90/100 and is Worth Your Time. It was non stop on the action front and had a ton of really good fight scenes. Even if Addy was getting her butt kicked in most of them.

They Grow Up So Quickly picks up with Doc and Addy being captured by Lucy’s wardens. Lucky for Doc and Addy the kid is bored and wants some new people to play with.

Doc And Addy Get Captured

While Doc and Addy are captured, Murphy is facing off with 10K. Murphy is upset with the fact that 10K doesn’t seem quite as into being a blend compared to the others. He wants 10K to be his champion, to stop fighting Murphy’s control. Murphy thinks if he can give 10K a new mission, and a new name, 10K just might come to his side. All this is going down as Murphy has a letter opener in 10K’s hand. The scene ends with Murphy forcing 10K to bring the letter open down violently. We just don’t know quite where yet.

What’s The Password

Back at Lucy’s Addy and Doc are tied up and being questioned.

Time For Questions

This leads to Doc and Addy trying to talk their way out of trouble. They just have to convince the Lucy and her babysitters that Murphy sent them to get his little girl. During questioning, we find out that Lucy can control the blends just like Murphy can. When Doc and Addy are challenged for the password that Murphy was supposed to send they can’t do it. Doc is about to have his throat cut when Lucy commands her warden’s to let Doc and Addy live. She wants to play with them. Which leads to Lucy introducing her two new buddies to her other friends.

While Doc and Addy get to play hide and seek with Lucy we find out that so far 10K is still unwounded. At least for a little while. Murphy has renamed 10K to “Thomas” and makes him do the Knife Game. This is where you splay your fingers and touch the knife to the table between them as fast as you dare. Some people call it the Knife Game but my personal favorite name is Five Finger Fillet. Murphy makes 10K play until his hand is cut up a bit before being convinced that 10K/Thomas is ready to be told his new mission.

Back at Lucy’s Doc was forced to kill one of Lucy’s plaything Zombies before it bit him, which leads to Lucy having a fit and running off. She has apparently never seen a dead Zombie before.

Addy Versus Ender

While Lucy is out in the wild, away from the relative safety of her homestead she encounters an Ender and Lucy can’t figure out why the Zombie won’t listen to her commands. She doesn’t seem to understand that even though the Ender looks like a Zombie, its just a human who has reverted to savagery. Lucky for Lucy, Addy is there to kick some Ender butt, earning Lucy’s trust in the process.

Back at Murphytown 10K/Thomas has received his new mission and a test. Murphy offers 10K/Thomas a syringe, telling him it will set him free, but 10K/Thomas doesn’t take it, apparently proving to Murphy that he wants to be a blend still?

Back at Lucy’s house, the kid is excited to hear Doc and Addy tell her about her mother and father, which leads to Lucy asking some fun questions.

Lucy’s Curiosity

In the end Doc ends up telling Lucy about the blueberry pie episode in a round about way, which leads Lucy to the conclusion that she’s blue because of those blueberries.

The Man

Things look like they are going to turn out for Doc and Addy up until The Man shows up with a new mechanical hand, on a mission to get Lucy. When Doc goes to collect Lucy’s wardens The Man uses the distraction to steel the kid. Wounded, but not down for the count, Lucy’s wardens turn on Doc, which leads to a kill with flare.

Doc is able to take out one, but Addy has to save him from the female warden with a gnome statue.

Meanwhile The Man is dealing with Lucy in the car, which starts with a game of a hundred questions. The Man tries to use his taser to shut her up, but she’s not a normal kid.

Shockingly Fun

When Lucy tells The Man she wants Addy, he freaks and tells her that Addy is Dead. This results in Lucy having a screaming fit, which causes Murphy to wake with a scream. When The Man puts a hood on Lucy’s head, Murphy suffers from the same panicked suffocation she does.

By the time The Man takes the hood off of Lucy she’s aged by several years – which goes back to a statement her wardens had said earlier. When she’s stressed she ages faster.

Meanwhile Doc and Addy have split up. Addy is taking the motorcycle to chase down The Man while Doc is going to try and reach Warren or Citizen Z.

They Grow Up So Quickly ends with 10K/Thomas walking out of Murphy’s headquarters, his rifle on his back. We don’t know what his mission is yet, but clearly 10K/Thomas is on it.

I’m going to give They Grow Up So Quickly an 85/100. There wasn’t a ton of Zombie violence but Doc is one of my favorite characters and he played a huge part of this episode, including an awesome Zombie Kill.

Things I Loved About This Episode

  • The interplay between Doc and Addy when they are trying to fake Murphy’s password.
  • Doc telling Lucy the story of her mom meeting Murphy. There were some awesome flashbacks to previous episodes here.
  • Doc’s Zombie Flare Kill was just awesome.

Election Day starts with a nice squish as we see several survivors rolling down the road in an RV and taking out several Zombies in the process.

RV Versus Zombies

Presidential Motorcade

After we see the Zombies lose to the RV, we cut over to Doc and 10K, stranded on the side of the road, at least until the Presidential Motorcade comes rolling along.

Or if it’s not the president, it is at least Sketchy and Skeezy, and they have stolen Clinton’s limo from his presidential museum and are using it, combined with a few new dance partners, to grift what they can from survivors.

Dance party

While Sketchy and Skeezy are running their con, a young woman comes up, begging for help. Her husband and a bunch of other survivors are sick. Sketchy ignores her, but Doc offers to take a look, even if there isn’t much he can do. The sick all have strange yellow streaking through their eyes.

Yellow Fever?

As Sketchy & Skeezy deal with their presidential competition, we see the RV from the opening scenes approaching town from one direction as a small horde comes in from the other.

The Debate

The Zombies arrive just in time to interfere with Skeezy’s presidential debate which leads to a presidential zombie hunt, which of course means Addy had to step in to save the day.

Hammer Time

As Addy kicks some Zombie *ss Doc has found the source of the yellow eye disease. The filter on the town’s reservoir had a Zombie head in it. Lucky for the town’s survivors, Doc watched some Naked & Afraid before the apocalypse and shows the town’s mayor how to fix it using charcoal.

We then find out who the men in the RV are. They’ve been scammed by the fake presidents and want some revenge.

Election Day ends with Doc and Addy using the chaos to escape in the stolen presidential limo. It’s time for them to get back to their main mission of finding Lucy.

Election Day Scoring

Election Day was a fun episode with some good Zombie kills, which is always a plus. It had action and tons of fun. Which is why Election Day scored 80/100, making it Worth Your Time.

Things I Loved About This Episode:

  • The opening RV Zombie Kill.
  • The way Addy checked out the dancing girls.
  • Addy going to town on the Zombie with a mallet.
  • Zombie pom pom girls.
  • The fact that Doc won the election at the end.

Strain 100 (2020)

For fans of Demolition Ranch/Off The Ranch, you are going to recognize Matt and Hickock45. They had teased this zombie movie some time ago, and now it is out. Strain 100 has a simple, straight forward premise. A woman is in a car accident and when she wakes up, people are snacking on people.

My first thought as I watched the first few minutes was surprise. I was honestly not expecting the level of cinematography. A part of me was assuming this was going to be college movie project quality. So it was a pleasant surprise how good the cinematography was. Unfortunately, the professional quality of the cinematography didn’t carry over to the special effects. They might have had a high quality camera but that didn’t leave much money left over for special effects. The blood squirts are B- to straight B quality at best.

Time to Run

After a brief into where a scientist panics and tells her daughter Jesse to get someplace safe and hold up. The next thing we see is how Jesse ends up on the side of the road. Literally, we see her in her car which is on its side, on the road.

Jesse’s girlfriend, who she was trying to save after the girl was bitten at camp, has turned. This leads to a nice bit of gore in the car as Jesse is forced to kill her first Zombie. I guess her friend was still “fresh” enough to have a lot of liquid blood on board.

As she runs, we get the obligatory, kid zombie scene as well. It is just a random scene inserted for fun before Jesse finds her way into a strangers house.

Inside the house Jesse listens to a stranger’s voicemails? This made me think it was her house at first – because why else listen to them? But it turns out its just the first house she found with an unlocked door.

After Jesse listens to the voicemails she wanders deeper into the house. She slips on a massive puddle of blood which leads us to Jesse’s second zombie kill. It was an over the top, covered in blood kill.

Bloody Business

Emma

With the Zombie killed, Emma, who has been hiding in the closet, decides to pop out now that its safe. Emma is apparently a combination waitress and EMT. She challenges Jesse about her bite wound. Emma doesn’t understand how Jesse has been bitten, and not showing signs of turning.

Bitten

This leads to a common trope in Zombie Movies. Let’s not tell anyone else about the bite! I’m sorry, if I see people eating people and your bitten, I might let you live, but your going to have handcuffs on and a hockey mask/motorcycle helmet until I’m 100% sure your not going to turn.

With questionable decisions made Emma leads Jesse to the diner, and the small group of survivors holed up there. The survivors are the classic mix of individuals. We have the bossy gun toting owner of the diner, the old male chauvinist and his wife, the trash talker, and the nice guy.

When the generator at the diner goes out we see Roy, the owner with his back to the dark, talking loudly as he’s trying to get the generator going, which predictable results. The remaining survivors split up, with Jesse driving away with the group who wants to live while the old man and his wife decide to end things. It’s not super clear if the younger girl who stayed behind also did herself? There were three of them, and only two bullets after all.

Atlanta

On the way to Atlanta, Emma finds her sister, and her niece, but her niece didn’t make it, which results in Emma and her Sister giving up. I get what they were going for, showing how brutal live would be, but at the same time, these scenes felt a little forced.

This leads the dwindling group to seek supplies at a quickie mart, where Brandon quickly gets overrun. Again, I think I know what they were going for, but I felt like Brandon was smart enough to tap on the windows before going into the store?

On the way to the brother and sister’s family the car dies, which leads to an act of bravery as the sister’s brother makes a run for it to distract the zombies. Thankfully the older brother is fast and makes it to a truck that luckily has the keys in the ignition. This leads to a ridiculous bit of redneck shooting as a father and his two grown children decide they have to save the truck by shooting at it?

In the Uncle’s barn, we find that he’s maybe not the nice guy the survivors were hoping as he tells Jesse and the little girl that its time to receive “The Blessing”.

Following another played out trope, the Uncle isn’t really the Uncle, and he’s not interested in helping the girls. As he’s prepping what looks like a bomb the little girl’s brother creates a distraction by driving over mines? Why the hell does the vehicle got explosions around it?

The brother rescues the girls, but he’s been shot and dies along with the truck. No, it’s not really explained why the girls end up walking after he bites the big one.

Hickock45

As the girls are walking along the road they are swarmed by Zombies, which is when Hickock45 shows up to the save the day. I feel like the directors at this point knew this was a dud, and tried to leverage a few YouTube stars to try and guarantee that at least their viewers would buy/rent the movie.

The whole Hickock45 and Matt from Demo Ranch felt completely shoehorned into the movie, and while fans of their channels might want to see Strain 100 just for that reason, I have to be honest with you that it’s a little painful to watch. I love Hickock45 and Matt, but their scenes in Strain 100 didn’t really add anything to the story and felt very forced.

As Jesse and her ward go to leave Hickock45s house, we find out that Grace, the kid, was bitten. This leads to the obligatory scene where Jesse has to put the kid down and bury her by the side of the road, complete with a little stick cross.

Strain 100 ends with Jesse reaching Atlanta, where she meets up with a gun toting security guard badass. The security guard apparently brings Jesse inside to watch her moms final recording. Her mom has known her daughter has some super human immunity, and with the package she gave Tory, the security guard, she believes there might be hope for humanity.

The movie just kind of suddenly ends with Tori driving Jesse away on a motorcycle as she blasts away at Zombies, taking Jesse to another lab in Washington which leads to a WTF ending where Skynet is distributing the cure made from Jesse’s blood.

Strain 100 Score

Strain 100 earned a score of 42/100, putting it in the Rainy Day Movie Category. The first thirty minutes of Strain 100 were on track to earn a score in the low 70’s but the scenes at the diner cost the movie a few points and then things quickly went downhill from there. The other issue with the movie is the general atmosphere. The acting was B+ but the dialogue was often a little hokey and peoples reactions didn’t quite fit the gravity of the situation. Everyone seems a little too relaxed after having seen multiple people get attacked, eaten, and bitten. The other issue I had was the whole religion/reason for the Zombie Apocalypse. It’s been done in a ton of other movies, and quite frankly, done better.

In the end Strain 100 doesn’t really break any new ground. It suffers from feeling like someone watched a bunch of other zombie movies and tried to write a movie script using what they thought were the best parts of those movies, but everything doesn’t quite feel like it fits together smoothly, or at all. There are a lot of jagged edges to the story, and the atmosphere never quite feels right for the Apocalypse. If your going to watch Strain 100, save it for a rainy day when your having a few drinks.

Block Z (2020)

Block Z is a Filipino Zombie movie that takes place at a medical school. PJ is dropped off by her father at San Lazaro University after a short, emotional car ride between father and daughter. It appears he’s late on tuition, and doesn’t have the money to follow through.

Oddly, Block Z starts with subtitles, then switches to English, then has intermittent dialogue that is in subtitles. I don’t really mind, it’s just a little back and forth.

PJ And The Squad

PJ and her squad are in medical school and the school is broken down by social groups. The groups appear to be based on the student’s “block”. Some of the translations may be off, but I’m not sure. You’ll see what I mean if you watch it. Small bits of subtitles that seem off.

As PJ is starting her day in a clinic, her father, Mario accidentally hits a pedestrian. This leads him back to the emergency room where PJ is working. As Mario brings in his accident victim PJ is going to treat a patient who has what should be small injury. The patient has been bitten.

The patient is a female who has been bitten on her ankle. As PJ and her pre med friend examine the patient, the patient goes into shock. Angry veins slowly covers the patient’s brow. The woman then codes and is pronounced dead.

At least for a little while. Two other pre med students are in Patient 0’s room when she comes back. One of them is quickly pulled down as the other runs for it. This leaves the door open so that Patient 0 and her first pre med victim can escape. The two Zombies attack the triage unit and all hell breaks loose.

This shortly spreads o the gym. The coach gets his nose bitten off and the basketball team gets destroyed. The cheerleaders are next, which quickly turns into an all out infection. The school has been overrun.

PJ has survived, and so has her father, but they have been separated. PJ’s father is with the young man he hit with his car. The young man wants money. He has also been bitten. Of course the young man turns, and appears to bite PJ’s father, but we aren’t quite sure yet. One of the other student doctors, Lucas, show’s up, saving PJ’s father for the moment.

Lucas ends up finding PJ just in time. She was in the Chancellor’s office after he was bitten in the initial outbreak. Lucky for PJ, Lucas manages to save the day for her as well.

In the chaos, students and patients try to make it outside, but they find their way blocked. The military has blocked the main gates. As Zombies push the survivors out into the open the soldiers panic, opening fire on Zombies and survivors alike.

While the slaughter is going on, the son of a privileged military commander calls his father for help. His father tells him to be ready at 5AM for a helicopter rescue – but only for two people.

Survivors

We now have two groups of survivors. PJ with a few fellow students, and her father who is with the security guard, Bebeth and Patient 0’s young daughter, Ruby. They are hiding out in the kitchen storeroom where they are safe for the moment.

Ruby enjoys some ice cream while Mario and Bebeth share some booze Bebeth’s coworker hid there.

The two are discussing their children when the lights go out and the red emergency lights come on.

Out in the parking lot PJ is with her small group of medical student survivors, trying to make their way across the parking lot. The rich student puts them all at risk by making a run for it just before the generators die. This results in the Zombies spotting PJ and Lucas in the open.

Crossing The Parking Lot Disaster

The group gets split up by the zombies. Lucas and PJ end up crawling under cars in a garage full of the undead. They just barely escape with their lives.

The Church

The group reunites not far away at the church. Thankfully someone had the sense to ask Lucas what his wound is from, making sure he wasn’t bitten.

As the church bells ring the group realizes they are surrounded. They grab what weapons they can find and begin a desperate fight to survive. They fight off the initial few zombies, but a massive horde is coming for them.

The Horde Cometh

Lucas steps forward but before he can strike the first zombie is blown away. Dad and Bebeth have shown up just in time to save the day.

Mario And Bebeth Save The Day

Mario and PJ hug it out but Mario was saved earlier by Lucas, and Lucas told Mario he had to go look for his “girlfriend”. I love the fact that in the midst of people eating people Dad (Mario) is still worried about his daughter’s love life. PJ goes around and says, friends, friends, friends to everyone there.

For the moment Mario is mollified and the survivors are safe.

Dressing Wounds

PJ dresses Lucas’s glass cut wounds while he has a pity party for himself. He thinks he could have saved some of the others. PJ tells him she should be thanking him and they look like they are going to kiss. At least until Mario comes by and coughs in their direction.

As the medical students discuss the virus and what it might be Ruby wanders over to a very dark stairway. She is only kept from going down by Mario’s intervention.

The rich kids girlfriend mentions the rescue as they are standing in the church, and he is forced to admit there will only be room for two people. He says he didn’t think there would be this many survivors by now. What a d*ck! He then proceeds to basically say the guard (Bebeth) and the older guy (Mario) should be left behind with the kid (Ruby). Why? Because they will just slow the medical students down.

Lucas, being a good, moral person says they can’t leave anyone behind, but the rich kid (Gelo) doesn’t agree.

Time to Move

The group then agrees to move on to the Library. This leads the group into a lot of growling, angry zombies. As Bebeth is opening a locked door Ruby sees her mother, who is now a hungry Zombie. The kid goes running into the midst of the biters to get to her mom.

Ruby Gets Eaten

While the survivors scream in horror, Ruby is devoured. Gelo takes the moment of distraction to screw over his friends. He locks the gate that Bebeth just opened, stranding his friends on the Zombie side.

There are apparently a lot of gates at this medical school. Even though Gelo locked them out the rest of the survivors are (barely) able to make it to another gated hallway and lock the biters on the far side.

The Dormitory

It is now 1:44:08 AM, and the action has moved on to the Dormitory.

Bebeth is heartbroken. She had bonded with Ruby and likely blames herself for what happened. This transitions into a brief interlude where Mario plays the guitar before the others do a time check. They need to be at the hospital by 5AM.

PJ goes to use the restroom. When she pulls her hand back she realizes the doorknob is covered in blood.

Of course there is a zombie inside the bathroom. This leads to Mario jumping in to save his daughter, and getting bit in the process. PJ is in denial about what it means, but the others realize what’s about to happen. Mario begs Bebeth to shoot him, but PJ intervenes. Mario shuts the door on the bathroom so his daughter won’t have to see him turn.

The group leaves him to his fate while Bebeth leads the remaining survivors to the pool. They don’t get far before Myles gets attacked in a storeroom and gets bitten. Bebeth gives him a handgun with four bullets before the dwindling survivors move on.

Good Aim

Apparently Myles has genetic good aim. He places his first two shots into zombie heads before wasting his last two. He’s dry firing and screaming as the zombie horde descends on him.

Bebeth holds the stairwell with her shotgun as the other flee. They are forced to jump into the pool when they have no other escape.

Stranded In The Pool

Lucky for the survivors the Zombies are afraid of the water. Even more lucky, Erika can’t live without Myles. She’s willing to get eaten as a distraction so that PJ and Lucas can escape.

PJ and Lucas make it to the medical ward only to find it overflowing with Zombies. They flee to the roof as their only escape.

The Rooftop

Lucas is worried about the door giving way but is able to help PJ climb to the next level before the roof gives way. The wound on his arm from earlier in the night is holding PJ back. Lucas does the only thing you can do when your on a roof and about to get eaten. He jumps over the edge, leading a small horde with him as he goes.

The team is now down to one survivor. PJ is left, but as she’s lying on the helipad she realizes she’s been bit when she checks her watch.

PJ’s Bite

Instead of waiting for the helicopter, PJ goes back down into the building, grabbing an axe in the process.

Getting The Axe

PJ Goes On The Attack

PJ does fairly well at first, but as she continues into the building she ends up getting bitten multiple times. Pesky Zombies!

PJ has realized that she’s not turning, and figures that her father might not have turned either. She’s been heading back to her father since grabbing the axe.

Once she reunites with Mario she explains that they are somehow immune. Then she breaks the news that no rescue is coming. They need to get back to the church in the hopes that the old WW2 tunnels will lead them to safety. Lucky for them, the WW2 tunnels have electric lights.

Unfortunately for Mario and PJ, even though the tunnels are conveniently lit, they also contain a just about to turn Gelo. Gelo’s pissed that someone else might get to live when he’s clearly not going to. Mario fights off Gelo long enough to let PJ escape before they both flee to the surface.

Things on the street don’t look great, but at least PJ finds a weapon fairly quickly and strikes a brave, combative pose.

A Girl And Her Gun

As PJ clutches her weapon the audio switches to a voiceover. There is a typhoon coming and everyone should flee.

We then cut over to PJ finding Lucas and telling the band behind her that they are taking him with them before the credits roll.

Block Z Scoring

Block Z scores a 44/100, put it in Rainy Day territory, so safe it for one of those days where you are locked inside and there isn’t a lot else to do. Why did Block Z score a 44?

Part of the reason is the mix of English and Filipino which means you will be reading subtitles, listening to English, then switching back and forth as the dialogue changes. I found it a bit disruptive, which is sad, because the action scenes were actually pretty good.

The main reason though is the ending. It ends abruptly and honestly feels like a set up for a future film, but doesn’t really have a satisfying ending. PJ and Mario climb up onto the street and then it’s left to our imagination as to what happens.
